Draft Discussion
Draft Discussion
For anyone who wants to discuss the ongoing draft.
I hadn't expected Gudim to go for Rod on, guess I should have tried dealing up the one slot. At least there's no chance of Schwarber ending up at 3b.

I was looking for two impact players to add to my roster. Went with Tomas, who may not have as much raw power as Abreu, but is close. Has a classic right field profile.
Outside of Rodon, I think Hoffman has the best combined stuff and polish in the draft.
Another Cuban, Moncada would have been a big consideration for both these picks, however did not figure he was eligible since he hasn't signed and it looked like the rule was finally updated on the Rules page.
After clarification on Moncada eligibility, picked Moncada at #3.
High upside young Cuban who profiles as a franchise type player and high upside polished college pitcher (though delayed a year by TJ). Adds more young high end talent to my roster.

So last year players like Tanaka and Despaigne who hadn't signed anywhere by draft day were eligible to be drafted.
I thought the same rule was in place last year as well, but we have "always made exceptions" so long as those players were signed by opening day.
Can we once again, get some clarification on this? Is Moncada eligible?
Were the "rules" actually updated? I'm skeptical.

The rule should read:
VIII.1.B. Players subject to the draft will include any amateur player who has been signed by an MLB organization during the prior calendar year. (EXAMPLE: If a player was signed to a contract during 2006 but had not been signed to a contract prior to 2006 then he is eligible for the IBC 2006 draft, which is held in January 2007). Cubans and professional players from Japan, Korea and Mexico not affiliated with an MLB organization prior to the previous calendar year (2006 for the IBC 2006 draft) are eligible to be drafted. If the player does not officially sign with an MLB organization by the day before the start of the regular season (2007 in this example), his rights will be forfeited and he will be eligible for the next (IBC 2007) draft.
and I'm not sure why it doesn't on the rules page.

I was operating under this.....
VIII. Drafts
1. Annual Rookie Draft
A. Prior to the start of each season a universal new player draft will
be held. The order will be determined by the records of the teams from
the previous season with the worst team picking first. Teams that made
the playoffs will pick last in order of round of elimination. Ties
will be broken by Pythagorean winning percentage, head to head record
and then finally record in the last ten days of the season.
B. Players subject to the draft will include any player who has been signed
by an MLB organization during the prior calendar year. (EXAMPLE: If a
player was signed to a contract during 2006 but had not been signed to a
contract prior to 2006 then he is eligible for the IBC 2006 draft, which is
held in January 2007).
ExCo said they were going to update it after the Tanaka last minute issue when they made the exception and the rule looked pretty clear now.

The rule at the time of ExCo's vote last year was that Korean, Cuban, Mexican (professional) league players were eligible to be drafted provided they signed by Opening Day. We voted to change that to make everybody abide by 12/31, but it landed at 3-3, and that's not enough to change a rule. Again, I thought we made an announcement regarding it, but we didn't, and I don't know why the rules page was not updated.
Like I said via PM, if you want to change your pick, let me know and we'll halt the draft for a moment and get everything squared away. We're only 14 hours into it.

Several years ago I drafted Grandal over Harvey to avoid Mets bias. So there was that.
Dom Smith will be fine. He played in a notorious pitchers park and still has a sweet swing.
Conforto was considered, but I actually had another OF ranked higher.
Nola was a last minute switch due to the fact that I can probably trade him to Nick after he debuts in the majors this year.
..if you want to the draft to go faster stop starting it on a holiday / holiday weekend.

Personally, I switched my pick at least 5 times - while I was on the clock - between Conforto, Turner, Finnegan, another OF, and finally Nola. The queue works when you have a clear cut list. A pick in the top 15 isn't always clear cut. I also was at lake house since Wednesday and never considered that there wouldn't be wifi there (I mean, this is 2015). If my queue was set, it wouldn't have been Nola.
