My Pick of Chris Shaw and Why Giving Picks Back is so Dumb

So, while sprinting off of a plane, in an effort to not hold up the draft, my next pick of Chris Shaw still appeared to be on my list...with the birthdate checking out. Of course, that birthdate turned out to be the other Chris Shaw, who, unfortunately, popped up when I put it in Baseball Prospectus.
Both Pat and Stephen were given picks back in this draft for 'clicking the wrong button'. Just like my pick of Chris Shaw, this is absolutely their fault. It's not that hard to click the right button, and, if you click the wrong button, you should absolutely be punished for it.
I am absolutely not against being punished for taking Chris Shaw. I messed up, that's on me. However, this is where the really dumb part comes in. If I had lied about the pick, and said that I clicked the wrong button, I would have got the pick back. I would have had to...Pat and Stephen got theirs back. So by being honest, I get punished for the pick in a way that Pat and Stephen weren't.
This is beyond stupid. At best, Pat and Stephen should have their picks reversed. At worst, we need to make a rule that if you screw up, you screw up. That's on you. Or we could just start lying all the time.

I'm with you.. To an extent. Accidents happen, sometimes beyond our control. There's some grey area here. I think we should be forgiving. But I also conceed your point, you could have said you pulled a d'E and gotten it fixed.
What always bothered me most, and it hasn't happened this year to my knowledge, is when someone misses their 24 hour window to pick. That's an ultimate sin IMO, and we've always let them make up the pick immediately. That always been bunk to me. If you missed your pick, you shouldn't get it back.

You should get your pick back if you make a mistake as long as it's not an (oh, I didn't see this other guy when I made my pick) and also if you're window runs out - you should be able to pick at any time later with the penalty that other teams will continue to pick until you get to it and you come off as a dick for holding up the draft.
This is a hobby (granted, one we all invest in heavily). I have no idea why Brett wouldn't/shouldn't be able to replace his Shaw pick.

With John here. Our technology has become to advanced for us (thanks Shawn). Everyone knows who he was trying to draft, it's no different from Stephen, both were honest mistakes.

He should be able to repick, but the difficulty is the mistake wasn't noticed until a dozen or so picks were made and the request made this morning came after another bunch of picks passed. So the only reasonable remedy now is to delete the Shaw pick and make the next one.

I offered to make back my pick and exclude anyone who was drafted after me. I submitted a pick of Staumont with Nix. I never heard back.

Yes - the penalty is that guys drafted after the pick but before a replacement was submitted are ineligible. Seems more than fair.

Penalty for missing a pick should be missing the pick. Period. Your "make up" pick can come at the end of the draft. You don't make a pick, you lose it.

If I had to guess I'd say our first 24 hour skip is on the way.

We're all pretty busy people. I think we should be understanding and help each other out when it seems appropriate. If you screw up a pick and the guy you intended to take is still on the board, I'm ok with fixing the problem for that person.
As for the 24 hour limit, it would really suck for a rebuilding team to lose an early round pick due to unforeseen circumstances and not be able to make it up. Maybe we give them the opportunity to make up that pick at the end of that round (ie sandwich pick)?

Due to the fact that I only have a work phone for personal use - I cannot always access message boards from it - so I can sympathize with someone that cannot get to an actual 'computer' for 24 hours and has a queue that ran down. I know it's not a perfect example - but I don't think that many GM's in this league would be willfully negligent in holding up the draft. Obviously if the same GM is guilty more than one time, it's a much broader discussion regarding that GM's participation level.

I could get on board with the sandwich round idea. Seems a good compromise. But to allow immediate pick after missing is not a penalty, unless it's really early in the draft. The likelihood of your player still being there after you miss it are good beyond the top half of round 1, I would imagine.

It used to be that if you missed your pick, you could pick later with the understanding that you only had the available folks to pick from. When did this change.
I'm with Z in the Chris Shaw issue. Which is a good way to make sure it doesn't ever come about.

I favor being allowed to make up the pick at the end of the current round (first offense only) in the instance of 1) letting your 24 hours expire AND 2) if you make this kind of mistake and don't catch it and note it yourself in the draft discussion thread before the next pick is made.
It hurts guys picking at the top of rounds more than guys picking at the bottom of rounds but it can be practically and consistently applied, and it's not overly punitive.

Did you just do it again, Z? Is that the same Jose Fernandez that Ken picked at number 40?

Wiki has the 5/27 dob and BRef has the 4/27 dob but this still shouldn't have happened.

Yeah, once anybody adds a player to their queue, the player gets added into the system. I just tested it out with myself. Don't think I'm giving up my flag football career for a chance to play baseball, so don't draft me.

So will it be Stephen or Z that drafts JP?

Looks like there are 2 JP's in the system, they can both get one.

ExCo decided to give the Nationals pick 151 as a result of this fiasco.
