Advice to Hankenstein
Think twice before you take a wrecking ball to "The House that Ruth Built." The Red Sox have two world titles to the pinstripes zero in the 21st century. Clemens, Pettite, Giambi, Sheffield, Grimsley, Knoblauch, Leyritz, Justice and others have embarrassed the game as steroid users. The Mets just beat the Yankees out in the bidding for the game's best starting pitcher, and you're competing with the Blue Jays for 2nd place and the AL Wild Card.
The Babe is pissed. Moving out of his house will not make him any happier. He might just drop a 100 year curse this time.

Yeah...sucks to be the Yankees.
Good thing they don't have one of the best farms in baseball, the highest revenue stream in major league sports & the largest fan base of any professional team in the nation, if not the world.
I hate the Yankees...I hate even more that they had to decide to build a new stadium a week after the Mets announced their plans...and the Yankees tried to pay extra money to expedite their stadium to have it open a year earlier than Citi Field will.
Haters.

I would say that the Yankees have more transplants around the nation than any other team, and a new Yankee fan is born in NY metro every 20 minutes.
Who might have a better representation in pure numbers? You take the most popular team in the most dense region of the US, and logic would dictate that they would capture more fans than competitive markets.
What team would have more fans in sheer numbers?

I can't think of a nba, nfl, or nhl team that would have a larger and more widespread fan base than the yanks. and I definitely can't come up with with a baseball team that's bigger. I would have to agree that just from a non-scientific, unofficial kind of count, that the yanks are the biggest franchise in the nation.

I can say with 100% certainty they don't have the largest fan base in the world...hands down that's Manchester United (followed by about 10 other soccer super powers)
As far as the U.S. is concerned I'd say the Steelers would probably top them in terms of fan base....both the Redskins & Packers would probably be included in the discussion as well. The only hockey team that would be remotely close would be the Red Wings. In baseball I think the Cubs, Cardinals, Dodgers, and Red Sox could all give them a run for their money.

It'll be an interesting study. Manchester United & other various soccer clubs entered my mind, but when you take into account that amount of baseball fans in Korea, Japan & China that root for the Yankees because A) that's the only team they know & B) Godzilla, Wang, etc.
I was then balancing the baseball population of eastern asian countries against independant rivalries of european countries, and I thought the Yanks had a chance of world-wide popularity.
I can honestly say I have not met many midwest fans in Florida, NY or GA (the 3 places I've lived). The majority in the South East region either follows the home team, or have north east alliances because they are transplanted.

Don't forget that the Rockets have to be up there with all those Chinese people watching Yao, that Yao vs. Yi showdown a couple of weeks ago had 200 million viewers in China (by comparison the Super Bowl had a mere 97 million viewers here). The scale of China's population is such that if you have China you pretty much shit on everything else in terms of numbers of fans.
