Rank Your Will Ferrell Movies

In honor of the release of Step Brothers, I thought it would be run to revisit a topic we've discussed in this forum before - Will Ferrell. I just saw his latest release, Step Brothers, at my local Muvico last night and I really, really enjoyed it. It definitely ranks high among the most popular Will Ferrell vehicles. Here's a list of the last ten:

Step Brothers
Blades of Glory
Semi-Pro
Stranger Than Fiction
Talledega Nights
Bewitched
Kicking and Screaming
Anchorman
Elf
Old School

How would you rank them? My list would look like this:

1) Anchorman
2) Talledega Nights (the theatrical version, dont watch the uncut, it sucks)
3) Step Brothers
4) Old School
5) Semi-Pro
6) Elf
7) Blades of Glory
8) Kicking and Screaming
9) Bewitched

I left Stranger Than Fiction off the list completely because, although awesome, it's so out of Will Ferrell's niche that it just doesn't seem right to associate it with these other films.

I saw Step Brothers Friday night and enjoyed it.

1. Anchorman
2. Talladega Nights
3. Old School
4. Step Brothers
5. Elf
6. Blades of Glory
7. Kicking and Screaming (I'd rank it higher if they'd had Will Ferrell's team get destroyed by his dad's at the end.)
8. Semi-Pro

I never saw Stranger than Fiction or Bewitched so I can't rank them. I'd throw Wedding Crashers in near the top if you count it though

I take SNL over all of them.

Especially Celebrity Jeopardy...absolute brilliance.
2008-2023 Mets: 1,143-1,296...469%
2006-2008 Rockies: 242-244...498%

IBC Total: 1,385-1,540...474%
2022: lost WC
2023: lost WC
2024: 1st NL East; lost WC

Indeed. Stranger than Fiction was better than any of those other movies. All movies in that category have basically been extended SNL sketches, and the only ones that didn't drag were Old School and Blades of Glory, mostly because it wasn't all Ferrell playing his dumbass character.

I do think at this point he needs to freshen things up. The whole time I was watching Semi-Pro, I knew everything that was coming. It was a cookie cutter Will Ferrell movie. So was Step Brothers. That doesn't mean they weren't really good, well, Semi-Pro was okay, but lets shake things up a little next time

I was just telling JP that a couple of scenes in Step Brothers made me cry. It wasn't a classic probably, but it definitely had several funny scenes.

1. Wedding Crashers
2. Anchorman
3. Old School
4. Step Brothers
5. Elf
6. Talledega Nights

- pretty big gap -

7. Blades of Glory
8. Kicking and Screaming

- another gap -

9. Semi-Pro

Stranger Than Fiction - It's really hard to rank this
Bewitched - Same here, but a much worse movie

I actually thought Blades of Glory was a lot funnier than Talladega Nights. There were scenes in Talledega that made me laugh a lot louder than Blades of Glory, but Blades of Glory didn't drag to me like Talladega did. Also at what point did we start abbreviating Will Ferrell's body of work to WFM?

Old School - a comedy classic
Step Brothers - I'm sorry, I nearly pissed myself this whole movie
Anchorman - not as rewatchable as I thought it'd be, but still great
Blades of Glory - truly underrated, was hilarious
Talledega Nights - hated it the first time, loved every viewing since
Elf - liked, didn't love
Kicking and Screaming - not as bad as I thought it was going to be
Bewitched - just truly bad
Semi-Pro - just truly horrendous

Stranger Than Fiction - just doesn't count here
