September Trading

Post by Cardinals »

I already know Bren says "No" on this because he thinks it doesnt honor the validity of the trade deadline but I disagree.

I propose that we allow trading still in September. NOTHING goes into the database for this year, but is merely reflected on OOPSS. There is only one playoff race in the IBC. You have 21 GM's sitting around basically bored and just watching league debates come and go (and theyre probably more going than coming at this point.) I'm in favor of allowing us to resume trade and trade talks. We have a clear way to seperate roster from database, let's use it. It harms no one and encourages league activity. I've talked to several GM's about this: Zalaski and Nils notably and they are in favor of it. I can't see any opposition to it.

While Bren it might make the trade deadline seem less "valid" i don't think it harms the trade deadline. That is the 2007 trade deadline. Sellers can no longer sell. I Can't move Richie Sexson for + value anymore. That's what the trade deadline is. Aaron can't go out and get another bat for 07. That's what the trade deadline is.

Lets encourage activity. This will also keep people checking back for the playoffs. I know the last two years I haven't even heard about the playoffs other than IM's with various GMs in them.

additionally for rebuilding teams, the minor leagues are pretty much winding down and in the playoffs so there's not a ton to scour for.

This is one I fully support, assuming that it didn't get complicated.

I support as well, I don't see how it can get complicated. Trades are allowed but don't go into diamond mind.

I'm in favor of this if it is implemented for next season and if the same rules are applied to F/A's. i.e. you can sign them in OOPSS during september/october but they won't go into the d-base.

I think you should be allowed to sign FA's in September and October (necessary as an injury precaution), they just can't play in the playoffs which I thought was the rule. I really dislike doing trades after the deadline, to me it smacks of gentleman's agreements and all that other shit that always causes problems. Is it so hard not to trade for 6 weeks?

I have been giving this whole "trading after the deadline but prior to the end of the world series and just enter it into OOPPS but not onto the DMB rosters" idea some thought ...

I guess where I am having a problem with agreeing to it is what happens to the teams in the playoff mix and eventually the playoffs. Are they at a potential trading disadvatage because they can not trade a player who they need during the playoffs? Or are you suggesting that they can trade a player and still play him? Help me better understand this and it will help me better think this through.

That's exactly what they are proposing, it just seems dumb and unnecessary to me, it's not going to kill anyone not to be able to trade for a few weeks.

How is it dumb? Whatever. in 4-5 weeks from now you will see activity hitting a near all time IBC low for the time of year. Lack of competitive teams +no scouting to do in the minors + no trading = who the F cares? I know some very active GMs are already getting restless and bored. I can't imagine they are going to be too thrilled in a few weeks.

Jim basically the database doesn't change for the rest of the year, except for the free agent signings. Trades DON'T go into the database but go on the OOPSS. It's not complex.

Additionally, how is it a gentlemans agreement? That's what I'm trying to abolish.

You are reaching a bit into hyperbole JP. How is this September/October any different from every other September/October when trading hasn't been allowed?
I don't have a objection to the idea, just not for this year. How is it fair to say "Hurry up, trade, here comes the deadline!" Then "The deadline has passed, no more trading!" Then two weeks later say "Ok, you can trade again, we changed our mind." Some GM's might not have rushed into deadline deals if the deadline had been treated differently.
I also don't think implementing rules mid-season that effect that current season are a good idea unless it's to address some new. Urgent problem. The annual September/October slowdown isn't new and it's not urgent. I personally like to use the time (when not embroiled in a playoff hunt) to start doing draft prep.

Because this Sept./Oct. features zero playoff pushes sans the AL East. You have 21 GM's out there who don't give a shit. That's how it's different.

I see what you're saying and I'm fine with your reasoning I guess. The different still is, these deals arent going to help anybody in 2007. Nothing is going into the database, so the sanctity of the deadline is still there. I don't think anybody rushed into any trade deadline deals (how many were there? 1? 2?).
