Feels fun to write in this section consistently again!

Corbin Burnes, SP, Milwaukee Brewers (Double-A Biloxi)

The Brewers’ starting rotation has been much better than expected and, arguably, the biggest reason why they’re sitting atop the NL Central with a 41-37 record. But while their five starters are healthy and performing well at the moment, the team’s rotation depth has taken a hit as of late. Top prospect Josh Hader was moved to a relief role in order to balance out a right-handed heavy bullpen, and Brandon Woodruff landed on the disabled list when he suffered a strained hamstring just before his MLB debut. All of a sudden, Burnes is not only rocketing up the prospect lists with his impressive performance in 2017, he could actually help a playoff-contending Brewers team at some point.

A fourth-round pick in last year’s draft, Burnes posted a 1.05 ERA in 10 High-A starts before a June promotion to Double-A. The 22-year-old right-hander hasn’t slowed down one bit, allowing two earned runs and 10 hits over 23 2/3innings in his four Southern League starts. He threw close to 140 innings in 2016 between the NCAA and the Minor Leagues, so it’s realistic that he can exceed 150 innings this year–he’s currently at 83 2/3–and that some of those innings might actually be thrown at the Major League level.

He's so good...

Garrett Hampson, SS, Colorado Rockies (High-A, Lancaster): 2-4, 2 R, HR, RBI, SB
With Brendan Rodgers out of High-A, Hampson will get the everyday reps now in Lancaster. A 4th-rounder in 2016, Hampson is a plus runner, who can stick at short, and can be an above-average hitter.

Had a chance to see this guy pitch last year, and have been very big on him ever since...so pumped at the rebound he's making from the injury. He's now at 1.48 era and 1.03 whip.

Jordan Stephens, RHP, Chicago White Sox (Double-A Birmingham): 7.2 IP, ER, 5 H, 4 K, HRA
It’s easy to lose track of Stephens in Chicago’s system (even easier today’n it was the day before yesterday, I reckon). But after losing the first two months to an ominous forearm strain he’s come back no worse for the wear, coaxing a bunch of grounders and posting strong ratios and yielding no more than two runs in any of his first seven starts. Durability questions are well-founded, but he’s got a nice four-pitch mix and an idea of how to make each of those pitches go where he wants it to.

Another call-up!

Fangraphs loved Mark Karaviotis heading into 2017, and he hasn't disappointed. After going .307/.398/.411 at Kane County, he was promoted to Visalia where he's off to a hot start (.400/.438/.667). Kid can pick it and he can hit it. Excited to see where he goes...

Another promotion!

Akil Baddoo got bumped up from the GCL to the APPY based off a strong start where he put all his tools on display. He's doing just as well in the APPY, and if this kid can put it all together, he'll be really special.

Also, Garrett Hampson popped a 4-hit night on Tuesday, and now sits at .312/.374/.429, while playing a plus SS, having 31 ebh's, and stealing 34 bases in 41 attempts.

Cody Thomas, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers (Low-A Great Lakes): 3-5, 3 R, 3 HR, 7 RBI, K

Thomas played very little actual baseball as an amateur, with the lion’s share of his athletic attention spent on backup quarterbacking the Oklahoma Sooners. He turned heads in his Pioneer League debut last year, though, with raw tools and athleticism aplenty. The realities of professional baseball have beset upon him a bit this year in full-season, but yesterday’s outburst wasn’t particularly out of line for a plus-powered masher. It’s a long term project, but you know what they say…never bet against an elite athlete.

Garrett Hampson, 2B/SS, Colorado Rockies (High-A Lancaster): 3-5, R, K, SB
Hampson has positively worn out Cal League pitching this year, including a .388/.423/.612 run in August. Yes, there’s some Lancaster Effect involved, but the bat-to-ball is legitimately good, the speed (and the utility thereof) is legitimately excellent, and he projects to create additional value at the keystone. He’s on the short list of players most overdue for a promotion at this point.

Quick end of MiLB season update on my prospects:

Sam Hilliard - ended season on fire, .300/.360/.487 with 21 hr's & 37 sb's at HA
Austin Riley - ended season on fire, .275/.339/.446 at HA/AA including .315/.389/.511 in 200 pa's at AA at 20 years old
Garrett Hampson - ended season on fire, .326/.387/.462 at HA, 44 ebh's & 51 sb's for a legit SS
Mark Karaviotis - .289/.379/.419 at A/HA, ended year with a thud, but still respectable numbers for a legit SS
Will Smith - got jiggy with a .231/.358/.446 as a legit C in HA/AA, showed the 1st round talent
Max Kranick - missed most of the year before gaining a promotion after only 2 starts, 1.11 era with 1.15 whip in GCL/Appy
Austin Sodders - 11-5, 1.81 era at A/HA with a 0.96 whip, fun pop-up prospect
Cody Thomas - .702 ops at A...but with 20 hr's. Still has huge raw and plays a great COF, but needs to make contact.
Tyler Wells - 5-5, 3.03 era, 1.12 whip at GCL/A, good K #'s at both
Jordan Stephens - 3-7, 3.14 era, 1.30 whip at AA after starting year on DL, definitely tired, but established prospect status
Kyle Farmer - made MLB this year, .317/.375/.476 at AA/AAA, establishing self as a legit C option
Wilmer Font - got lit up at MLB in 2 relief appearances, but 10-8 with 3.42 era, 1.11 whip, and insane K rates at AAA as starter
Ryder Jones - tough/inconsistent start to MLB, but crushed AAA to tune of .312/.396/.574 this year
Felix Jorge - up & mostly down start to MLB career, but consistent lefty went 10-4, 3.68 era, 1.35 whip at AA/AAA at 23
Kyle McGrath - started year on DL, but raced through AA/AAA (2.43 era) all the way to good start to MLB career

