Hamlin asked me today if he claims a player on Aug. 31 and the claim isn't processed until Sept. 1 because of the 24 hour window (example: Tolleson) if he's eligible for postseason play, since he was claimed prior to Sept. 1, but doesn't land on his roster until Sept. 1.
We've never really had to deal with this before, and the only reason Tolleson was presumably cut at 1 am on Aug. 31 is probably because Pat G thought that would make him ineligible for postseason play, but we need to make a distinction going forward.

I put in a claim on Tolleson 1. to save us the headache of this becoming an issue and 2. because I do need useful relievers for next year instead of filling out my pen with pitching prospects like this year.
IMO, if you claim a guy August 31, he should be able to play. I don't see this any different than making a trade and it not being approved until September 1. Anyone traded for in MLB today won't be on a roster until tomorrow, but he'll still get to play in the playoffs. To me this is no different. Maybe I'm the only one that thinks this way

Since Aaron is claiming and this doesn't directly impact Hamlin/me, I'll go ahead and give my opinion. I think that the transaction needs to be executed for the player to be eligible. In the case of waivers, a claim isn't the primary transaction - lots of people can claim a player. The award of the player to a team is the primary transaction.
The difference between this and trades is that the actual transaction is not done until the claim is awarded. In the case of trades, the deal is done, just dependent on some dudes being around to vote on it. I don't see those as comparable.
That said, if MLB doesn't do it that way I'd probably be in favor of viewing it like they do.

Yeah, I'm with Brett on this. If I put a trade in at the TRC right now, I'm at the mercy of two or three people voting on it when they see it to have it put through on our website. With waivers, I have to wait until the 24 hour period expires, completely different to me.
I think the claim has to be done sometime on Aug. 31 to be eligible.
