Cloverfield

Post by DBacks »

No spoilers assholes.

Anyway, I'm pretty excited about this movie. Its made by Bad Robot, the company behind the best show on television - Lost. Its scripted by Drew Goddard, who wrote some of the best episodes of Buffy and Angel, if you were into those shows. And, the early reviews have been spectacular. Its been awhile since I've seen a really good monster movie, so I'm hoping for the best. I'll be seeing it at midnight tonight, so I'll let you guys know how it was?

Anybody else planning on seeing it?

I've only seen the TV trailers and my first impression was: Godzilla meets Blair Witch Project.

Though I'm not going to see it tonight, I plan on seeing it. I'm a fan of all the shows Gabe listed and from everything I hear this sounds like a cool movie.

I'm skeptical at this point on whether or not we'll actually get to see what's wreaking so much havoc on NYC but I'm still intrigued enough to drop the $10 and find out. I've also heard that not 1 member of the cast was given a full script so not even they know what's really supposed to be going on....probably one reason why nothing has been leaked out about the source of the destruction...badass!

I heard the Monster is a genetically altered, adolescent testudine...
Every review I've read basically breaks down to Blair Witch meets Godzilla. But hell, in a country where shows called "Are you smarter than a 5th Grader?" can be a hit, nothing surprises me in the media anymore.

First, Blair Witch meets Godzilla is a way of explaining a movie you don't feel like explaining. It's generic, poorly thought out, and in the end, untrue. It's an old fashioned monster movie with new twists. In the end, it's a damn good movie. If you really don't wanna see it - fine. Don't. But to sit here and talk shit about something you've never seen is stupid.

And you know what's even worse? You have the nerve to accuse people who do enjoy something that you know nothing about of being idiots or somehow victims of a pop culture you think is beneath you. "It doesn't interest me therefore anyone who likes it must be stupid. Americans are dumb for enjoying things that I do not enjoy."

If you don't wanna see it, I can respect that. But to imply that the people who did like it only did because they're products of a culture you think is stupid is on a level thats beyond my comprehension.

Godzilla is a great old fashioned monster movie. The twist is a Blair Witch shooting perspective. From reading the plot rundowns and reviews, I don't see how you can call it much more than that.
I actually thought your Generic and poorly thought out comment was about Cloverfield at first.

I'm not ripping this particular film with the Idiocracy reference, rather the state of contemporary 'entertainment'. "Smarter than a fifth grader?", "Cash Cab", So-called "Reality" Television... yep, this is western popular culture.

I'm genuinely disappointed no one got the first joke in there. Maybe Andrew will.

Are you smarter than a 5th grader is actually a very good idea, because it directly challenges the educaition system as currently structured. Cash cab is on the Discovery Channel in the afternoons, it's not exactly a hit. In fact, those are two really random choices, if you wanted to point towards the decline of American pop culture how about the fact that multiple networks are doing the same show (e.g. Singing Bee/Don't Forget the Lyrics). And if you really wanted to make an idiocracy joke I think the way to go would be that the Monster was so scary because he had electrolytes.

Cash cab just stuck out because it's a game show inside a cab... just ridiculous. There's no shortage of examples though really.
The electrolytes would have been good, but it would have seemed less obscure. I was shooting for maximum obscurity there.

Admit it, you love the Cash Cab. I looked for it the last time I was in new york but no such luck. I think that there has always been an equal percentage of crap to good stuff in the media, but the crap doesn't survive so we can't compare it to todays crap
