2016 Relocation

Nils has expressed interest in (already) moving back to the National League. He and Dan were talking about swapping Miami and Oakland because Dan wants out of Miami, and lived in the Bay Area for awhile. They both asked what I thought, and I said I'd relay it to ExCo.

My own feelings -- I really don't care if people move, but the NL East would be really thin.

Doesn't bother me any

I'm fine with this, but really, Nils should settle down at some point.

I'm going to stay out of it since it directly negatively impacts me, but yeah I thought we had guidelines/rules on moving and that our goal was for some realism after we had entire rosters jumping all over the league early on.

Took me a while to find it (from back in 2007): viewtopic.php?t=559
From this point forward, ExCo will be very reluctant to allow moves outside of your division except in the case of a favorite team opening up. If that occurs, then we will do the best to accomodate you. As for moves within your own division, if there is a legit reason for it then there really is no reason not to allow it, but we will still take the time to look at it. This does not apply to newbies who did not get any say in which team they would be. We will review those on a case by case basis.
I'm not sure how I feel about it since Nils wants to make the move for what I would consider a competitive reason (DH vs no DH) rather than based on team availability. I'm also not sure we've been consistent in following our guidance in the last 8 years but I feel like we've reminded people of it several times.

Given that, well, I''d say they're stuck where they're at

Nils would like to know if we'd allow him to move or not, so he can make some decisions about what direction to take his team this offseason.

I'd say make him stay given the previous rules

Just looking at his pennants, he's gone through at least three teams (Cubs, Giants, A's). It's pretty much a given, given his relationship with Bren, that the Red Sox are his favored squad--which rules out relocation based on favoritism. On a competitive basis, he would be moving to a harder division...but on the other side of the coin, this could also be Dan trying to move to an easier division. That is counterbalanced by Dan being a Bay Area guy now, so there's some sense there.

It's definitely an edge case and it has a bit of a stink to it. I'm leaning toward no, just because it's a lousy precedent to let a guy move four times. If Dan wants out of Miami and away from that sculpture, I'm sure there's someone with a taste for kitsch who'd love to take his spot.

I'm against allowing this move

For the record I am also against this move.

I've informed them both that the move won't happen.

Since Dan can't have Oakland, he said he'd be interested in Toronto, since Pat B is moving to Chicago after the year. Where does everybody stand on that?

Son of a bitch I'm never making the playoffs. So what is Dan's connection with Toronto? Or is he just fleeing a strong division again?

As far as I can tell, he's been in Miami for at least 8 or 9 years (possibly more, but the pennants on his page only date to 2008). As far as I can recall, he's been unhappy about being there. I'm more okay with this move than the Oakland thing.

The NL East is strong? Seems to me the AL East is far better with JB, Tullar, Sander and Martin.

Yeah, this is where I sort of stand too. I'm not really wild about teams bouncing all over, but Miami does sort of suck, and he has been bitching about leaving for awhile.

I would say let the new GM take over Miami ... let Dan do the move to the AL East as long as he understands that is where he will for a while. No more moves for him.

I'm with Jim. From a ballpark standpoint Miami isn't Coors or anything, so while Dan has seemed interested in getting out of there I think the stipulation should be that he gets that he's picking where he wants to be for the foreseeable future, rather than waiting another year or two for potentially a more attractive location.

Also, I don't think that you can completely ignore that Dan moved the first time to get away from JB and now he's looking to move to the other league after not being able to get past JP for a few years.

I'd completely forgotten he'd had another team. That said, he's spent close to a decade in Miami. Let him spend the next decade in Canada.
