Grading My Trading

Post by Yankees »

I'm on a bus from Minneapolis to Madison, so I'm humoring myself here...but I'd love to get some dialogue going in this league.

In true World Cup fashion, I’m going to judge my trades by win, loss, or draw based on the value of the deal today.

Nationals trades Matt Lindstrom, Michael Morse, to Tigers for Lucas Duda, Avisail 0-Garcia,
- Draw. Morse is having a heck of a season, but Duda & Garcia have both proven legit. Unfortunately none is doing anything for either of us. 0-0-1

Nationals trades Jason Grilli, Scott Hairston, Jeff Keppinger, Doug Fister, to Brewers for Jeremy Horst, Bradley Boxberger, Joe 11-Panik, Sean 11-Gilmartin, - Loss. A big, big loss. Not my best work. 0-1-1

Braves trades Sonny 11-Gray, Seon Gi 0-Kim, to Nationals for Xavier Paul, Brad Ziegler, - Win. Big, big win. 1-1-1

Nationals trades Carlos Beltran, Matt Cain, Alberto Callaspo, Chris Davis, Austin 11-Wood, to Royals for Scott Baker, Tyler Thornburg, James 10-Paxton, Matt 11-Skole, Alen 0-Hanson, Nick 11-Tropeano, David 12-Dahl, - Loss. It’s a tie if Baker counts as Franco/Marisnick, but it’s a loss just looking at the deal. 1-2-1

Nationals trades Hiroki Kuroda, to RedSox for Mike 10-Kickham, Rafael 12-De Paula, - Draw. Kuroda continues to pitch beyond his age, but both Kickham and De Paula remain very viable pitching prospects…De Paula to my dismay. 1-2-2

Yankees trades Chris Carter, to Nationals for Kevin Youkilis, - Win. Youkilis isn’t playing anymore, but I still should have waited until his SIM came out on this deal. 2-2-2

Nationals trades R.A. Dickey, Chris Young, Pedro Ciriaco, A.J. Ellis, to Rockies for Derek Norris, Ethan 0-Martin, Matt 11-Purke, Stryker 12-Trahan, - Loss. I thought this was a no brainer long-term win, but both Purke and Trahan have lost prospect status. Norris and Martin hold good value, but not as much as the top 3. 2-3-2

Reds trades Cody 10-Buckel, Michael Choice, Max 12-Fried, to Nationals for Brett Gardner, Boone Logan, Buzz Oliver, Craig Kimbrel,
- Loss. Thanks a lot Cody Buckel’s control. 2-4-2

RedSox trades Slade Heathcott, Jorge 9-Bonifacio, to Nationals for Mike Napoli, Tony Watson, - Draw. While Napoli continues to be productive at the end of his career, both Heathcott and Bonifacio remain legit prospects. 2-4-3

Nationals trades Bartolo Colon, Rafael Furcal, to Rockies for Roger Kieschnick, - Loss. Not as much as one might think, as Kieschnick has had a little resurgence this year, but a loss none the less. 2-5-3

Phillies trades Jake 9-Marisnick, Maikel 10-Franco, to Nationals for Scott Baker, J.J. Hoover, - Win. Can this win count as 2? No? Ok. 3-5-3

Giants trades Adeiny Hechevarria, Jake Arrieta, to Nationals for Travis Snider, Steven 0-Souza,
- Win. Though Souza retains some prospect status, Snider is a 5th of, and both Hechevarria and Arrieta grow value. 4-5-3

WhiteSox trades Michael Kirkman, Neil Ramirez, Eury Perez, Kyle McPherson, to Nationals for Chris Carter, James McDonald, Sean 11-Gilmartin, - Draw. Ugh, this trade makes me feel dirty from mediocrity. 4-5-4

Pirates trades Stefen 10-Romero, to Nationals for Bradley Boxberger, - Draw. Not much to see here. 4-5-5

Nationals trades Lucas Duda, Kyle McPherson, to Mets for Mike Leake, Mitch 12-Nay, - Win. Though Duda remains productive, Leake is a legit MLB mid-rotation starter and Nay is cementing his prospect status. 5-5-5

Nationals trades Michael Choice, Mason 12-Melotakis, to Tigers for Domingo Santana, Miles Head, - Draw. While Head’s starting to hit again might push this over the top, the value will come down to Choice vs. Santana, and that’s too early to tell. 5-5-6

Nationals trades Mike Leake, Corey 12-Black, to Reds for J.R. Graham, - Loss. Ouch. 5-6-6

Nationals trades James Paxton, to Mariners for Dorssys 11-Paulino, - Loss. I panicked. 5-7-6

Nationals trades Jeremy Horst, Charles Cutler, Mike ONeill, to Royals for Jed Bradley, Niko 10-Goodrum,
- Win. Both Bradley & Goodrum have boosted their prospect status, with minimal value on the first three. 6-7-6

Nationals trades Jake Marisnick, Adeiny Hechavarria, to Yankees for Austin Romine, Justin Grimm, Tyler 12-Naquin, - Loss. This was really stupid. 6-8-6

