Urgent Draft Discussion
Guys,
We need a resolution to this Dave/draft issue.
At hand: Dave claims he had been on the site over the weekend and didn't see an announcement of the draft start date. That is true; there was not an announcement thread. The rule has the draft start date and the 2019 draft thread had players selected beginning late last week. He missed his 24-hour slot for drafting, was skipped, BP selected and Dave feels slighted.
The resolution: do we let Dave make up his pick, does this create a precedent, how do we handle this throughout the rest of the draft? What about the effect on BP, who did nothing wrong?
Personally, I think it's easy to understand how to navigate the site, but I also know when the draft date is. Dave is fairly new and there was a 2020 draft and 2019 draft thread, which may be confusing. And there was no announcement. We're also probably going to experience this with Brennan in 3 hours. I emailed Brennan this morning. I also emailed Dave, but it was after his time expired. I think we can cure this if we do it fast, but I want to know what BP's take is on it.

Re: Urgent Draft Discussion
Dave just emailed me this morning saying:
Personally, not sure how you miss it if you're checking the forum for unread posts.Hi JP,
I just saw (because a couple people let me know after my pick expired) that I missed my pick. I'm not sure how I should have known that it even started. I've been on the site several times the past couple days, and saw the announcement of the draft order, but not a link, E-mail or anything that would indicate the draft started.
I was even looking at various threads on the board index, but must have missed the right one because it said "2019 Draft" rather than "2020 Draft".
I would request that I be allowed to pick at #5 still....unless I missed something....

Re: Urgent Draft Discussion
I agree and I mentioned to him the Quick Links menu for unread posts. He said he never got a tutorial on the site. I think there's a level of personal responsibility that needs to be shown here, but if you're not in the rhythm of the league, I can see the confusion. That's why I'm a little torn here. If I saw something and was confused, I would post the question to the league.Pirates wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 2:39 pm Dave just emailed me this morning saying:

Re: Urgent Draft Discussion
Four other people picked before he came up. He must have never clicked on the thread. I've been bad lately about not reading every thread, but everyone knows the draft starts on Feb 1. I think he fucked up and is making excuses to try and get his pick back.
I'm okay with letting him have his selection that he asked for, and since you can't set up a queue this year we may experience this a handful of times. Do we allow them to make the pick when they get on the site? I think we need to set a rule. My solution: if you missed your pick, you state your desire to make your pick but you can't make it until the current person on the clock has made theirs

Re: Urgent Draft Discussion
I was sure surprised that we aren’t doing the draft as we have in the past ... certainly not something we discussed amongst ExCo. I have no reason to not believe Dave as I have found him to be an honest guy in the BCMBL as well as here ... nor do I have any desire to screw BP. Maybe we’ll get lucky and BP will okay with switching picks ...
I think to try to alleviate this happening any more this draft we should ask/insist that GMs email the person following them when he has made his pick notifying the following GM that he is on the clock.

Aaron: wouldn't your solution still not solve the issue? You're saying if you get skipped, you post who you want but you have to wait for the person behind you to pick? Isn't that what happened here?
Jim: What do you mean by the draft isn't being done as in the past? We haven't had the queue on this site since Shawn updated ibcleague.com. I think we did it similarly last year. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=10604

Agree we should send some notifications out as a courtesy. I think that is smart.WhiteSox wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 4:04 pm I was sure surprised that we aren’t doing the draft as we have in the past ... certainly not something we discussed amongst ExCo. In terms of how we're doing the draft, there's not much ExCo discussion to be had on that front. We did it this way last year and we're doing it this year because Shawn doesn't have the bandwidth to recreate the draft right now on the new site instance.

Re: Urgent Draft Discussion
I stand corrected … I did not recall that we used a thread last year. In my mind I honestly thought we'd using the queue again this season until I saw the posy on draft day that we weren't ...Tigers wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 5:06 pm Jim: What do you mean by the draft isn't being done as in the past? That list we had last year is helpful for searches while the draft is going on. Hope we use it again this year.

Planning on it. Any comments on a solution for the current issue? Re: Urgent Draft Discussion
As stated above I have no reason to doubt Dave ... ironically I noticed in last year’s thread he delayed his pick so Ian could make his pick in the first round. And BP didn’t do anything wrong either. Wish I had been paying closer attention so I could have notified Dave ... got no magic wand to fix this now. Ultimately it is probably whether or not BP is willing to give up Vaughan ... I will support whatever position ExCo takes.

I'm not quite sure what the right thing to do is but if you all thing it's for me to give up the player then I will.
Re: Urgent Draft Discussion
I think notifying the next pick is a good way to go. I don't think we should make BP give up his pick, but I'm going to roll with whatever y'all decide

Re: Urgent Draft Discussion
I'm going to propose Dave get Vaughn in this situation because I think he was probably the consensus next pick and Dave posted that's who he wanted. I do think this negatively affects BP, but he also doesn't lose anything because he still makes the pick that's actually his. I don't think Dave posted about Vaughn simply because that's who BP took. I think that's the logical next pick.
Part of me doesn't want to reward bad behavior here because I do think it's easy to see that our draft had started. That said, I give him the benefit of the doubt because he's newish (last couple years), there were threads that stated both 2019 and 2020, which may have been confusing, there's no queue that could auto pick, and there was no real announcement with the actual start date. I also agree with Jim that he's upstanding and not attempting to gain anything here. I think we all assumed everyone understood that it was a 2/1 start date.
I don't get the sense anyone here wants to make a proposal because it sucks either way, but I'm tossing this out. And I think we may have the same situation in Brennan, whom I emailed this morning. I hope he doesn't get skipped, too, because we can't deal with this for 150 picks. So my concern is that this sets a precedent with other issues and if someone gets skipped, it creates a problem.
So, my proposal is this: Dave gets Vaughn and if anyone gets skipped in the first round ONLY, the draft is paused to make up that pick. After the first round, if you get skipped, you make up at any time, but you get no pause/additional time.

Re: Urgent Draft Discussion
I think we probably could have been clearer about the draft start and I think the easiest resolution is to just rewind time and have him pick like he originally would have. Agreed that Vaughn is the natural next pick and BP ends up with who he would have gotten at his slot. We should probably make an official announcement about the draft in case anyone else hasn’t noticed yet.
I asked Aaron to notify me when he picked and I think it would be great if everyone else did that for the next person up too. I’m not sure about pausing the clock for a first round pick though, that seems a bit lenient.

Re: Urgent Draft Discussion
With Jim, Pat and Shawn on board with Vaughn to Arizona and Brett being fine with it, I went ahead and announced it as the move.
