Milestones/Championships you've witnessed

Post by Cardinals »

Just wondering what major sporting events people here have actually seen in person.

I'll need to think about everything I've seen, but off the top of my head:

- Mark McGwire's 400th HR in Shea Stadium (if you actually watch the game you can see me on TV, was sitting right behind home plate front row)

- Roger Clemens 300th win and 4000th K (thanks to Shawn)

- Cardinals 2006 Pennant clinched

If Brady gets 5 TD's this weekend, then I'll have seen the single season TD mark shattered and the only QB to ever throw for 50 TD's in a single season. Would be neat.

I'll have to think about this some more, but off the top of my head after 5 beers at our XMas party:
- Aaron Boone Home Run
- LeBron James' first game at MSG
- Don Mattingly Day
- Last Whalers game
- Giants spoiling Broncos perfect season
- Shaq setting Magic single game scoring record

I've got more, I'll think about it on the train...

I'm sure there's more, but I was at the last game before the strike in 1994...Toronto @ NYY.

Also, I'll be at the first game at Citifield when it opens.

Oh...been to a couple of WS games.

Came within one inning of seeing a no hitter 2x.

Never get to see a major league game (only been to 2 ever).....but I see the Little League World Series each year....LOL....I live about 20 minutes away.

I was able to see an A's-Rangers game when I was younger....ended up getting an autographed ball with Steinbach, McGwire, and Canseco on it. That was very cool for a long time afterwards....hehe

Pats AFC Championship game in 2004.

20-3 Pats over the Colts.

25 degrees at kickoff. Snow was not in the forecast, but began right when we started to walk in from tailgating. The rest is history, Pats went on to be Philly for the title.

no amazing milestones but some pretty cool things in hindsight.

- Beckett 2 hits the Cubs in Game 5 of the 2003 NLCS.
- Cal Ripken's last game in South Fla.
- Luis Castillo's 35 game hit streak snapped. i believe its still the longest for a 2B and for a player not born in the US but i'm not sure.
- Dontrelle Willis MLB debut.

Can you tell where I live?

Living in the Louisville area means I've got to witness hardly anything. I've only been to 5 MLB games my entire life. I've probably been to more pro wrestling events than pro sporting events. I've seen

Reggie Miller get in a fight with Vlade Divac in 1998.
Charlie Miller blow out his knee during Midnight Madness at Bloomington in 1996
Ron Villone and Scott Sullivan(I think) combine on a 1 hitter, the only hit being a JD Drew leadoff double, in 1999.
Me singlehandedly ruin Wade Miller's career.
A fan get arrested for spraying Scott Hall and Kevin Nash with silly string in 1997

Games 40, 41, 42, and 43 of Pete Rose's 44 game hitting streak.

I'm sure there is some others, but that's the first thing that came to mind.

Barry's 300th and 400th as well as his last game
Jerry Rice's last home game in SF
One of the Antawn Jamison back to back 51 point games
The first SaberCats ArenaBowl (they hired me afterwards so that counts)
Tim Lincecum's first home start
That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

- Game 1 2004 WS in Boston (4 errors for each team, Mark Bellhorn's HR)
- Trot Nixon's 2003 ALDS Game 3 walkoff HR to straightaway center at Fenway vs. the A's
- Game 2, 2007 WS at Fenway (Schilling's legend grows - the crowd gives him a proper sendoff in what we thought was his last Fenway start as a member of the Red Sox)
- Bonds HRs 521 + 522 at PacBell (to pass Ted Williams on the all-time list)
- many David Ortiz regular season walk-off HRs (April '05 - I think - vs. KC comes to mind, as well as the GW bomb he crushed off of B.J. Ryan a few years ago)

- I think I only missed about 3 Hartford Whaler home games in 4 years of high school (92-96), so there must have been some kind of Pat Verbeek or Sean Burke milestone in there somewhere. Not to mention the times I saw Kevin Dineen (my favorite athlete of all time) and Ron Francis have special performances at the mall as a kid. Undoubtedly Jaromir Jagr must have broken some kind of records with one of the billion goals I saw him score at Hartford. Maybe a "Red Light" Racicot record for goals allowed by the Canadiens? Who knows. I might remember more of the details if I hadn't spent every day since March 26, 1997 trying to forget the NHL ever existed.

2023 GM Totals: 1780 W - 1460 L | 0.549 wpct | 89-73 (avg 162 G record)

I've been to a whole bunch of cool shit, I'm sure I'm forgetting some of it, but here goes...I've also got some great related stories, I may start a thread with them...
Baseball
Clemens 4000th K, 300th win
Reggie Jackson Day
Having a hard time remembering anything else, but I know I kept score on TV live during David Wells' perfect game and I think I may have for Cone's as well, not positive on that one.

College Basketball
2003 Final Four (ridiculous comeback by UConn vs Duke and then winning it all)
1999 Elite Eight/Sweet 16 (Phoenix, UConn reaches first Final Four by beating Iowa and Gonzaga (who was just getting good at that point))
1998 Elite Eight/Sweet 16 (Carolina, UConn beats Washington and Todd McCulloch on a Rip Hamilton buzzer beater in the lane before losing to North Carolina), met Oscar Robertson
Been to a ton of other UConn games

College Football
2004 Motor City Bowl (UConn routs Toledo in its inaugural bowl)

College Soccer
2000 College Cup (UConn wins), also sat in on Chris Gbandi being announced Hermann Trophy winner

Also caught almost every Arena Football game in Hartford I believe, at least while they were the CT Coyotes and the New England Sea Wolves.
