Walter and the Draft

I see he missed his pick and I own part of the responsibility for this.
Since he was new and we added just as the draft was starting (or just before) I was sending him an e-mail when his pick was up --- just as I did with Nate one year near the end of his first tenure when he still lived in Colorado.
Turns out I was not at home and on-line very much this weekend so I did not notice he was up until late this morning when there was about 28 minutes left. I sent him an e-mail but it was too late.
Sorry.

I don't think that's your responsibility or fault at all. I sent him an email as well when his first pick nearly expired, but he needs to check the website regularly, and should know to especially during draft time. He was around enough to trade Lackey to JB, so this is definitely 100% on his shoulders.

Agreed, that's not your fault Jim. By that logic, I could be to blame for not sending email notifications when you're on the clock. GMs need to be responsible and it's concerning that our newest GM got skipped.

Missing the ExCo vote is pretty weak, too. I'm not really sure how I feel about Hickman at all right now.

He ended up skipping that pick -- and I think it way too early to draw judgement yet.

Didn't the 24 hours expire on it which is why he was skipped?

Jumping in here...I agree with JP that I've been less than impressed with Walter so far and I recommended him. He has always been very responsive and active in BCMBL, but between his first pick taking forever and latter picks taking a lot of time/getting skipped, missing the exco vote and making kind of a blah first deal, I think it's worth monitoring whether he becomes more active/engaged in the coming months.
I had a pretty lengthy conversation w/ him online on Jan. 5, getting him up to speed on features of the site and how to make transactions, etc., but haven't heard anything from him since.

He could have picked later ... he was done with the draft. We usually have a bit of patience with new owners and usually attempt to mentor them a tad. I think it is very unusual to start someone just about the time the draft is starting and we have the rare league-wide votes. Many of us who have been here for a while check the board at least daily during the off- season but not all and I think it takes a bit of time to get into a rhythm in a new league.

It's the end of May now, and I'm not sure that Hickman is a good fit for this league. Since his time here, he's...
1.) Missed a draft pick
2.) Didn't participate in the ExCo vote
3.) Failed to send in an MP for the first week+ of the year
4.) Sent not one, but two MPs as the Oakland A's... even after I told him the first one was Oakland - I guess he's the A's in the BCMBL
5.) Has been pitching DeSclafini all year, who is on the 60-day DL
6.) Has generally made pretty terrible trades
I don't think he's an asset to our league. I can forgive one or two of these things... the ExCo vote isn't that important, he doesn't know who everybody is yet. But the rest all added together? It's not good.

As much as I hate running at a deficit for GMs, I agree he has not done what was expected of him. I think he jumped in wanting to do well, but has too much going on in life with school, kid, new house. Bad timing, I think.
FWIW, my friend Ryan might be interested in running a team, but understandably doesn't want to jump into running the Twins. He was previously considered for the Marlins.

FYI: my buddy Ryan isn't interested right now as he's looking for work. Are we ready to boot Walter or what?

Yes, with Brett, Shawn, you and I on board, it seems it's time for him to go.
I will inform him tonight.

Fitting that this was his last post (and only one since May 4th):

May want to post something on the main board to let other members know and that we're working to find a replacement for both Miami and Minnesota. Any suggestions welcome.
