I'd be interested to see who everybody would pick 1-5 for their rotation...with no Johan Santana involved. Choose a rotation for 2007-2009 (that time period only) and who you would take 1-5 and why. It'd be interesting to see the results of this... Bren gave me the idea by asking me in the first place, and then I asked Shawn and got a fairly different answer.
Don't just give a list as well, tell me why. Maybe we can have actual baseball discussion again
Roy Oswalt: over 220 IP the past 3 seasons, posting ERA's of 3.49, 2.94 and 2.98 with two 20 win seasons in that time span and only being 29 years old. Career ERA of 3.05- can't really argue with that.
Carlos Zambrano: 25 and only improving desptie the terrible amount of walks last year. .208 BAA will allow that to happen, but once he cuts down on the walks he should be winning a cabinent full of Cy's in time...assuming the Cubs don't fuck his arm over.
Chris Carpenter: ok so he's probably my favorite pitcher since I'm a Cardinals fan and oh yeah THEY WON THE WORLD SERIES LAST YEAR ASSHOLES. but anyway, since going to StL he's been awesome, winning a cy young and probably should/could have won last years, but there was no clear cut candidate. He's awesome and a horse. 12 CG the last 2 years.
Scott Kazmir: Improvement in each of his first three years in the bigs, and pretty steady/ drastic improvement. at age 23, theres no reason why that improvement won't continue. Posting a 3.24 ERA in the AL East as a 22 year old sure isn't easy...even if he missed a few starts. Plus he's a lefty. and awesome...but apparently to the mets only worth victor zambrano. ah the mets.
Felix Hernandez: Just beacuse i think he's going to breakout, maybe not this year, but in 2008 or 2009,and appears to have good wortk ethic coming into spring training lighter this year and in the best shape of his life, so theres no reason for him to not improve and run shiznit.
so to conclude:
Oswalt
Zambrano
Carpenter
Kazmir
Hernandez
what? i wrote that at midnight+ class+work.

Since it's just the next 3 years only, Kazmir's arm problems and Hernandez's somewhat disappointing sophmore season keep them out. Harden would be considered if he can ever stay healthy.
He is a stud ... he is healthy and durable... he has a good pitching coach and a good "pitcher's friendly" catcher ... and if that isn't enough, he is adding a change-up.
Webb - AS CBS Sportsline reported, "Webb, who went 16-8 with a 3.10 ERA and made his first All-Star team, threw a career-best 235 innings, which ranked second in the NL. All this on his way to Cy Young honors in 2006. Webb has emerged as a top five Fantasy starting pitcher and will be off draft boards in the early rounds this year. "
John Lackey - Need I say more:
YEAR GS IP W SV H ER BB SO ERA WHIP
2006 Totals 33 217 13 0 203 86 72 190 3.56 1.26
King Felix - You all know the numbers and the potential - here, as Paul Harvey says, is the rest of the story:
The man is ripped. The pudginess that led to worries he was morphing into another Bartolo Colon has been transformed into solid muscle. After admittedly reporting to camp out of shape last spring, and paying a steep price for it, Hernandez resolved to not make the same mistake this year.
At the end of last season, the Mariners implored him to watch his diet this winter and follow their workout guidelines. After taking two weeks off at home in Venezuela immediately after the season, at the team's behest, Hernandez set to work. (Seattle Times)
Scott Olsen - Olsen turned in six straight quality starts before struggling some his final two times out to finish 12-10 with a 4.04 ERA. Love his K/BB ratio ... concerned about his HR allowed. Still look at him as the number #1 breakout SP of 2007!
Since it's 07-09, I'd go with guys who are a little more proven than some of the ones listed above (Weaver, Felix, Kazmir)
In Alphabetical order...
Carpenter - I was a skeptic, admittedly, but I have, obviously, come around. Back to back Cy Young quality seasons and he's mine, all mine, bwa ha ha hah ahaha....
Halladay - Probably the second best SP in the AL right now.
Oswalt - 6 seasons, 98 wins. 2 seasons with an era of 3 or higher.
Peavy - Had a rough 06 but he's got the goods IMO.
Webb - Durable with a nasty grounder and came into his own at age 26. Really got his walks under control.
No Need for Explainations on the first four as they've all been covered above...
R. Oswalt
C. Carpenter
B. Webb
R. Halladay (assuming no injuries)
C. Young - Posted a whip of 1.13 and era of 3.46 all while holding while amassing 146Ks and holding opponents to a .206 batting average
Honorable Mentions:
Zambrano
Liriano (if he was healthy)
Carpenter and Halladay I think are the clear second tier behind Santana right now, so they're be 2/3.
As for 4/5/6, Oswalt would be next for me, and Felix just has to be in there. On the last one I think that a very even case could be made for Peavy, Webb, Sabathia and Zambrano. Zambrano may have had the least impressive year of any of them, maybe even including Peavy, but he'd probably be my #6. Webb and Sabathia haven't done it as consistently, and Peavy just has such a pitcher's haven (including the OF that he had working for him) that he should be putting up huge numbers to be considered.
Halladay: Best RH pitcher in the game the past 3 seasons
Haren: Gets overlooked, but has outstanding control and nasty K-pitch
Sabathia: Surprised he hasn't been picked more
Webb: Amazing how this injury filled season makes people forget how dominant he is
Bedard: Just to have another LHP....
Honerable Mention: (other than the obvious Peavy, etc)
Josh Johnson
Justin Verlander
Josh Beckett (really....no one?)
Cole Hamels (nearly picked him over Bedard, but Bedard was sick in 2007, injured in 2008, sick in 2009 - before another injury)
