Re: 2024 IBC San Diego Padres
Though the end of May and we are almost caught up with the SIM in the IBC ... so with games played from March 20 through June 2 here is where the 2024 IBC Padres are ...
First SIM saw us at 1-11 ... the second SIM boosted us up to 3-15 which, between the two SIMs, included a 14 game losing streak that ended with a 2-1 victory on April 12. Since then the Padres have gone 32-12, including a 10 game win streak resulting in 35-27 record with a slim 3.5 game lead on the D-backs in the NL West with a long way to go.
With a postive 54 run differential, overall the Padres are in the middle of the pack offensively compiling a .237/.307/.405 slash line while leading the NL with 114 doubles and 93 steals. Kyle Tucker leads the way with a .275/.351/.485 line along with 10 HR, 37 RBI and 12 SB. Christian Walker and Kyle Schwarber lead the team with 14 HR while Walker has 41 RBI. Schwarber has scored 44 runs and he leads the NL with 52 BB. All three of them populate the top 10 of numerous league leader boards and, obviously, the team's future success is fairly dependent on their future health.
The Padres are tied for second in the NL in team ERA at 3.42 and have a nice 506/161 K/BB while only giving up 49 HR which is second best the NL though their HR/9 of 0.8 is tied for 1st. So far the Padres starting pitchers are well ahead of the relief pitchers as their Quality Start % of .677 leads the NL and Slade Cecconi is tied for first in individual QS% at .917. Alan Winans (6-0), Justin Verlander (6-1) and Cecconi (6-5) lead the team in wins with 6; Charlie Morton leads in K with 85. Eric Swanson has been successful in 9 of 11 save opportunities since he returned from the IL. As a team they have allowed only 34 SB which is second lowest in the NL.
Although the Padres fielding % of .986 is slightly above the league average, it is disappointingly mid-pack.
Long ways to go but happy the Padres dug out of a deep hole. Hopefully the return of Alex Cobb (106 ERA+) with bullpen help in Brock Burke (119 ERA+), James Karinchak (112 ERA+) & Josh Sborz (110 ERA+) will help as will the return of the starting SS: Geraldo Perdomo ...

Re: 2024 IBC San Diego Padres
End of June 2024 finds the IBC Padres a fortunate 2 games ahead of the D-backs in the NL West with a record of 50-38 and a 4 game lead in wins. During the month of June the Padres went 17-11 in spite of losing Kyle Tucker, JT Realmuto, Christian Yelich (back now), Will Brennan and Justin Verlander to injuries. As the Padres begin play in July, Kyle Schwarber joins the IL list but it is expected that Alex Cobb, Brock Burke and JT Realmuto will be returning to active status soon ...
Cumulatively the team has slipped into the bottom quarter of the NL in offensive statistics with a .233/.309/.389 team total although their 388 runs scored is the third most while their 153 doubles, 305 walks and 146 SB do lead the league. Surprisingly Nick Gordon leads the Padres in hits with 89 while Kyle Schwarber leads with 20 HR, 57 runs, 66 walks, and 99 K. Christian Walker leads with 51 RBI and Christian Yelich with 23 SB. I say surprisingly because Gordon was expected to be a versatile UT but he has played in 86 of 88 games due to the aforementioned injuries.
Pitching has been the savior for these Padres logging a 4th best ERA of 3.41 and a quality K/BB of 736/233 and only allowing the second fewest HR: 79. The SB/CS of 51 (lowest in the league)/31 as well as the QS% of .693 (second best in the league) reflect well of the team's efforts and achievements. Slade Cecconi leads the SP in IP at 117.2, 15 QS and ERA at 2.22. The ageless Charlie Morton leads with 120 K and his 51 walks lead the NL (ugh!). Alan Winans leads the team with 10 wins and his his 10-1 record resulting in a .909 W% currently tops the NL. Eric Swanson has 13 saves and an .813 S%.