Nationals trades Nationals Draft Pick 1, to Mariners for Addison 12-Russell, - Win. Barely, but I’ll take Russell over Gray any day of the week. 7-8-6

Yankees trades Jose Vicente 9-Campos, to Nationals for Nationals Draft Pick 2, - Loss. Just stupid. 7-9-6

WhiteSox trades Oswaldo Arcia, to Nationals for Justin Grimm, Dorssys 11-Paulino, Brandon 10-Drury, Tyler 12-Naquin, - Draw. Arcia has moments where he looks like an All-Star and moments where he might flame out, but he’s still young. Drury & Naquin look like prospects, Paulino has been moved to an outfield corner which looks like an odd move. 7-9-7

Nationals trades Henry 12-Urrutia, Matt 11-Stites, to Cubs for Jeff Locke, Robbie Grossman, - Draw. Moving on. 7-9-8

Nationals trades Chris Withrow, Oswaldo Arcia, Avisail Garcia, Sonny 11-Gray, to Giants for Wilson Ramos, Vincent 10-Velasquez, Tigers Draft Pick 1, Giants Draft Pick 1, - Loss. Why didn’t someone tackle me on this one? 7-10-8

Nationals trades Tigers Draft Pick 1, Nationals Draft Pick 4, to Angels for Grant Green, Tigers Draft Pick 4, Pirates Draft Pick 1, - Draw. Green keeps hitting wherever the put him. 7-10-9

Reds trades Drew Hutchison, Reds Draft Pick 4, to Nationals for Joe Panik, Nationals Draft Pick 5, - Win. It’s a win right now with Hutchison throwing very well, but Panik has regained some prospect shine. 8-10-9

Angels trades Aaron 10-Sanchez, Tigers Draft Pick 2, Nationals Draft Pick 4, to Nationals for Jeff Locke, Stryker 12-Trahan, Giants Draft Pick 1, - Win. I’m calling it a win. None of Locke, Trahan, or Meadows is the prospect Sanchez is right now…however this one might result in an L down the line. 9-10-9

Padres trades Will Middlebrooks, Padres Draft Pick 4, to Nationals for Jorge 9-Bonifacio, Pirates Draft Pick 1, - Draw. Too early to tell on the deal, but will probably end up as a loss. 9-10-10

Nationals trades Wilson Ramos, Nationals Draft Pick 3, to Marlins for
Andrew 11-Susac, Arismendy 0-Alcantara,
- Win. Very solid trade for me. 10-10-10

Nationals trades Jake Arrieta, Derek Norris, Tigers Draft Pick 4, to Giants for Lewis 12-Brinson, Giants Draft Pick 4, Segio 12-Alcantara, - Loss. What felt so good at the time looks particularly dumb right now. While both Alcantara and Brinson have elevated their status’, Arrieta and Norris are having terrific seasons. 10-11-10

Nationals trades Will Middlebrooks, Grant Green, to Braves for Austin 11-Hedges, - Win. However I was way off on how good Middlebrooks was going to be. 11-11-10

Yankees trades Jose 0-Ramirez, Amed 12-Rosario, to Nationals for Rafael 12-De Paula, Darnell 12-Sweeney,
- Draw. Ramirez and Rosario have retained legit status, but both De Paula and Sweeney look solid, too. 11-11-11

Nationals trades Robbie Grossman, Tyler Thornburg, Alen 0-Hanson, to Phillies for Kyle Drabek, Edwin Escobar, - Draw. Still a lot of questions about this whole group. 11-11-12

Nationals trades Clayton Blackburn, Tigers Draft Pick 2, Kevin 0-Kiermaier, to Reds for Patrick 12-Wisdom, Johnathan 12-Williamson, - Loss. Injury to Mac and Kiermaier’s continued productivity hurt this one on my end. 11-12-12

Athletics trades Natanael 12-Delgado, to Nationals for Ethan Martin, - Draw. Martin looks the part of a big-time reliever, but Delgado is still a strong younger prospect. 11-12-13

Rangers trades Victor 12-Gonzalez, to Nationals for Francisco Cervelli, - Win. Even though I released Victor Gonzalez, he still has real potential. Cervelli looks cooked without steroids. 12-12-13

Nationals trades Michael Kickham, to Astros for Alexander 12-Palma,
- Loss. Kickham looks like a legit back-end starter, and Palma’s like a decade away. 12-13-13

Mariners trades Thairo 12-Estrada, to Nationals for Kennys 0-Vargas, - Loss. This one is particularly painful. Vargas can hit, I dropped Estrada…and then Ropers picked him up. 12-14-13

Nationals trades Amed 12-Rosario, to WhiteSox for Alberto 11-Tirado, - Draw. Too early to tell. 12-14-14

Reds trades Angels Draft Pick 3, to Nationals for Nationals Draft Pick 4, Dean 0-Anna, - Win. This was done to help me get J.D. Martinez, that has to be factored in. 13-14-14

