Player signed - or apparently signed - to play overseas 2016

Post by Padres »

Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reports that Hector Noesi is expected to sign a contract with the KIA Tigers in the Korean Baseball Organization.

The 28-year-old right-hander appeared in 10 games for the White Sox in 2015 (five starts), registering a 6.89 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and 22/17 K/BB ratio over 32 2/3 innings. It could be a good opportunity for him to get his once-promising career back on track.

Update: Hector Noesi signed a one-year, $1.7 million contract with the KIA Tigers of the Korean Baseball Organization.

Noesi is the second-highest-paid foreign player in the league, behind only Esmil Rogers. The 28-year-old owned a 6.89 ERA and 1.78 WHIP in 10 appearances with the White Sox last season before being outrighted off their 40-man roster in June.

Sports Hochi in Japan reports that Tsuyoshi Wada will sign with the Softbank Hawks.

Wada played for nine seasons with Softbank before coming to the majors in 2012. The left-hander had some success with the Cubs after injuries sabotaged his tenure with the Orioles, but the 34-year-old decided to return to his native country.

Yankees released RHP Chris Martin.

Martin is set to sign a contract with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in Japan. The 29-year-old posted a 5.66 ERA and 18/6 K/BB ratio over 20 2/3 innings with the Yankees this season.

Michael Bowden has agreed to a contract with the Doosan Bears of the Korean Baseball Organization.

The 29-year-old right-hander had a terrific season in 2015, compiling a 2.63 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 99/31 K/BB ratio over 123 innings at Triple-A between the Orioles and Twins. Still though, he was unable to generate a call to the big leagues, so he'll head overseas to continue his professional career.

[2B] Hector Gomez has signed a contract with the SK Wyverns in the Korean Baseball Organization.

The terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed. It will be a good opportunity for the infielder to play everyday and rebuild his stock, rather than settling for a minor league contract this winter.

A day after the Indians granted his release, C.C. Lee signed a deal with the Seibu Lions in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball League.

It may have been a challenge for the 29-year-old hurler to find a favorable landing spot stateside, so he'll head back overseas to continue his career. The 29-year-old appeared in 47 games with the Indians over the past three years, pitching to a 4.50 ERA and 1.59 WHIP.

According to Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca, the Blue Jays have agreed to send [1B] Matt Hague to the Hanshin Tigers of Japan's Central League for $300,000.

The deal is not yet official, but Hague has been removed from Toronto's 40-man roster. Hague earned a September call-up with the Blue Jays this season after winning the International League MVP Award by batting .338/.416/.468 with 11 home runs and 92 RBI over 136 games with Triple-A Buffalo. He turned 30 in August.

Sanspo.com reports that Jordan Norberto is nearing a contract with the Chunichi Dragons of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball.

Norberto, who will turn 29 next month, held a 4.96 ERA over 45 1/3 innings at Triple-A Durham with the Rays in 2015. He's battled shoulder woes the last few years and hasn't pitched in the majors since 2012.

Sanspo.com reports that Dayan Viciedo is nearing a contract with the Chunichi Dragons of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball.

Viciedo spent all of 2015 at the Triple-A level with a couple different teams, batting .287/.348/.450 with eight home runs across 276 plate appearances. He'll turn just 27 in March but has apparently decided signing with a club overseas is his best option.

Esmil Rogers signed a one-year, $1.9 million contract with the Hanwha Eagles of the Korean Baseball Organization.

Rogers had a 6.27 ERA in 33 innings with the Yankees this past season before being released in late July. He finished the year with the Eagles and they obviously liked what they saw. He'll be eligible to sign with an MLB team again next winter.

Zeke Spruill signed a one-year, $700,000 contract with the KIA Tigers of the Korean Baseball Organization.

Spruill pitched in the Red Sox organization this past season, going 5-10 with a 3.94 ERA in 114 1/3 innings at Triple-A Pawtucket. He last pitched in the majors with the Diamondbacks in 2014.

Robert Coello signed a one-year, $550,000 contract with the Nexen Heroes of the Korean Baseball Organization.

Coello hasn't pitched in the majors since 2013. The 31-year-old had a 4.18 ERA between the Giants' and Rangers' Triple-A teams this past season.

Brian Bogusevic has signed a contract with the Orix Buffaloes of Nippon Professional Baseball.

Bogusevic elected to become a free agent after being outrighted off the Phillies' 40-man roster in June, and the 31-year-old outfielder may now be done forever with Major League Baseball. He holds a .238/.311/.373 career MLB batting line in 834 plate appearances.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Garrett Jones has signed with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan's Pacific League.