Defensively the Padres are disappointingly in the middle of the pack with a league average F% of .985. with a league lowest SB% of .622.
July appears to start out with a tough test as the Padres face both the Rangers and the D-backs on the road to get the month started. Got to hope the depth of the team can continue to carry the team until Tucker, et. al. return. For example, Rafael Lantigua has played all 88 games producing a .268/.329/.394 line with 24 doubles and 22 steals while starting 58 games at 3B and 30 games in the OF ... prior to the start of the season he was not in the Padres starting lineup.

Re: 2024 IBC San Diego Padres
End of July 2024 finds the IBC Padres in second place in the NL West - 1/2 game back of the D-backs in the NL West with a record of 63-47 and a 1 game disadvantage in losses. During the month of July the Padres went 13 - 9 as the Padres continued to be without Kyle Tucker, Christian Yelich (back again), Justin Verlander and Alex Cobb. Fortunately Kyle Schwarber, Brock Burke and JT Realmuto returned to active status soon but the loss of Christian Walker will likely negatively impact the Padres entering August ...
Cumulatively the team has moved into the midpack of the NL in offensive statistics with a .240/.313/.397 team total and their 180 SB do lead the league. Nick Gordon continues to lead the Padres in hits with 106 while Kyle Schwarber leads with 25 HR, 68 runs, 72 walks, and 123 K. Christian Walker leads with 67 RBI and Christian Yelich with 29 SB. Dominic Keegan has supplanted JT Realmuto as the primary Catcher as he has been on fire hitting .346/.418/.481 with 3 HR in 25 games.
Pitching continues to be the savior for these Padres logging a 4th best ERA of 3.54 and a quality K/BB of 922/239. Charlie Morton leads the SP in IP at 153.0 and 160 K. Slade Cecconi paves the Padres way with 18 QS (tied for the league lead) and Justin Verlander in ERA at 2.21. Alan Winans is stalled with the team lead in wins with 10. Eric Swanson has 18 saves and an .857 S%.
Defensively the Padres remain in the middle of the pack with a league average F% of .984 slightly below the league average of .985.
52 games remain the regular season. August begins with an off day followed by series with Rockies and Pirates before facing the tough Marlins - currently 2 games back of the Padres for the second NL Wild Card slot. Jose Miranda and Otto Lopez are returning to active status ... hopefully Walker, Tucker, Yelich, Verlander and Cobb will be shortly behind. Also James Karinchak's eventual return should bolster the pen ... And, of course, the IBC trade deadline is August 31 ... Will the Padres sit tight, mortgage the future to remain a contender in 2024 or suffer through a bad month of August akin to the start of the season - and blow it all up? We'll see ...

Re: 2024 IBC San Diego Padres
The end of August 2024 finds the IBC Padres back in first place in the NL West - 2 games in front of the D-backs with a record of 82-56 and a 3 game advantage in wins. During the month of August the Padres went 19 - 9 as the Padres continued to be without Christian Yelich (back again), Christain Walker as well as Justin Verlander and Alex Cobb for most of the month. The Padres also traded hurt Kyle Tucker (for Austin Riley) and JT Realmuto (for Rhys Hoskins). Fortunately Kyle Schwarber and Brock Burke returned to active status. Unable to make any deadline trades, the Padres signed aging veterans Yuli Gurriel and Seth Brown to help the bench for the remainder of the season ...
Cumulatively the team has slipped into the bottom third of the NL in batting in offensive statistics with a .238/.311/.395 team total while their 209 SB do lead the league. Nick Gordon continues to lead the Padres in hits with 134 while Kyle Schwarber leads with 32 HR, 89 runs, 87 RBI, 86 walks, and 180 K. Christian Yelich with 29 SB. Riley performed well slashing .307/.369/.640 with 8 HR, 14 RBI and 14 R in 19 games before he got hurt and will likely miss the remainder of the regular season. Hoskins has also been useful hitting .233/.340/.411 with 4 HR, 13 RBI and 11 R in 26 games.
