Prospect Showdown
Prospect Showdown
I figured I'd start this up. I set up a 30 team bracket. With the help of JP I randomly assigned each team a number 1-30 and then put it into the bracket.
A few comments and thoughts.
The Rockies drew the 1 seed and a 1st round bye and will play the winner of the 16-17 game.
The Giants drew the 2 seed and a 1st round bye and will play the winner of the 15-18 game.
Not everyone did a top 10 list, I didn't really look too hard through those teams but just listed a few of their prospects I noticed. So hopefully by the sweet 16 everyone will have their own top 10 in.
I took Clayton Kershaw off the Mets because he is no longer a prospect.

No offense to Jake, Kudoes to him for trying, but this attempt seems kind of half-assed and lame compared to the prior Smackdown.
As I recall, the previous one had lists from most teams and the ones who didn't submit, the organizer took the time to put together solid lists for each team. This seems kind of rushed and rushed is never a good thing.
Just my 2 cents.

Isn't that kind of like starting the first round of the playoffs without letting everyone submit a roster? Or even telling them there is a playoff? Obviously, this isn't important, it's just for fun, but you only listed 5 players for one tea. You couldn't wait 2 days and email the league letting them know this was being done?
It doesn't sound like you're going to do any commentary on them (though you haven't said you wouldn't either, it's just a guess based on the effort level so far) but that was a big part of the fun of the last one, reading the comparisons position v. position.

So HALF the GM's in the league aren't going to see any commentary at all? Nice.Brewers wrote:I thought that was more important in the 2nd round...releasing a different matchup each day, with commentary etc. Most of the matchups in the 1st round arent close...so I didnt think people would have much interest in reading about it.
You're not going to have much of a competition if people don't know there even is a competition. If you're not going to put a decent effort into a thing, why even bother doing it?
Sorry, but this showdown shit is teh gay. I'm only sorry I wasted time voting in a few of the polls before realising the same things others have echoed in this thread.
And bren was worried about only 5 players being listed? I know I don't have a great farm, let alone one that matches up with JB... But you only bothered to list 3, and they're probably not even my top 3. After I saw that, I didn't bother wasting anymore time, so sorry to everyone's poll I DIDN'T vote in... But I couldn't in good conscience.

Sorry, but if you are going to criticize Jake for running it when nobody else was going to, then run your own instead of bitching or calling it gay. It's an insult to somebody who's just trying to do something cool for the league.
Also Nate, if you didn't like your three listed or whatever list you may have, then instead of bashing the idea of it, just submit a list instead.

Hey Nate, would you mind making a top ten so that we can have one more for the compilation? I think we only have like seven who haven't posted one so far.Reds wrote:Sorry, but this showdown shit is teh gay. Lol, I love it. Call me out on being more of a ghoster or because I didn't take time to participate in some top 10 wank fest over prospects.
My main intent was not to insult Jake, but to offer what I believe to be fair critisism of a flawed project. But let's just ignore the main message of my post.
I will echo bren's message.
Why the rush? Why not do this right? Why not do some research and put together something a bit more polished and well thought out? What's the point otherwise?
There is a whole lot of offseason left, and I don't see the point in this charade if you are going to do some teams a disservice. Its bad enough for teams who didn't care to participate in your prospect wank fest to be subjected to someone's arbitrary rankings, let alone to not even have their team thouroughly researched and ranked. If you didn't do that, why the hell should I even trust your ability to judge the value of prospects?
If you can't understand that, and just want to sling a shot about posting or lack there of, well.. All I have to say is go fuck yourselves. I couldn't give a shit what you think.

Let me ask you a question In regards to your 2nd paragraph. What is the fucking point? Seriously, what is the point if the person who came up with this showdown can't even list my team past 3?
This is why I called it "teh gay".. If someone would have asked me for my top 10, I would have done it. But it wasn't even asked for that I'm aware of, and now I have a shit list of.. 3. So, what's the fucking point now?
Answer... There is none. So have fun boys.

