This needed to happen. Mench would have had to accept a minor league deal to keep playing in the U.S. He's expected to make about $2 million in Japan.

I don't think they make size 8.5 fitted hats in Japan...poor Mench.
Ah well ... for $1.8 mill he can buy a fitted hat or three ... Merry Christmas to Mench and all the little Menchs ...

The 30-year-old Mench has a lifetime batting average of .269 with 89 home runs in 702 major league games. He hit .243 in 51 games for the Blue Jays in 2008.

The Seibu Lions said Monday they have acquired the services of
John Wasdin, a right-hander who has 39 major league career wins and
formerly pitched for the Yomiuri Giants.

Wasdin, 36, who went 9-6 with three saves and a 3.51 ERA for the
St. Louis Cardinals' Triple-A affiliate with no big league
appearances last season, has agreed to a one-year contract carrying a
salary of 50 million yen.

Wasdin posted a 1-4 record with a 4.54 ERA with the Giants in
2002. ''He is a fastball pitcher. He has improved his pitching
arsenal since his time with the Giants,'' said Seibu club official
Kosuke Maeda.

Wasdin is expected to bid for a spot in the 2008 Japan Series
champions' starting rotation.

Tadahito Iguchi is heading back to Japan, signing a three-year deal worth roughly $6 million with the Chiba Lotte Marines. In four years on American soil, he had three quality seasons, earned a World Series ring and may have another one coming his way if the Phillies are generous.

Nice find, Kenny. Fare thee well, Emperor.

***

Tadahito Iguchi has decided to return to Japan by signing a three-year contract with the Chiba Lotte Marines.

Iguchi put together three straight solid seasons with an OPS in the mid-700s after coming to America as a 30-year-old in 2005, but struggled last season between San Diego and Philadelphia and likely would have had to settle for a minor league deal. Instead, he'll reportedly make around $1.9 million per year in Japan. He finishes with a .268/.338/.401 hitting line in 2,078 plate appearances with the White Sox, Phillies and Padres.

The Lotte Marines said Tuesday they have signed former major
league second baseman Tadahito Iguchi to a three-year contract worth
180 million yen a year plus performance bonuses of up to 20 million
yen.

Iguchi will return to Japanese baseball after playing four
seasons in the major leagues, where he won the 2005 World Series with
the Chicago White Sox in his rookie year.

Iguchi will don the No. 6 jersey, the number worn by former
Lotte star players such as three-time Triple Crown winner Hiromitsu
Ochiai and Kiyoshi Hatsushiba.

''Lotte apparently wanted me the most among teams that gave me
offers. I'm honored to wear the great number,'' Iguchi said.

Released by the Philadelphia Phillies at the end of last season,
Iguchi received offers from several other clubs in Japan as well as
in the majors.

The 34-year-old had put top priority on continuing his major
league career but decided to join Lotte, which sees him as a future
candidate to manage the club.

''We've had good relations with Iguchi since he was playing in
Japan. I'm sure manager Bobby Valentine is pleased with our latest
signing,'' club president Ryuzo Setoyama said. ''I expect him to take
a leadership role on the team.''

Iguchi batted .268 with 44 home runs and 205 RBIs in 493 games
in four seasons with the White Sox, San Diego Padres and Phillies.

He is a .271 career hitter in Japan with 149 homers and 507 RBIs
in eight seasons, all with the Daiei Hawks -- now the Softbank Hawks.
The three-time Golden Glove award winner led the Pacific League in
stolen bases twice, with 44 in 2001 and 42 in 2003.

Justin Hampson is currently a FA. As far as I can tell, he didn't sign anywhere after being released April 1 by San Diego.

GOLD RETURNS TO HAWKS

The Texas Rangers have re-signed first baseman Nate Gold, who had been playing in Taiwan before being released. Gold had been with the RedHawks for several seasons. He batted .255 with 23 homers and 90 RBIs in 2008. Gold was fishing in Iowa when he got the call from Texas. He went 0-for-3 in his first game back.

"I always loved playing here, so it’s good to be back,” Gold said. "You never know when it’s going to happen.”

True ...

Former San Diego Padres pitcher Justin Hampson (Edwardsville, SWIC) was released by the club at the end of spring training and is trying to hook on with another team.

Oakland, Cleveland and Toronto are among those showing interest.

"It's just weird, teams have interest one day and the next day they don't," said Hampson, a 28-year-old left-handed reliever who has been working out at SWIC and Edwardsville High. "I don't have a problem with proving myself to another team. I understand it's been a month since I got released, so a team's going to want to see what I can do."

Sorry about that guys, I just figured for sure that some team signed him and had him in AAA. I mean how is a guy that's thrown 84 innings with a sub 3 ERA the past 2 years that's LEFT HANDED unemployed?

I was asking that exact same question after I went to look up his 2009 numbers today for a trade block post in my other league and realized he was without a gig, and his solid 3.60 ERA projection (good enough to be a LH SU or even a fairly effective LR guy) was useless to me. Sorry I had to spread the bummer dude (ok, only a little sorry... the whole misery/company thing is pretty spot on).

No more ... Athletics signed LHP Justin Hampson to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Sacramento.

Hampson has a 3.38 ERA in 96 career innings with the Rockies and Padres. He had a 2.93 ERA in 35 games for the Padres last season. He was given his release by the Padres in April.

Outfielder Todd Linden of the New York Yankees Triple-A affiliate has agreed to a contract with the Rakuten Eagles, according to a report in the Scranton Times.

"Once it actually got agreed upon it came together pretty quickly," the Scranton Times' online edition on Friday quoted Linden as saying of the deal. "But it's something that's been talked about quite a bit."

The 28-year-old former San Francisco Giants outfielder has a .231 batting average with eight homers in 270 major league appearances.

Primarily batting third in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees lineup, Linden has a .312 batting average with seven home runs in 60 games this season.

"I'll do every thing I can to help the team win a championship." The former Yankee [and White Sox farm hand] had a .250 batting average, 14 home runs and 79 RBI in 259 major league games.
