Marlins Prospect Notes

May 31

Wil Myers, OF (AAA) - .270/.351/.469
...Myers is heating up at Durham, posting a .341/.354/.773 line over his last 10 games with an expected June call-up looming.

Wilmer Flores, 2B/3B (AAA) - .292/.335/.470
...Despite once again being one of the youngest players in his league at 21, Flores just keeps on hitting, flexing one of the hottest bats in the PCL over the last 10 days to the tune of a .381/.381/.595 slash line.

George Springer, CF (AA) - .296/.407/.613
...The jump up to AA Corpus Christi hasn't slowed Springer down one bit from the blistering pace he set in 2012. Springer has 16 SB to go with his Texas League-leading 16 HR to date.

Yasiel Puig, OF (AA) - .322/.393/.615
...Puig's rare tools continue to turn heads in the AA Southern League, where his .379/.444/.759 over the last 10 games is making the Dodgers look smarter and smarter for gambling millions on his relatively unknown talent.

June 2

Jarred Cosart, RHP (AAA) - 2.65 ERA/ 1.27 WHIP
...Cosart has picked up where he left off in 2012, when he finished the season with a strong PCL debut followed by an appearance in the AFL's Rising Stars Game. Through 82.0 IP at AAA, Cosart has K'd 81 while allowing just 66 hits and generating twice as many GB as FB.

Johnny Hellweg, RHP (AAA) - 3.65 ERA/ 1.39 WHIP
...In his first five PCL starts, the 6'9" Hellweg did little to show his big arm was ready for the major leagues. However, the big righthander seems to be making progress of late, allowing just 1 ER in each of his last 2 outings, while striking out 10 over 13.0 IP and inducing a healthy number of grounders.

Danny Salazar, RHP (AAA) - 2.51 ERA/ 1.09 WHIP
...After dominating the AA EL to start the season, Salazar earned a May callup to the AAA IL where he has hit the ground running. With 64 Ks and just 16 BB through 46.2 IP, Salazar is off to one of the hottest starts in the minors and hopes to ride his electric fastball to a late-season callup.

Marlins youngsters appearing on BA League Top 20 Lists so far...

Arizona League (Rookie)

16. Samir Duenez, 1B
"... Making his pro debut just after turning 17, the lefthanded hitter impressed league observers with his excellent hand-eye coordination and ability to use the whole field. He has good bat speed and a feel for hitting."

Appalachian League (Rookie)

7. Alex Reyes, RHP
"... has projectable build, long arms and athleticism. His quick arm generates fastballs that sit 92-95 mph and touch 97 with good downhill angle from a high three-quarters slot. His curveball shows two-plane break and abrupt tilt and was one of the best in the league, and his ability to command it drew plaudits from managers. His solid-average changeup has a chance to be plus."

South Atlantic League (A)

1. Eddie Butler, RHP
"... In nine starts before he was promoted to high Class A Modesto, Butler gave up one hit four different times. He didn’t give up a run in more than half his starts. He did it by dominating hitters with a plus-plus fastball (94-97 mph), good fastball life, a potentially plus breaking ball and an average changeup."

California League (Adv A)

2. Eddie Butler, RHP
"... Butler left the Cal League in his wake after just 13 starts, proving too advanced for high Class A hitters to handle. At his best, Butler features four major league pitches, none of which are straight, and he throws them without much effort. His best offering is an electric fastball that explodes out of his hand with running action."

Southern League (AA)

1. Yasiel Puig, OF
"... 'I like everything about him,' said one scout with a National League club. 'He’s the total package. His abilities are unlike anyone I’ve seen in person'."

9. Arismendy Alcantara, 2B/SS
"... The switch-hitting Alcantara hits for more power from the left side but makes use of a slashing approach with a short stroke from both sides of the plate. He ranked second in the SL with 36 doubles and 55 extra-base hits, showing a good blend of gap power and plus speed required to carry over those long hits to the big leagues."

Texas League (AA)

1. George Springer, OF
"... Springer’s tool set evoked some of the league’s recent elite center fielders such as [Oscar] Taveras or Mike Trout. His ability to hit for both power and average excited scouts and managers, who see such a remarkable athlete that his high number of strikeouts weren’t overly concerning, as he’s more than willing to take ball four."

8. Jason Adam, RHP
"... winning eight of his final 12 decisions. His heavy fastball sat consistently 92-95 mph as he proved not to be predictable in fastball counts, eventually mixing in a biting, high-70s curveball that profiles as a plus pitch."

14. Chad Bettis, RHP
"... One opposing TL manager viewed Bettis as being a good competitor who really wanted the ball. His shoulder injury did little to diminish his stuff. Bettis sits in the 93 mph range with his fastball and commands it well enough to still profile as a mid-rotation starter."