If you didn't take the time to participate in posting a top 10 list for a "prospect wank fest" then why would you take the time to participate in a 'group prospect wank fest' of a prospect showdown? Immediately calling something gay in the first sentence of your post isn't really helping to illustrate your "fair criticism" of a flawed project.
Why the rush? What's the rush exactly? Most of the top 10's that people wanted to post, posted them. The people who haven't posted yet are the people who don't often post on the board too much. JB had rumbled about it earlier this week and Jake decided to take it and run with it. I don't see the problem here.
"let alone to not even have their team thouroughly researched and ranked. If you didn't do that, why the hell should I even trust your ability to judge the value of prospects? " That's why everybody's vote would count as one vote. If you don't like what he said about your team, or the way he listed your prospects, for the teams that didn't post a list, merely post your list of your teams prospects and go from there. Why do we need the commentary, which would create more bias? The listing of names is the least biased method of forming a poll, not adding unnecessary commentary from somebody who apparently cannot judge the value of prospects, despite having a top 5 farm system.
If me asking you to post a top 10 list instead of PMSing about it, or Brett just asking you to post a top 10 list to help fill the leagues out is a "shot at your lack of posting", then I don't know what to tell you. Basically where Bren sounded like a douchebag, you sound like sour grapes.

Obviously no one gives a shit about prospects less than me, but what's the problem with just backing up a step? Make a post telling everyone they have a certain amount of time to post a top ten and state their case and then let the voting happen. No harm, no foul, everybody's happy. That way there's a thorough prospect showdown for those who want one, and no one can complain that they weren't given the time or warning to compete fairly.
Or do what you want. Prospects blow. 2006 IBC CHAMPS MOFOS! PROSPECT-LESS!

I'm appreciative of what Jake has done here - but I think, taking the insults out, Bren and Nate's point is, instead of basically screwing some GM's, why not ask them for a list. Most of us posted our top 10, but that doesn't mean people won't post.
I asked for Power Rankings on a Monday, and by Saturday had 28 teams submitted (or something like that, I'm too lazy to go back and check). The fun of the showdowns and such is getting input from near everyone before you do it.
Nate, how on earth can you quote people here, and go on these long diatribes and not submit a lineup? Did you actually get a computer?

I think some effort definitely could have been made to make sure there was at least a ranked top 10 for every team. I'd have been happy to do one for a few of the missing teams, as would several other GMs I'm sure. Next time call out for volunteers instead of saying "no one else was going to do it."
We can always cound on Aaron for some good old fashioned Revisionist History. Yes Aaron, I was deposed, that's what they call it when you decide to share authority with 5 other people. Way to go teach.Cardinals wrote:How about you do one with commentary then Bren, or do one like the original prospect showdown? Haven't seen you make an effort to help out with anything since you were deposed from power, all you've done is bitch about everything
I gave more time in each of the last six years to the league than most GM's (not all, but most, with the "most" including Aaron), have given over their entire time in the league. So if I don't do powerrankings or something like that I doubt anyone other than an inbred redneck would hold it against me.
If I had access to a computer outside of work that WASN'T my cellphone, I would do a prospect smackdown and I'd put the time and effort into it that such a thing deserves.
Jake, however good his intentions, clearly made a half-hearted go of it. I'm not going to give him a pat on the head like some crappy soccer mom who thinks everything her kid does is good. I gave him props for trying, but the criticisms are more than valid and Aaron would agree with me 100% if he wasn't ass-bent on disagreeing with everything I say. But he's too ignorant and biased to recognize a cogent point if it shook it's titties in his face.

"ha ha"...that pretty much sums it up.
Regardless of the validity of the showdown, look how much activity has been generated over this thing....Mission accomplished Jake. Maybe some of you guys can get your head out of your asses and stop crying that this conversation illustrates the fact that your team is more veteran and less developmental and look at the big picture.....
1) Nobody cares about any team's prospects but their own
2) No one has the right to bash someone else for making an effort who hasn't done anything for the league in over 6 months (not talking about anyone specifically)
3) Anything that adds to league activity could never be a bad thing, even if there's disagreement on methods

I get what Rockies is saying - I do - but I also think this is something that people would have been vestedly interested in...and there was just no chance to do that...
No knock on the effort at all - but I guess I just subscribe to the "if you're going to do it, do it right" philosophy that appears to have abandoned the youth of today. Why the arbitrary rankings? Why not first glance pre-rank the teams? Why not give the teams 48 hours to get a list to you? People in this league love rankings - and I think there was the chance to do something really fun here - and I LOVE the format of having us vote on it - but it just seems like something that could have been an A+ for this league was done as a B-, and that frustrates some...including me.

i still havent seen an answer to the question of when we decided to do this top ten list. the first post in this thread was sunday at 4:30. i saw that my invisible prospect list was going against jakes like 15 min later. now i know im not on here all day everyday but i am on a decent amount and i had no clue this was happening. im going to have to agree and say this was very poorly put together, but im not complaining, never do. i like to participate in everything this league does, and in this case of top 10 prospect lists mine is not very pretty to look at but i would have submitted mine for the fun of it... if i knew about it.
