Sept. 18 update

Clinching Soon

The Angels need either a win or Oakland loss to clinch the AL West. It'll be Stephen's first trip to the playoffs when it does happen, barring an insane collapse. Anaheim will play Cleveland while Detroit takes on Oakland. We'll see this clinch by Tuesday.

Bren's Padres will finally get to the playoffs. San Diego's magic number is two. The Padres will take on the DBacks while the Giants take on the Rockies. We should see this clinch by Tuesday as well. It'll mark Bren's first trip to the playoffs since 2006.

Detroit's magic number is down to three. The Tigers take on the A's as aforementioned, while the Royals take on the Blue Jays. At worst, we'll see Detroit punching its ticket to the playoffs late this week.

Wild Cards -- Still Wild

The Nationals are in great shape headed into the penultimate week of the regular season. Zalaski holds a three game lead over the Cardinals and 5.5 game lead over the second Wild Card spot. The Nats open the week against the Braves, while the Reds and Cards take each other on. Look for the Nationals grab one of the two wild card spots before the end of next week.

Wild Card 2 is a bit foggier. The Cardinals entered the weekend four up in the loss over the Reds. Despite Pittsburgh taking 2-of-3 from the Reds, the Cards lost ground, as Bishop swept Aaron.

The Cardinals now hold a 3 game lead in the loss over Cincinnati headed into a pivotal series against the Reds to start the week. The Cards will head to Pittsburgh to end the week, so this is a huge week for Aaron.

Cinci and St. Louis' struggles have opened the door for the Brew Crew to get back into the race. Milwaukee is just three out and has an opportunity to gain on the Cards, but the Brewers take on the Pirates to start the week. If the Brew Crew can manage to take 2/3 from Pittsburgh, a weekend set against Chicago could set the Brewers up to have a chance next week.

Over in the AL, Ian's Royals look safe -- with a 4.5 game lead over WC2 and 3 game lead over the Orioles.

The race for WC2 in the AL has the Orioles 1.5 up on the A's and 3 up on the Yankees.

Oakland takes on Detroit and Texas this week, Baltimore takes on Boston and Tampa, while the Yankees take on the Twins and Jays.

We'll have a bit more clarity come next week, but we've got a lot of teams still vying for a playoff spot.

Losing 9 out of 10 to drop out of a WC spot as soon as Conforto went down for the year took the wind out of our sails but we're not dead yet! Yet.

Sept. 19 clinchings

Anaheim punched its ticket to the playoffs, winning the AL West crown by defeating Cleveland, 4-0 behind Dylan Bundy's complete game shutout. It's d'Esterhazy's first trip to the IBC playoffs.

San Diego clinched the NL West with a 3-2 win over Arizona in 10 innings. An Elvis Andrus error led to the walk-off clinch. It's Bren's first trip to the playoffs since 2006, and fourth overall trip to the postseason.

Sept. 21 Update

Tigers Clinch
Detroit clinched its second consecutive AL Central title, and third in four years, with a 4-3 win over the Twins on Thursday. Hanley Ramirez' eighth inning sac fly was the difference. It's Pat's fifth trip to the playoffs since returning to the league, and seventh overall. (2004 NL Central; 2005, 2012, 2014, 2016 AL Central; 2015 AL Wild Card).

Wild Cards

Less than a dozen games to go and we're still not close to clear on the wild cards.

Kansas City is clinging to a half game lead in the AL Wild Card over Baltimore, with Oakland 2.5 back.

Jag has the schedule advantage in this race, taking on Texas, Seattle and Texas to end the year.

Baltimore takes on Tampa Bay, Pittsburgh and again Tampa Bay to end the year.

KC has the toughest schedule, facing off against the White Sox, Tigers and DBacks.

In the NL, the Nationals are getting close to clinching one of the two wild cards, with a solid 5.5 game lead on Wild Card 2.

St. Louis holds a four game lead in the loss over Cincinnati, Milwaukee and San Francisco, but is coming to Pittsburgh for a three-game set.

Cincinnati takes on Boston, Milwaukee gets the Cubs and the Giants get the Dodgers. A lot will hinge on the upcoming Cards-Bucs series.

AL East?
Don't look now, but Toronto's lead is down to 3.5 in the AL East. It's not likely with so few games left in the season, but the Jays are taking on the Yankees twice and Red Sox once to end the season. Baltimore would have to go on a tear to end the year, but crazier things have happened.

Homefield
Pittsburgh clinched homefield in the National League, and will face the Wild Card winner in the NLDS.

Over in the AL, the Angels hold a half game lead over the Tigers for AL homefield.

Sept. 26 Update

It's the final week of the regular season. Toronto is ready to clinch the AL East, as the Jays' magic number has been reduced to two. At 96 wins, Toronto looks poised to be the fourth team to notch 100 wins this season, beginning the week with a series against the Red Sox.