More Marlins prospects showing up in BA league top 20s...

International League (AAA)

2. Wil Myers, OF
"... Myers left his mark in Durham with his lethal power. His plus bat speed and the ability to turn on inner-half velocity helped him launch 14 homers with the Bulls, including several monster shots off the facing of the building well beyond the left-field wall at Durham Bulls Athletic Park."

6. Danny Salazar, RHP
"... Salazar logged a career-high 93 innings this season between Columbus and Double-A Akron, and he commanded the ball better than ever. A power pitcher, he sits at 94-98 mph and has hit 100. His mid- to high-80s slider is a good secondary pitch against lefties and righties."

Pacific Coast League (AAA)

3. George Springer, OF
"... 'As far as impact players in the league, I haven’t seen anybody like him since Matt Kemp,' Albuquerque manager Lorenzo Bundy said. 'He could play for me in the majors. He’s the type of player that can affect the game offensively, defensively. He can steal a base. Pretty impressive'."

11. Jarred Cosart, RHP
"... Cosart set a career high by making 27 starts and 28 appearances between Triple-A and the majors. His fastball gets into the mid-90s, sitting at 93-96 mph, and he keeps the ball down, making him difficult to elevate. He throws his curveball with power in the upper 70s and it remains an above-average pitch."

15. Wilmer Flores, 1B/2B/3B
"... Flores played most of the season as a 21-year-old... impressed managers with strong bat control and improving power (he tied for the league lead in slugging percentage)... When he gets a pitch he can handle [] he has shown the ability to drive it to all fields."

More Marlins prospects showing up on postseason prospect lists...

BA 2014 Mets Top 10 Prospects

6. Wilmer Flores, 2B/1B
"... Flores began turning on the inside pitch for home run power in 2012, though his natural power stroke carries the ball to right-center field... he has impressive bat control and the hand-eye coordination to hit different pitch types to all fields... his minor league track record suggests he will hit for at least average power."

BA 2014 Brewers Top 10 Prospects

4. Johnny Hellweg, RHP
"... At 6-foot-9, Hellweg can’t help but throw on a downhill plane. When he’s pounding the lower half of the zone with fastballs in the 92-95 mph range, he induces one groundball out after another. He’s capable of reaching 98 mph whenever he wants... He has such good movement on his fastball that hitters don’t square him up much... With a 70-grade fastball, he’s worth waiting on."

BA 2014 Cardinals Top 10 Prospects

7. Alex Reyes, RHP
"... Reyes is the raw clay that the Cardinals covet. He has two plus pitches and a third in development, scouts say. He starts with a fastball at 92-95 mph that will consistently hit 97. His frame and long arms project power, and he has a sharp plane to his fastball as it cuts through the strike zone... Reyes shined as the top righthander in the Rookie-level Appalachian League, striking out 27 percent of batters faced."

BA 2014 Rockies Top 10 Prospects

2. Eddie Butler, RHP
"... He began 2013 at low Class A Asheville but worked his way through three levels and finishing 9-5, 1.80 overall, ranking second in the minors in ERA and opponent average (.180). Butler’s fastball, slider and changeup are plus pitches with exceptional movement... He touches 99 mph with a fastball that sits at 95-96. With its life and his ability to spot it, Butler earns 70 grades or higher from scouts for his heater. His changeup is extraordinary... Butler could be in the Rockies rotation by May"

5. Chad Bettis, RHP
"... Before his shoulder injury, Bettis reached 97-98 mph with his fastball. Last season, he hit 96 and pitched at 92-93. The Rockies hope he’ll regain velocity as he gains more distance from his injury. Bettis’ vastly improved changeup is a plus pitch with some sink and serves as his best secondary pitch."

BP Royals Top 10 Prospects

9. Jason Adam, RHP
"... Slow and steady, Adam moved up to the Double-A level, made 26 starts, logged 144 innings, took developmental steps forward that didn’t show up on the stat sheet... Big, durable frame; arm works well; gets great extension; fastball can work 90-95; good sink; pitches off the fastball; curveball flashes plus; upper-70s with tight rotation and depth; changeup will play above average at times; good sink; pitchability."

BP Blue Jays Top 10 Prospects

10. Jairo Labourt, LHP
"... Big frame; long legs; arm works well; fastball can sit 89-93; touches a little higher; projects to throw harder; slider has wipeout potential; mid-80s velocity and sharp slice; good pitchability... My sources absolutely love this arm, saying he has the potential to have three plus pitches to go along with good feel for craft."
