I'll let someone on ExCo confirm, but my understanding of the rules was once the depth charts came out any unowned player is subject to zips bidding restrictions. While the depth chart may not have affected your decision-making, it may have prevented other owners from making the same move.
I’ll just release him. The timing really sucks as I had definitely planned on signing him as soon as Padres released him, I was just waiting for him to get off waivers.
Just a quick question, if I had put a waiver claim in for him before the depth chart came out. Would that have been illegal too? Just wondering.

To clarify, the zips rule is that once Dan Z tweets his depth chart graphic or information about a team's zips, we wait until bidding on those players. We haven't been presented with this exact scenario of waivers/deadline for bidding, but I would say he should be bid on.