The Phillies are ready to clinch the NL East as well, and just need either a win or Washington loss. Philadelphia takes on Washington to start the week.

The Wild Cards remain murky.

Kansas City holds a two game lead in the loss over Baltimore and Oakland, but has a difficult schedule this week. The Royals have to take on the AL's top team, Detroit, to start the week, before playing Arizona to end the season.

Baltimore has a quick two game series against Pittsburgh, but then gets to end the season against Tampa Bay.

The winner in the schedule lottery here is Oakland, who gets to take on Seattle and Texas this week.

In the National League, Washington is up three games on WC2 and 4.5 over the Reds and Brewers. Zalaski looks safe - but does have to take on Philly and Pittsburgh this week, so the Nats need to show up.

The Cardinals hold a 2 game lead in the loss over the Reds and Brewers for WC2. The Cards take on the Cubs and Brewers this week, the Reds take on the Brewers and Cubs, and the Brewers take on the Reds and Cards.

Should be a fun last week. Good luck to everybody still in the race.

Sept. 27 Update

Phillies extend NL East dominance

The Philadelphia Phillies clinched the NL East, with a 5-2 win on Monday over Washington. Max Scherzer picked up his 13th win of the year, going 8 and 1/3 innings, striking out 14 and allowing two runs. Nelson Cruz added his 46th homer, and that was enough to give Philadelphia its fourth straight division title and fifth consecutive playoff appearance.

It's Nick's sixth division title overall (2002 Angels, 2010, 2014-17 Phillies) and seventh overall playoff appearance (2013 Wild Card).

Wild Card changes
Oakland is taking advantage of a weak schedule, and now holds a half game lead for the AL's second Wild Card over Baltimore. Three teams (KC, OAK, BAL) are separated by only a game and a half.

In the NL, the Nats remain close to clinching a playoff spot, and Wild Card 2 is closer than ever. The Cardinals hold a one game lead over the Brewers and two game lead on the Reds headed into Wednesday's action.

Sept. 28 Update
Toronto clinched the AL East last night, with an 11-5 win over Boston. Blake Snell pitched six inning and improved to 8-7 with the win. Justin Smoak provided the game winning RBI and added his ninth homer of the season.

It's Toronto's second straight AL East title, and Dan's seventh consecutive playoff appearance, and eighth in the past nine years (2008-09, 2011-12 NL East Champions; 2014-15 NL Wild Card).

Oakland has moved into a tie for Wild Card 1 with Kansas City. Baltimore, after losing four in a row, is now 1.5 out of a Wild Card spot.

The Royals have a game left against the Tigers before taking on the D'Backs to end the year, while the A's get the Rangers. Baltimore takes on Tampa.

In the National League, Milwaukee won its seventh game in a row and remains a game behind St. Louis. Cincinnati needs some help, dropping to three full games behind the Cards with four to play.

If the playoffs started today:
STL/WAS @ Pittsburgh
San Diego @ Philadelphia (PHI won season series)

KC/OAK @ Detroit
Toronto @ Anaheim

Sept. 28 update ii

Washington clinched one of the two wild cards. Whether Washington will have home field or not remains to be seen, but with 69 losses and four games to play, at worst, the Nats will have 73 losses. Milwaukee currently has 73 losses, and the only path for Milwaukee is to sweep St. Louis, which would put the Cards at 74 losses and on the outside looking in.

There is no scenario in which Washington ends up in third place.

This is Washington's second trip to the playoffs. Zalaski claimed a Wild Card in 2012 as well.

October 1 Update

The playoffs are set. Oakland, Kansas City and St. Louis clinched wild card berths over the weekend, while the Pirates clinched homefield through the World Series.

Kansas City will head to Oakland for the Wild Card game, and the winner will take on the Tigers.

St. Louis heads to Washington and the winner takes on the Pirates.

The other two LDS matchups feature the Blue Jays headed to the Angels, and thanks to a tie breaker, the Phillies will host the Padres for Games 1 and 2 of the NLDS.

To expand on yesterday's clinching...

Oakland's wild card berth is Jag's first playoff appearance since 2013, when his D'Backs won the NL West and National League pennant. It's also Jag's first playoff appearance in the American League and sixth overall (2008, 2010, 2012-13 NL West; 2011 NL Wild Card).

St. Louis' Wild Card berth is the second consecutive Wild Card for Aaron's Cardinals, and sixth overall playoff appearance (2004-05, 2008, 2016 Wild Card; 2007 NL Central).

Kansas City's Wild Card is Ian's first-ever IBC playoff appearance in his first full season as an IBC general manager.

Good luck to everybody in the playoffs.

In classic does-not-make-sense DMB fashion, somehow Adeiny Hechavarria will appear in Game 7 of the world series and hit 3 home runs resulting in the Baltimore Orioles being declared Champs.