The deal is worth $2.8 million plus bonuses. Jones, 34, was released by the Yankees back in August after batting just .215/.257/.361 with five homers and 17 RBI over 152 plate appearances this past season.

Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith reports that Eric Stults plans to pitch in Japan in 2016 or retire.

Stults held a 5.85 ERA over 47 2/3 innings last season for the Braves and spent the bulk of the season in the minors with the Dodgers. He just turned 36 earlier this month.

The Tigers have sold Jacob Brigham's contract to the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball.

Brigham inked a minor league deal with the Tigers last week but has evidently found a better opportunity overseas. He allowed 28 hits and 16 earned runs in 16 2/3 innings out of the Braves' bullpen last season.

Sung Min Kim of River Ave. Blues reports that Allen Webster is expected to sign with a team in the Korean Baseball Organization.

That explains the Pirates' release of him this week. Webster holds a 6.13 ERA, 1.60 WHIP and 76/66 K/BB ratio over 120 1/3 innings at the big league level, but he'll turn just 26 in Febuary and it's surprising that he's decided to head overseas at this point. The right-hander was ranked as a top-50 prospect a couple years ago by Baseball America.

Cardinals sold the rights of RHP Zach Petrick to the DeNA Yokohama Bay Stars of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball.

The 26-yar-old has spent the past four seasons toiling in the minor leagues in the Cardinals organization. In 2015, he posted a 4.52 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 113/29 K/BB ratio over 157 1/3 innings at Triple-A Memphis. He wasn't going to get a chance with the Cardinals given their incredibly deep and talented rotation, so he'll explore when will likely be a much more lucrative opportunity overseas,

Luis Perez has agreed to a contract with the Yakult Swallows of Nippon Professional Baseball.

The 30-year-old southpaw hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2013, so he'll look to resurrect his career overseas. He posted a 4.23 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 34/31 K/BB ratio over 66 innings between Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Buffalo in 2015.

According to NPB Tracker's Patrick Newman, Kyle Davies has signed a deal with the Yakult Swallows in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball.

The 32-year-old appeared in just one game for the Yankees in 2015, hurling 2 1/3 scoreless innings. Prior to that, his last exposure to the big leagues was with the Royals in 2011. If he has a nice season overseas, it could lead to the possibility of a career resurgence stateside for the right-hander.

The KT Wiz of the Korean Baseball Organization announced Friday that they have signed Yohan Pino to a one-year contract.

The deal is believed to be worth $700,000. The 31-year-old right-hander appeared in seven games for the World Champion Royals in 2015, posting a 3.26 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 13/3 K/BB ratio across 19 1/3 innings.

Collin Balester announced Saturday that he has signed a contract with the Samsung Lions of the Korean Baseball Organization.

The 29-year-old right-hander wasn't finding any offers to his liking stateside, so he'll head overseas for the 2016 season in an effort to rebuild his value. He appeared in 15 games for the Reds in 2015, compiling a 7.47 ERA, 1.92 WHIP and 13/13 K/BB ratio over 15 2/3 innings.

Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Marcos Mateo underwent a physical for the Hansin Tigers in Japan on Tuesday.

Assuming everything checks out OK, the reliever is headed overseas. Mateo, 31, pitched well over 26 appearances with the Padres in 2015, holding a 4.00 ERA and 33/9 K/BB ratio over 27 innings.

Corey Brock of MLB.com reports that Jay Jackson was granted his release on Friday so that he can head overseas to play in Japan in 2016.

Jackson is expected to sign with the Hiroshima Carp. The right-hander will have an opportunity to make more money than he would have in the minor leagues stateside. With a strong performance, he may also attract attention from big league clubs for next year.

... The 28-year-old hurler made his big league debut during the 2015 campaign, registering a 6.23 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and 4/1 K/BB ratio over 4 1/3 innings. He'll attempt to latch on elsewhere on a minor league deal.

Mariners released RHP Anthony Bass.

Bass has an opportunity to pitch in Japan and the Mariners will let him pursue that more-financially-lucrative dream. Seattle acquired the 28-year-old right-hander from the Rangers in mid-November as part of the Leonys Martin trade. Bass owns an underwhelming 4.40 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and 6.0 K/9 in 278 1/3 career major league frames.

... Bass is signing with Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters of the Japanese Pacific League.

Bass was released earlier Thursday to pursue a deal with the Japanese club. The 28-year-old owns a 4.40 ERA and 1.39 WHIP over 278 1/3 career MLB innings.
