Early on I had enough free roster spots that I could toss guys against the wall until one stuck. Now I'm down to just one or two slots and every guy I drop I like. I got De Jesus from you I believe and I think JT had Weglarz. Both likely victims of roster crunch. Inoa is a tough guy to rank. At this point his ceiling is higher than any other pitcher on the list, perhaps the only pitcher ever with that ceiling has been Sidd Fynch. I've taken to calling him my own personal great white whale, which is precisely the problem with rating him, on ceiling his #1 on floor he doesn't belong anywhere close to the list. So if Inoa has never pitched an inning, how can anyone considering putting him that high; when guys like Derek Holland, Wade Davis and Trevor Cahill, Alderson and so on have already proven they can pitch in AA and so on. I think it would be different if the list was called 2009's most valuable minor league players. But its called 2009 best prospects, how can you determine a guy is that high if hes never pitched a single inning and is 17 years old.
That sounds like a best vs. most valuable argument, which are usually a waste of time. I'm a huge fan of Holland obviously, but Cahill, Alderson, Anderson (who I think you meant instead of Alderson), and Davis are all considered likely stud #2's with some potential to be #1's. Holland, who I do think has a chance to match Inoa's ceiling, has 4 AA starts, that's not exactly a major sample size. Alderson hasn't reached AA, Anderson only has 6, and Cahill only has 6. Davis has a full season's worth but is several years older. If you rate based on ceiling Inoa is #1, if you rate based on likelihood of reaching that ceiling then obviously he's lower. But the last guy to get the types of scouting reports Inoa has wasn't even a baseball player, it was LeBron, and LeBron would absolutely have rated #20 on a list of the top basketball prospects as a high school junior (in fact he was probably #1 at that age). 20 is an aggressive ranking, but if you rank based more heavily on ceiling than on likelihood then its a reasonable grade. Who has a higher ceiling than Inoa? I think you're going more than a little bit overboard in your appraisal of Inoa's ceiling, you're certainly forgetting the slobberfest among prospect hounds over Felix Hernandez. Given that he's on your IBC team and on the Billy Beane A's, I won't give you TOO much shit over that, but it's pretty hard to take your appraisal of Inoa seriously.