Austin Riley, 3B, Atlanta Braves
Under a different set of circumstances or maybe in a different system, Riley might be more highly regarded. Drafted out of high school as a toolsy project, Riley has moved all the way to Double-A in just his second full pro season. The question marks about his defense and his K rate both seem to be clearing up somewhat as he gains experience. He is now at least average defensively and shows softer hands and smoother actions than he did when first drafted. The easy plus raw power is still there and he is making adjustments to get to it more often in games. As a 20-year-old in Double-A, Riley was able to maintain generally consistent rates of both walks and strikeouts. Riley has already made adjustments to get his bat more directly to inside velocity. He still needs work on his timing and balance, but may very soon force evaluators to make room for him closer to the top of the Braves’ prospect lists.

Austin Riley - #6 BA Braves Prospect:

THE FUTURE: Riley headed to the Arizona Fall League, which will help prepare him for a move to Triple-A Gwinnett in 2018. Unless blocked by a future trade or free agent acquisition, Riley is the Braves' third baseman of the not-too-distant future.

Kid's going to be a beast...

Will Smith, C, Dodgers. Between Keibert Ruiz and Smith, the Dodgers have one of the better catching situations in the minors. Smith has made up for missed time from the 2017 season by hitting .362/.449/.517 in the AFL. The former Louisville star is very athletic for a catch.

Love me some Rockies...

8. Garrett Hampson, SS
DOB: 10/10/1994
Height/Weight: 5’11”, 185 lbs.
Bats/Throws: R/R
Drafted/Acquired: Drafted 81st overall in the 2016 draft, California State University Long Beach; signed for $750,000
Previous Ranking(s): N/R
2017 Stats: .326/.387/.462, 8 HR, 51 SB in 127 games at High-A Lancaster

The Good: Hampson’s a walking, talking archetype of a grinding, sparkplug middle infielder. His quick stroke and excellent hand-eye allow for all manner of in-swing adjustment and pitching-spoiling ability. Paired with a keen eye and strong discipline, it’s a skill set that lends itself to long, pain-in-the-ass at-bats, with a line drive on the eventual back end of ‘em more often than not. He’s smart, aggressive, and very fast on the bases, with a keen sense for situational risk-taking. He controls his body well in the field, with strong lateral agility and above-average range in all directions at short.

The Bad: The arm is light for the left side; he’ll struggle to finish plays to his right at short, and profiles better at the keystone. It’s a slash-and-dash approach at the dish, which has been an intentional and well-taken evolution from his college days, but one which might be stretched to hold against upper-level pitching. The lack of power will put significant pressure on his hit and speed tools to play to their respective ceilings if he’s going to generate positive offensive value.

The Role:

OFP 55–Above-average second baseman
Likely 45–Second-division starter/quality super-utility guy

The Risks: There’s some variance remaining in the profile here depending on how confident you are in the hit tool actualizing in spite of extremely limited power potential. We are on the “fairly confident” side of the spectrum. Regardless, he’s a polished player with a stellar and long track record of growth and development. The speed, instincts, and tenacity of approach offer a comfortable 25-man projection, with an evident path to production in a starting role. –Wilson Karaman

Major league ETA: 2019

Ben Carsley’s Fantasy Take: Must. Not. Be. Seduced. By. The. Hit. Tool. Nah, it’s still me – I’m all in. Hampson is a top-125 dynasty prospect based on his bat-to-ball ability, his speed, and his reasonable MLB ETA. Get in on him now, because if he performs in Hartford as he did in Lancaster, he’s going to gain some national recognition.

Sam Hilliard, OF, High-A Lancaster
A 15th-rounder out of Wichita State back in 2015, Hilliard can be a tough nut to crack on first glance. He’s deceptively fast for a man built like a tight end, especially one with such an unassuming gait. He posted consistent plus times to first all year, however, while gliding into more catches you’d think off a slower start-up in center, too. He’s stretched up the middle, however, profiling best in right, where the former college pitcher’s arm rates an easy plus. The big question is how much he’ll hit; there’s plus raw power in the bag, but non-traditional hitting mechanics produce a long, lagging swing that lacks for impact bat speed. He shows a pronounced vulnerability to high, hard stuff, though he does manage to stay reasonably balanced and flick off-speed pitches that appear to have beaten him the opposite way. Double-A will prove a significant test. –Wilson Karaman

More Garrett Hampson love!

