Pokemon Go
Pokemon Go
Alright, who else is addicted? I know Danny is from his other post, and Nils started playing before he left for Portugal for a week.
Anyone else? A shorter list might be of who isn't playing...

FWIW, the app has used 377mb of my data over the span of half a month. Two related notes:Astros wrote:I am not - Unfortunately I don't have unlimited data these days!
First, I play a LOT.
Second, my wifi at home SUCKS, so I'm often not using wifi when playing at home.
In general the app uses a lot less data than I expected it to. How much that means to your current data cap is up to you.
Haha...I'm not. Never played it, although some of my co-workers do and found a Pokemon in my office. I'm fascinated by the technology, though, and wonder where it's going to lead us. I think there are some pretty cool possibilities, and we're headed in some interesting directions.
(The Mejia piece I posted was spliced together from a handful of stories about his hit streak, so I can't take credit for the Pokemon line.)

Me and a friend of mine were at a cigar bar on the patio a couple weeks ago. Hundreds of people walked by and I would say 1 out of 25 were not playing Pokemon. And for the people that claim its great and you're interacting with your friends and exercising, nobody was speaking with their friends. It was sad to watch, granted I was drinking and making fun of all of them as they passed

I am not because first, I don't need to be taking useless photos of every place I have been to capture an imaginary creature for some company to collect. Second, their is no end goal to the game, it is just to bypass time, therefore I rather play other games on my phone with an end result of actually winning or losing. Finally, I give our ADHD society another two weeks with the game before they are bored with it and if they haven't created the battle feature by then, people will just find a new time wasting vice.

I think this depends a lot on how quickly they move the game forward, but then, no way did I or anyone else I know from the beta test think the game had the possibility to become anywhere near this popular. I was at one of my favorite taprooms last week and almost everyone there was playing (40-50 people there), including the bartenders. And they weren't just playing, they were also socializing across the groups they came with as people found out who was on what team.Pirates wrote:no way, Pokemon is gonna be here for awhile. It was pretty wide-reaching in the 90s. I was never into it, but a lot of my friends were growing up.
As for the lack of an endgame, it's not as though Clash of Clans, Mobile Strike, Game of War or other super-popular mobile games have endgames either. Arguably what makes them so popular is the lack of an endgame and the collaborative, social aspect. While some people want an endgame (for some people catching all 151 Pokemon is the endgame) it's certainly not necessary for long-term success.
Whether it endures or not, I don't know, but I've definitely never seen another phenomenon like it.

I play Hearthstone on my phone...atleast then I have to think about what I am doing rather than flicking my phone all day hoping to catch'em all.Padres wrote:

I feel old. The only game I play on my phone is a truly unhealthy amount of Scrabble. I constantly have about 50 games going. I'm 9581-3586-29 since 2011. That's 13,196 games, so "unhealthy amount" may be an understatement. The only thing that sucks is that most opponents play on Facebook and cheat by going to anagram sites between turns. My phone is too small for all that web-surfery, and I'm too lazy to put in the time it takes to cheat. The worst are the old ladies. Grandmas cheat like crazy.

I was prepared to comment about how grown men playing fake baseball to generate fake stats should not be making fun of things. But this has been mostly civilized. Color me shocked.

Not sure on the ages. I'm kinda like Danny in that I think the technology is interesting. As Gudim said, I'm wasting enough of my time on Earth rooting for players whom I've never met to play well and not get hurt at the same time hoping JB's team completely dismantles. That's enough for me.Padres wrote:But there's a Charizard in your tall grass...Tigers wrote:Nope. #damnmillenials #getoffmylawn
Wait a minute, aren't you two years younger than me?
My dad, who is kind of a conspiracy theory nut, thinks that Pokemon Go was developed by foreign governments (read: terrorists) so that people playing it could serve as unwitting on-the-ground spies. That's why there are lots of Pokestops at police stations, military bases, large public places like parks and stadiums. Not to mention at municipal water supplies. So the bad guys can actually see access points, etc., to these places. Because a kid with a smartphone is the best source of intel for ISIS. Like I said...he's a nut. But I do find that to be kind of hilarious.

Not going to be hilarious when the CIA reports come out in five years and this is true. Also, Castro killed Kennedy and Jimmy Hoffa is under the new Giants Stadium.Indians wrote:My dad, who is kind of a conspiracy theory nut, thinks that Pokemon Go was developed by foreign governments (read: terrorists) so that people playing it could serve as unwitting on-the-ground spies. I've seen that particular conspiracy theory before. It's less crazy than the ones about Denver Airport, but not by much.Indians wrote:My dad, who is kind of a conspiracy theory nut, thinks that Pokemon Go was developed by foreign governments (read: terrorists) so that people playing it could serve as unwitting on-the-ground spies. Do tell us about the underground prison at DIA run by the lizard people. What do you know?Padres wrote:I've seen that particular conspiracy theory before. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go prep for Her Royal Majesty's arrival...