Pitching continues to be the savior for these Padres logging a 3rd best ERA of 3.48 and a quality K/BB of 1157/349. Charlie Morton leads the SP with 201 K. Slade Cecconi paves the Padres way with 191.1 IP, 22 QS (2nd in the NL) and Justin Verlander in ERA at 2.26. Alan Winans is stalled with the team lead in wins with 11 as he is tied with Cecconi. Eric Swanson has 24 saves and an .857 S%. Pitching is going to be key the rest of the season as Verlander and Cobb have returned as SP and the addition of Nestor Cortes with 2 victories in 4 games started along with a 3.86 ERA and 21/6 K/BB in 25.2 IP bodes well ... a rotation of Verlander, Morton, Imanaga, Cortes and Cecconi allows Winans and Ashby to fortify the pen along with newly signed Tyler Matzek.
Defensively the Padres remain in the middle of the pack with a league average F% of .984 ... the league average is .984.
24 games remain the regular season. September begins with a game facing the pesky Rays followed by a day off. The road schedule continues facing the tough Tigers - currently battling Pat G's Guardians for the AL Central lead. Following that the Padres face the Giants, the Mariners and Giants again. Home then to face the Astros and White Sox. Finally on the road in LA and Arizona to close out the month. That last series should be a doozy.
Hope to stay strong enough to make the playoffs ... getting Wandy Peralta back soon will be helpful. Getting Walker back would be awesome ...

Re: 2024 IBC San Diego Padres
The 2024 regular season ended with the IBC Padres finishing in 2nd place in the NL West with a 94 -68 record - a whooping 8 games behind the Diamondbacks. Dave's team simply dominated September going an incredible 23-3 while the Pads had their second worst month going 12-12. Austin Riley never returned and the waiver wire pick-ups just couldn't repeat what a healthier Padres squad had accomplished earlier in the season though 41 year old Yuli Gurriel splitting time between 1B and 3B gave his all hitting.337/.374/.478 with 12 runs, 9 RBI and 2 HR in 25 games.
Only 1 player, Rafael Lantigua, played in all 162 games. Originally signed for his defensive prowess and ability to play many positions decently, the many injuries forced him from being a late inning defensive replacement into a season that saw him garner 592 PA and he lead the Padres with 34 doubles. Nick Gordon lead the team in AB with 589 (624 PA) and he lead the team in BA (Min 502 AB) at .265 and hits with 156. Kevin Kiermaier closed out his IBC career leading the Padres with 39 steals and 5 triples while playing stellar CF defense and hitting a solid (for a batter who mostly hit 9th) .250/.300/.379. Though he too spent some time on the IL, Kyle Schwarber was clearly the Padres most valuable position player leading the team (Min 502 AB) in OBP: .349, SL%: .482, HR: 34, runs: 96, RBI: 92, BB: 99 & K: 200. Overall the team finished in the lower third of the NL with a combined .239/.309/.393 though their 235 SB lead the league by a bunch.
The Padres pitching stayed fine all year in spite of a rash of injuries ending up 3rd in the league with a team ERA of 3.38. Slade Cecconi lead the team in wins: 12, ERA: 2.65, WHIP: 1.00 & IP: 214.1. Charlie Morton lead with 220 K, 83 BB and 20 GIDP. Both Morton and Justin Verlander had 2 CG. Shota Imanaga lead the Padres with 33 GS. Eric Swanson earned 28 saves out of 32 opportunities while Wandy Peralta lead the way with a meager 11 holds. Late trade pick-up Nestor Cortes had a nice month going 4-1 with a 3.33 ERA before getting hurt and missing the playoffs. As an aside, I think Cortes was the only 20 game winner in the 2024 IBC going 20-10 for the Cardinals, Yankees and Padres.
The defense ended up mid-pack in the NL as the team's fielding percentage was .984 - also the league average.
Onto the playoffs where the Padres face the red hot Reds ...
