Offseason thus far...

Post by Royals »

So far the off-season, which started about a month too early for Boston's taste, has been a busy one. The Red Sox have moved a pair of stars in Michael Young and Victor Martinez, and brought in others in Miguel Tejada and the promising Jeremy Guthrie. Guthrie provides valuable depth to the Sox rotation and will slot into the #5 spot once 2005 Cy Young award winner Chris Carpenter returns. The move should bump veteran Curt Schilling from the rotation, though he could be dealt before then.
Several deals that looked close to happening fell apart late last week, but there are still prospects for a lot of deals out there and when the right one comes along... it'll get done.
The dealing of Carlos Silva for David Eckstein was a surprising move since Boston already had Miguel Tejada at SS, but this move protects the Beantown Boys from a possible move to 3b by Tejada and opens up a little more flexibility in the trade market.
Underachiever JD Drew was dealt for underachieving Vernon Wells... a return to health should bring back Wells' bat to the glory it formerly held. There's no telling what will reinvigorate Drew's, aside from another contract year.
Kevin Millwood remains on the block as does Curt Schilling... for now. Travis Hafner is also rumored to have been floated in trades as has the heavy hitting Carlos Lee.
What Boston will do next is unclear, but one thing is for sure, this team is not willing to risk a repeat of the performance in 2007.
