1. Legares was a 4 WAR player last year in 116 games, 2. Two guys that have been around for a while, 3. No sign of collusion. Not saying I love the trade, but that's why I passed it.

Juan Lagares was a 4 WAR player based almost entirely on outfield dWAR, which is consistently inconsistent (1) and not accurately accounted for in the sim (2). It's a fundamental misunderstanding of WAR to simply quote the number and move on.

Like I said I don't like the deal, but the moving parts weren't significant enough for me to reject. Lots of risk in every player/pick in this deal. Shall we move it to a vote?

While I am on the TRC this is a deal I did not vote on as it went through prior to me having the opportunity to do so. It would be really easy to say that I wouldn't have approved it, but honestly I don't know how I would've voted. The difficulty for TRC members on deals of this sort is that when IBC GM's are longstanding it is difficult to reject a deal because they get the benefit of the doubt. In this case if there are any reservations about the deal I'd recommend sending it to a league wide vote. The result would give us on the TRC some guidance as to how closely we should be looking at deals involving IBC veterans.

Hey Fellas,

Happy holidays! If the league decides on a vote for this I will say more, but wanted to quickly respond to a few of the comments made by GMs I respect quite a bit.

I do think defense matters a great deal in the sim and Legares is obviously an outstanding defender, but I am actually more intrigued by his offensive growth rather than just his defensive prowess.

Jake is right to point out that the WAR value is very much influenced by the dWAR ; however, look at the oWAR and oRAR gains between the two seasons.

2013 392 AB .242/.281/.352 OPS + 80
2014 416 AB .281/.321/.382 OPS + 102
-----------------------------------------------------
2013 WAR 3.5/ oWAR 0.2/ dWAR 3.5/ oRAR 4
2014 WAR 5.5/ oWAR 2.4/ dWAR 3.4/ oRAR 24
-----------------------------------------------------

Brett is getting a terrific pick (1.3) in a deep draft. I'm getting a young, top 10 CF who at 24 has a few more years before he reaches his prime.

If you also look at the jump from Lagares' MiLB numbers from 2009 to 2010, you'll see his jump from 2013 to 2014 is pretty consistent with the overall offensive growth of a young player. Martin's team is pretty loaded with power, having a terrific young defensive CF with upside still on the bat should be a pretty highly coveted player.

This is the main problem with everything for me. I believe Jake L. accidentally clicked approve when he shouldn't have -- and he shouldn't have even voted on the trade at all.

Or given the current offensive context you can approximate that style of production in the sim with a zero bat VG defense projecting CF with some speed as I've done going back to the great Dewayne Wise. Anyone want to trade me a top 5 pick for Dewayne Wise (or JBJ last year or Sam Fuld this year)? If there was an irregularity in the voting process the first question is whether switching from a yes vote by Jake to a no vote by Ken changes the approval process. If not it's a bad deal but it's moot, if it is then let's follow the process.

I hate to say it, but after all the years of you bashing my Votto trade, your Stanton trade was pretty bad and we didn't overturn that. Why would we overturn a trade with draft picks, prospects, and relievers? The pieces in this trade just aren't that significant. Martin has earned the right to trade a draft pick for a player he really likes.

Nah dude, that deal is going to work out fine. What this deal is like is my first trade in the league when I sent out the #6 pick (Troy Tulowitzki) for Jeremy Accardo and the 28th pick (thanks TRC of 2005 :D).
