Well, since his approved visa is breaking news I'd like to wait until we can get an official signing date from MiLB before we break out the bold text. He's 21 so he should start stateside and therefore have a MiLB player page with his signing date in a maximum of a couple weeks. If the signing is listed as 3/2012 I've wasted a roster slot until then.

To be clear, I'm saying that in the end the listed 11/2010 signing date will stand in MLB's eyes and you contend that this constitutes an entirely new contract and will be listed as a 3/2012 signing on his MiLB player page. Correct?

"Righthander Jose Rafael DePaula, who agreed to sign for a $500,000 bonus with the Yankees in November 2010, has had his visa approved by the U.S. Consulate, according to Charisse Espinosa-Dash, who is one of DePaula's representatives. DePaula is expected to travel to the United States next week for his physical, one of the final contingencies of his contract being approved and his bonus being paid."

I don't think a contract is valid unless it's approved. Jag also posted that the contract was contingent upon him getting his visa, which it took him over a year to do.

MLB changed their rules after Carlos Mattias/Martinez and players under investigation are no longer allowed to play in the DSL so it makes it harder to tell if he actually was a Yankee and not just training at their facility. MLB pretty much has to call the contract a 2010 deal because all of the other owners are going to pitch a fit if it turns out the Yankees were able to sequester a free agent at their training complex for two years and somehow get an additonal two years of service time by wording the contract in such a way that it didn't 'finalize' until a date much later than when the deal was first announced. The only question is whether the IBC is going to go by MLB's official signing date when it comes out or if we're going to start generating our own IBC signing dates based on criterion yet to be determined, which sounds like a real nightmare even if events like this turn out to be once in a blue moon type occurrences.
