JB and Kelly are appealing a vetoed trade. The league now acts as the TRC, and 20 votes are necessary to pass the deal.

The Trade:
Yankees receive: Chris Carter (A's), Joe Ross (2011 draftee)
Indians receive: Alfredo Aceves, NYY second round draft choice

Says JB:

The Indians are making a push to contend for the post-season and by adding Aceves he gets the starter he needs. Aceves has both a SP & RP rating in the sim this year has a quite good projection, ERA+117. IF you look at SPs in the range you will find the likes of Gallardo, Beckett, Price, Romero, etc. This is an immediate upgrade in the starting rotation. While some of the value will be lost for next season he is still a useful bullpen arm moving forward. Adding in the second round pick will allow him to get another solid prospect in next year's draft.

In return the Yankees are getting a potential DH if everything breaks right and worst case a power bench off the bat. Carter is currently having a nice season with Oakland, but before this last call-up many were calling him a AAAA player. To balance that risk the Yankees also receive Joe Ross, a first round pick last season. There is certainly upside if everything breaks right, but he has a long ways to go before fulfilling his upside.

In the end I'm not sure if the TRC thought the Yankees or Indians were getting the better deal, but on paper this veto certainly looks questionable at best.

Says Kelly:

Aceves - Has a SP/RP projection in the mid 3's now, and 25 saves in MLB. I'd use him as an SP this year and he has great value next year too.

2nd round draft pick. Nice.

Carter - AAAA hitter for a few years and suddenly has a few good weeks in MLB. Still won't ever field a damn thing even if the batter tells him it's coming right at him. I've seen him, and I'm not exagurating. Nice power potential still.

Ross. 6+ ERA in A-Ball. Might be useful in 2015.

Consider Ross and the #2 pick as a wash like I do. Aceves and Carter I consider a wash as well. Then consider my team and what I'm trying to accomplish this year, even if it doesn't work, I still like this deal as a "future" deal anyway.

I agree with JB's sentiments here, who does the TRC think this deal is bad for?

We've traditionally left dialogue in these polls out of the threads. It's probably best to keep it that way. Their rationale for vetoing it is largely irrelevant since the league itself turns into the TRC in the appeals process, so judge it as you yourself would.

Well seeing how much of an important role the TRC plays in this league, it would be nice if there was a bit of accountability there. I feel like if a trade is vetoed and brought to league vote, we should be able to see how each member of the TRC voted.

Vote is 18 to 3. Bit of a dead issue now. Only fitting Aceves blows a save and Carter goes 3-5 with a bomb to right center.

As someone who was on the TRC for a good while, I never had any issue sharing my vote/opinion. Same goes for exco votes. I've never quite understood the need for anonymity.

They probably vetoed the trade because Aceves is a 30 year old reliever that isn't very good and Carter is a 25 year old with game changing power, finally enjoying some success. Just a guess...

Most likely due to the teams involved. If this was a deal between Arizona and Washington - no one would have blinked an eye.

As a TRC guy, I honestly never saw this trade. I don't think it's a great deal, but I don't think I would have vetoed it either.

I was thinking it.....just didn't wanna say it.....

I have accepted the fact that whatever I accomplish in this league is gonna be looked upon differently as it would for other owners, and my road to any accomplishments will be cast without the same sense of a job well done amongst ya'll. I have brought this upon myself with years of admittedly poor roster management and poor results. I know whatever successes I may have in the future will be looked upon as "lucky" by some while another GM would be applauded for his crafty moves. As Red said so well in The Shawshank Redemption, "Either way, I don't give a shit."

I have a TON of fun being a GM in the IBC, and it is often a distraction to my personal life. I even chuckle everytime I'm the whipping post of the Power Rankings, cuz the truth is always funny. I feel I am a good and active GM, and an asset to the league. I hope you all do as well.

I also feel like the fact that the IBC Yanks were involved may have influenced the TRC. Sometimes I feel my deals come under a little more watchful eye ...

Not trying to pile on to the TRC, but with the deadline looming, can you guys try to process deals as quickly as possible? I know I've got one that's been there about 24 hours. I definitely realize you guys have other lives aside from the IBC, but some of us may be trying to work out multiple deals in a short time frame. Thanks for your efforts.

Chris Carter, Athletics
No one ever questioned Carter’s patience or power. They questioned whether he could hit breaking balls. The answer to the second question still seems to be “no,” but that hasn’t slowed the A’s big first baseman. The 25-year-old Carter entered this season with a .167/.226/.254 career line and just three home runs amassed over 124 plate appearances from 2010-11, but he’s cranked home runs at the fifth-highest rate in the AL in 2012. The problem: only one of his 12 homers came against a breaking ball. Carter is crushing fastballs, batting almost .350 and slugging close to .800 against them, but he’s hit .133 and slugged .244 vs. curveballs and sliders. If those splits persist, it’s unlikely that opposing pitchers will continue to feed him fastballs at an above-average rate, and more breaking balls would be bad news. Carter isn’t out of the woods yet.

Pedro Alvarez, Pirates
Perhaps made complacent by a solid rookie year in 2010, Pedro Alvarez let his conditioning slip and suffered from an injury-filled and ineffective sophomore season. Several weeks in Indianapolis failed to straighten him out, and he hit just .171 for Pittsburgh in September. His third big-league season didn’t start much better: through June 15th, Alvarez hit .189/.254/.373. Since then, though, he’s been one of the best hitters in baseball. Alvarez’s .328 TAv after June 15th ranks eighth among hitters with at least 200 PA (but only third on the Pirates, thanks to Andrew McCutchen and Garrett Jones), and fortunately for St. Louis, much of his damage has been done against a division rival. His 26 homers tie him for the fourth-highest total in the NL. The power that made Alvarez the second overall pick in the 2008 draft is the same power that’s propelling the Pirates now. There’s still too much swing-and-miss in his game, but it should be smoother sailing from here.