Nationals trades Nick 11-Tropeano, Chris Rusin, Reds Draft Pick 4, to Pirates for Stephen Lombardozzi, Teoscar 11-Hernandez, Cardinals Draft Pick 5, - Draw. Very real value from Tropeano these days, but both Lombardozzi and Hernandez are no slouches. 13-14-15

BlueJays trades J.D. Martinez, to Nationals for Ivan 11-Pineyro, Angels Draft Pick 3,
- Win. This one looks solid. 14-14-15

Yankees trades Allen Webster, Franklin 12-Barreto, Yankees Draft Pick 1, to Nationals for Maikel 10-Franco, - Win. All of Webster, Barreto, and McGuire are doing better than Franco…but there’s still a lot of time on this one. 15-14-15

Nationals trades Kyle Drabek, Lewis 12-Brinson, Jose 0-Ramirez, to Mets for Josh 11-Bell,
- Win. As decent as all the first three are going, Bell is a monster. 16-14-15

Tigers trades Daniel Hudson, to Nationals for Neil Ramirez, Matt 11-Purke,
- Draw. The value on this appears it will tie itself up in Hudson’s return and Ramirez’ relieving skills. That’s not sexy. 16-14-16

Nationals trades Drew Hutchison, Patrick 12-Wisdom, Padres Draft Pick 4, to Rays for Rays Draft Pick 1, - Draw. Renfroe is on fire in the prospect world right now and Hutchison is making a good comeback. Good deal all around. 16-14-17

Nationals trades 2013 Draft Pick 126, Alex 0-Claudio, to Astros for 2013 Draft Pick 83, - Draw. Whatever. 16-14-18

Nationals trades Austin 11-Hedges, Hunter 13-Renfroe, to Yankees for Albert 12-Almora, Jake 13-Johansen, - Loss. Almora’s struggles don’t mean his lost his prospect status by a longshot, they just mean I lost this deal right now. I would do this trade again. 16-15-17

Athletics trades Daniel 11-Vogelbach, Zach 12-Eflin, Felix 11-Jorge, to Nationals for Stetson 10-Allie, Edwin Escobar, Natanael 12-Delgado, - Win. With Vogelbach coming strongly into form and Eflin pitching well, this deal is a win at the moment…but another one that’s a long way from resolution. 17-15-17

Tigers trades Carter Capps, Nick Ahmed, to Nationals for Alexander 12-Palma, Teoscar 11-Hernandez,
- Win. Even with Hernandez’ prospect status on the rise and Capps’ injury, Capps looks every bit the closer candidate, and Ahmed is having a hell of a year in AAA. 18-15-17

Nationals trades Arismendy 0-Alcantara, Max 12-Fried, to Royals for Ivan Nova, Jose 12-Berrios, Jesse 12-Winker, Ian 13-Clarkin, - Win. Whenever Fried decides to pitch may change the dynamics of this deal, but even with Nova’s injury, all of Berrios, Winker, and Clarkin are blowing up. My streak is about to end. 19-15-17

Nationals trades Victor 12-Gonzalez, Sergio 12-Alcantara, Miguel 11-Castro, to Brewers for Sean Rodriguez, - Loss. #FreeSeanRodriguez. 19-16-17

Astros trades Michael Kickham, Tyler Austin, to Nationals for Jesse 12-Winker, - Loss. Winker is a beast with the bat, but I still like the long-term value of both Kickham (doing pretty well in AAA) and Austin (rounding into form after injury in AA). 19-17-17

Nationals trades Zach 12-Eflin, to Reds for Josh Johnson,
- Draw. Way too early to tell on this one. 19-17-18

Nationals trades Vincent 10-Velasquez, Josh 11-Bell, to Cardinals for Kevin 12-Plawecki, Lucas 12-Sims, - Loss. Still so soon after, but I will probably live to regret dealing Josh Bell…as good as I think Sims will be. 19-18-18

Nationals trades Matt Wisler, Reese 13-McGuire, to Giants for Scott Kazmir, Delino DeShields, Rio 12-Ruiz,
- Win. It’s a win right now considering Kazmir keeps rocking ace performances, DeShields is coming back at AA, and Ruiz keeps hitting, while McGuire looks to find his stroke and Wisler looks to find his rhythm at AAA. However this trade will not be judged in the annals of history until I deal Kazmir. 20-18-18

Nationals trades Allen Webster, Jed 0-Bradley, Evan 0-Marshall, to Indians for Tommy la Stella, Ryan Rua, - Draw. I think both teams got exactly what they were looking for with good value, but no game-changers on both sides. 20-18-19

Thoughts/comments/disagreements? Would love to debate this a little, especially with my trade partners.

Man you killed me on that trade. At the time I thought of Franco as a throw in. Hoover did land me Ervin Santana who helped me get Cespedes. But yea, wish I had that one back.

It's worth noting that we totally undid the Delgado/Martin trade since I got Delgado back from you and then cut Martin (who you resigned) because of my crowded pen
