I'd like to contest that ruling, as I wasn't given an opportunity to defend it. My evidence, specifically the part from the 9/1 post (it's at the bottom of the page at the link below) that says, "With the giants out of the playoff running and September callups coming to fill the bullpen, there is little reason to keep running Melancon out there."

If they were contending for a playoff spot, there's no way he would have had the surgery. He had been pitching through most of the season, and before the surgery doing it effectively.
As well, even in the link that was posted in Pat's post, "He still wanted to help us out." implying he could have continued pitching, if it was worthwhile.

ExCo has reviewed, and Melancon is out.
It's not as if Melancon has a sore quad or shoulder and the prescription is rest. He has an injury that requires surgery. Unfortunately, the had the surgery during the season. It's tough to play "what if," but when a player has to go under the knife to cure his injury, it's impossible to let him play in the IBC.
