Delayed IBC Season

Post by Cardinals »

Caught your attention with the subject didn't I?

2008 Projection Disk!
Starting Monday, March 3, you can place your orders for the 2008 Projection Disk. Starting this year, we will do only one release of the Projection Disk containing the final team rosters and updates. We will release the 2008 Projection disk on April 4, 2008.

For the most part, the season starts on March 31st, excluding the Red Sox/ A's series. So we will be delayed on the start of our season by a good week or two as it will take time for waivers to sort out as well as successfully making the database.

Maybe this is just getting lost in the shuffle of everything that's going on, or maybe nobody cares...

But am I the only one pissed off about this? I don't wanna delay the season. I love Opening Day, not just in the MLB, but in the IBC too, though to a lesser degree. DMB is on my shit list right now.

It does suck, but there's not a lot we can do. There were some rumours that DMB might not have a projection disk at all this year which, obviously, would suck even worse.

Local Yokels at the DMB forums are trying (likely unsuccessfully) to get two releases again. So there's some sort of hope, but I highly doubt we'll get it any sooner than April 4th, which is pretty crappy. We'll be a good two weeks (at least) behind the MLB season.

I have full faith that JP SIMin' can get us caught up in a hurry.

Now that I have complained and led a rebellion there will be a March 19 release. We are saved.

You rule. Sounds like the new DMB management is not very impressive.

Seriously. That's pretty awesome. And I've also heard the new DMB mgmt doesn't seem too invested in the future of DMB. I fear that some year soon we'll get to March and find out there will be no projection release at all for DMB. That would suck.

its premature to bring this up, but at some point, maybe next offseason, we as a league should have a discussion about alternatives to diamondmind.

not to replace DMB, but merely as a backup plan in case they eliminate projection disks or the company just goes downhill altogether.

it can't hurt for the IBC to have a backup plan in place with an alternative program in mind, just so we can act quickly and give everyone as much time as possible to make adjustments should the need arise.

Those discussions have already come underway in ExCo when there was some concern that we wouldn't have a disk at all for this season. Obviously there's a lot less urgency now to that issue, but there are some idea out there. IMO, PECOTA is the strongest projection system out there. Unfortauntely it's also not offered on a projection disk currently so we may have to either look at another system or a way to automate importing PECOTA into a DMB season.

Someone should get into BP's ear about releasing it as a projection disc. If they think there's a market I bet they would do it.

The problem w/ using another projection system is that DMB is the only one that offers L/R splits, which have a significant effect on how the simulation goes.

They'd probably need permission from DMB to use their system, but I might be able to put a bee in an ear...

Given the Diamond Mind's new ownership seems to have no real passion or drive to do anything with the CD version of the game, I don't think reaching some sort of agreement to make even less work for DMB to keep their engine running in some capacity would be a difficult obstacle to overcome.

I've talked with the Oregon side of Diamond Mind, and Pat does not see the disk going away. Their objective on the Imagine Sports side is to get the in-line game to have more features like the disk game has. I'm very confident (for now) that we will be using the disk in '09 as well.

Given DMB's lack of having their act together lately, I'd rather err on the side of caution here.

While I don't necessarily doubt this, I do HIGHLY doubt that we'll ever see a Diamond Mind version 10.

And that's a real bummer. They should integrate online league play by buying Shawn's work here and packaging it with a new DMB 10 as some kind of "DMB League Manager" product. Minimal effort and they'd be guaranteed to have at least a small core market for it for the next few years among the sim league addicts like us.

Even without all the integration for the websites and leagues, they still could do a better job defining some roles, such as setup men and LOOGY's, pitch counts, etc... While there's no doubt it's a great product, V10 has been in the works for awhile with no updates at all, and given that, with the new ownership, I just don't see it happening.

I would love to be wrong on this one though.
