Average age in the lineup
2008 age:
McCann- 24
Koshansky- 26
Loretta- 37
Betancourt- 26
Zimmerman- 24
Milledge- 23
Young- 25
Bradley- 30
26.875 is my average age for the 2008 year for my lineup. It's possible Hoffpaiur or Prado will start over Loretta as well which would reduce the age further. Noonan and Cardenas are in the farm system to be the heir apparent at 2nd base anyway. So that's 6 guys improving, 1 guy in his prime and 1 wily vet. I'll take it.

Why not:
Ichiro - 35
HanRam - 25
Dunn - 28
Thome - 38
Wright - 26
Posada - 37
Wells - 30
Iwamura - 29
Avg age is 31 on the dot. Some Vets that are obviously getting older, but can play some ball. Ichiro, Thome, Posada are the oldest cogs, and I don't really see Ichiro falling off that much.

I'm game:
1. Carl Crawford, 26
2. Troy Tulowitzki, 23
3. Aramis Ramirez, 29
4. David Ortiz, 32
5. Hunter Pence, 24
6. Hideki Matsui, 33
7. Geovany Soto, 25
8. Ian Kinsler, 25
9. Pitcher
Average Age: 27.1
The only 2 guys over 30 look like they should continue to produce. Ortiz's OPS has increased each of the last 6 seasons, including 2007 when he posted a career high of 1.066. Matsui's coming off a career high in HR and BB, and he's remained fairly consistent, so I don't see him dropping off before one of my young OF (Maxwell, Hairston, etc.) becomes an adequate replacement. Crawford, Kinsler, Tulowitzki, Pence and Soto give me an excellent young core at key defensive positions all between ages 23 and 26.

Guess I could stand to get a little younger, but it's been worse, in 2006 my Opening Day (or maybe it happened midseason, don't entirely remember the transaction log, and maybe all these guys weren't on the team at the same time, but still whoa) lineup looked something like
RF - Luis Gonzalez - 39
CF - Ken Griffey - 37
DH - Frank Thomas - 38
C - Mike Piazza - 37
1B - Nomar Garciaparra - 33 (and we all know that's an old 33)
SS - Bobby Crosby - 25
That team also had Brad Radke (34 and in his final year) and Tom Glavine (39) in the rotation
with second third and left mostly being platoon filler 30 year old AAAA types. Now that was a lineup with no future.

Sheff and Alou really bring the average age up, but we have replacements in the wings when there time is up, but right now they still rake and are more than welcome in the IBC Yanks lineup.