Rockies BA #8
Track Record: Hampson is next in a long line of Long Beach State shortstops in the big leagues, headed by Bobby Crosby, Troy Tulowitzki, Danny Espinosa and Matt Duffy. Drafted in the third round and signed for $750,000 in 2016, Hampson led the minors with 113 runs and finished fourth with 51 steals in his first full season at high Class A Lancaster.

Scouting Report: A top-of-the-lineup catalyst, Hampson is an undersized plus-plus runer who plays at full speed all the time. He keeps the ball on the ground or strokes it on a line to let his speed play, and he shows hints of power, although that will never be his game. His plate discipline is improving, allowing him to project as an above-average hitter with a lot of steals. Hampson gets too big in his swing sometimes, but generally self-corrects. Drafted as a shortstop, Hampson's arm is a short for the position, but his exemplary hands, quick-first step and top-notch reaction times fit at second base, where he shows flashes of being a plus defender. He also got some exposure to center field last year.

The Future: Most evaluators see Hampson as a future super utility player, but a few see enough for him to start at second base. Double-A Hartford is next in 2018.

BP's Top 2b Fantasy Propects:
Favorite Sleeper
Garrett Hampson–Colorado Rockies

I have been doing this for four years now. If you’ve somehow stuck with me that long, you know that I have a serious weakness for plus-hit tool, plus-speed infielders. Hampson is the latest in a long line of two-tool MI’ers I’m apparently genetically predisposed to prefer. He’s got less power than Democratic leadership, but I love Hampson’s grind-it-out, never-K profile. If he can make that work enough to get on base at a .330-plus clip, he could swipe 30 bags as the sort of player I still pretend Jose Peraza can be. He’s about to go to hit Hartford, so his MLB ETA is sneaking up on us, too.

Top SP Candidates for 2018:
Corbin Burnes, Brewers

Pretty similar to Soroka, honestly, just with a less consistent track record and worse potential contextual factors. He gets lost in the mix when we talk about national pitching prospects, but the Brewers should be good this year and have an awfully thin rotation. He’s a dark horse for having some real 2018 fantasy value.

Top SP Candidates for 2019 & Beyond:
Honorable Mention: Kyle Cody

Top 3B Candidates for 2019 & Beyond:
Honorable Mention: Will Craig

Nice little shout out for one of my '17's...

He’ll be joined by J.J. Matijevic, who destroyed college pitchers last season but struggled a bit in his pro debut. Both are high-ceiling players with bright red warning labels, and will be interesting to watch in 2018.

Can't stop, won't stop...

16. Garrett Hampson, 2B/SS, Rockies
Team: Double-A Hartford (Eastern)
Age: 23
Why He’s Here: .385/.484/.577 (10-for-26), 6 R, 3 2B, 5 RBIs, 5 BB, 0 SO, 6-for-6 SB

The Scoop: Hampson often gets issued the “gamer” label because of his 5-foot-11 stature, but that moniker criminally undersells his athleticism. Hampson brings top-flight speed as a 70-grade runner on the 20-to-80 scouting scale, and he showed it off by stealing six bases in as many tries this week. After swiping 51 bags last year, he’s 11-for-11 in 16 games this season. Part of what makes Hampson such a prolific basestealer is how often he reaches base in the first place, showing excellent contact skills and excellent plate discipline, which has yielded more walks (nine) than strikeouts (four) so far this season. Re: Following the Baby Nats...

Haven't talked too much about them, but fun year for some Baby Nats:

Randy Cesar - Red hot after a 41-game hit streak, Cesar dropped a little over the summer, but has stabilized to a terrific .320/.369/.471 line at AA.
Zack Brown - Before hitting the DL, Brown was one of the top pitchers in AA with a 2.34 era & 1.02 whip in Biloxi.
Will Craig - Finally started tapping into his power in the 2nd half of this year (.254/.326/.470) at AA, and the former 1st rounder is a helium prospect for next year.
Omar Cruz - Has been unfair to hitters at R & A- this year, to a 1.34 era & 49 k's in his first 33 ip's of pro ball.
Dominic Miroglio - An excellent defensive catcher, Miroglio opened eyes leading the Cal League in average before getting promoted to AA (.330/.395/.460).
David Parkinson - Another one flying up prospect charts, Parkinson destroyed A to a 1.51 era, 1.05 whip, 115/95 k/ip before getting promoted to HA and promptly tossing 7 shutout ip's.
Taylor Walls - A smooth SS, Walls has surprised many with his batting and eye this year at A, racking up a .310/.405/.443 line.
Tyler Wells - Picked him up last year, and loved him, but he got hurt. Back this year he dominated HA (0.89 whip!) before getting promoted and tossing 4 scoreless AA ip's.
Eli White - Called a ss, he's also played 2b, 3b, and cf...but all he's done is hit wherever. In AA, he's raked to a .320/.405/.471 line...that's pretty good.
