Goldstein's Top 11 Pale Hose Prospects

Post by Padres »

Baseball Prospectus put out their top 11 White Sox prospects today:

Five-Star Prospects: Fautino de los Santos, RHP
Four-Star Prospects: Gio Gonzalez, LHP, Aaron Poreda, RHP
Three-Star Prospects: Chris Carter, 1B, John Shelby, CF, Jose Martinez, OF
Two-Star Prospects: Jack Egbert, RHP, Ryan Sweeney, OF, Lance Broadway, RHP
One-Star Prospects: Brian Omogrosso, RHP, Kyle McCulloch, RHP

The White Sox farm system is in a world of hurt but when one compares Goldstein's list this year to last year there is some signs of progress.

Excellent Prospects: None
Very Good Prospects: John Danks, LHP, Ryan Sweeney, OF, Josh Fields, 3B
Good Prospects: Gio Gonzalez, LHP, Charlie Haeger, RHP
Average Prospects: Aaron Cunningham, OF, Lance Broadway, RHP, Kyle McCulloch, RHP, Chris Carter, 1B, Nick Massett, RHP

As you can see last year the White Sox had NO Excellent prospects and this they have one in de los Santos ... Gonzalez moved up in Goldstein's estimation from Good to Very Good where he is joned by this year #1 draft selection Poreda ... Likewise Carter appears to have moved up from Average to Good where he is joined by two youngsters Shelby and Martinez.

Omogrosso, a 2006 draftee, is an interesting pick on Goldstein's part as he is a side-winder like Pat Neshek, a TJ survivor and a guy moved from Closer to Starter in the minors ... yet most people who follow the White Sox believe if he reaches the majors it will be a Set-up pitcher. I would have probably selected James Gallagher, OF over Omogrosso but overall I don't disagree with his list. He did list Gallagher as his sleeper and he listed John Ely, RHP; Christian Marrero, 1B; Jerry Owens, OF as just missing.

As perusual he also included non-prospects in his 25 and under list which read:

The Big Picture: Rankings Combined With Non-Rookies 25 Years Old Or Younger (As Of Opening Day 2008):

1. Fautino de los Santos, RHP
2. Gio Gonzalez, LHP
3. John Danks, LHP
3. Aaron Poreda, RHP
4. Chris Carter, 1B
5. John Shelby
6. Jose Martinez, oF
7. Danny Richar, 2B
8. Jack Egbert, RHP
9. Ryan Sweeney, OF
10. Boone Logan, LHP
