So I listened to the new Tame Impala that FINALLY dropped.. pretty solid album. But, not a standout for me on first listen.

I'm onto one of my favorite electronic mix albums of all time.. It will be 20 years old next year. Damn, where does the time go..

Sasha & John Digweed - Northern Exposure

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaY3spCDdpY

You wont find it on spotify.. Not even sure if you can really find it in stores anymore. Edit.. just found the cd going for a starting price of 54 bucks on discogs..

"In The Mix ranked Northern Exposure the 5th best mix album of all time in its list of the top 30 ever, saying it's "considered the pinnacle of Sasha and Digweed’s joint efforts, Northern Exposure confirmed the mastery of both DJs. It’s what every mix-CD wants to be: timeless"[1] Rolling Stone ranked the album as the 25th "greatest EDM album ever", saying "good DJs take you on a journey, and English icons Sasha and John Digweed – whether working together or separately – specialized on rolling the listener through Nineties EDM's most bucolic landscapes. Their best-loved mix CD is a trippy traipse through the verdant world of progressive house, a genre with one foot in the rave and the other somewhere in the great beyond."

On a completely different note from what Mr. Hunter just posted, I've been on a Hiss Golden Messenger kick lately. A combination of Americana/folk and some bluesy roots rock--the songwriting is impeccably tight and the sound has some impressive depth.

From their appearance on Letterman last year (adding the horn section transforms this song into a pantry-dropper):

I'm still on a dance music kick... Right now I'm listening to Discogs #2 mix album of all time; Joris Voorn - Balance 014

Must say its absolutely stunning.. Incredible Mix Album. Zalaski, this is what its all about..

Disk 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5W84iW77sNA

Disk 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWbaM23q9H4

Here's what discogs had to say:

Joris Voorn - Balance 014

What DJ Shadow did for Hip-Hop, Joris Voorn does for DJ'ing. Balance 014 represents a giant leap - of which Neil Armstrong would be proud - forward for the sometimes beleaguered (and sometimes fairly so) mix format. Here, across 2 discs and utilizing - remarkably - over 100 tracks, Joris Voorn constructs a seamless mix of some of the best in tech house, minimal techno and almost every other form of electronic / dance music. Voorn used both Ableton and Traktor to edit and rearrange each track, using full tracks, bars, and breakdowns as necessary. Track five on Disc 1 alone includes components from Dub Kult, Kenneth Graham, Je Dàvu, William Kouam Djoko and Johnny D. Although the mixing of the music is layered, and Voorn shifts moods and tempos regularly, it is seamless enough that it would take a perceptive ear to isolate the components of each track. The sheer number (not to mention the quality) of the samples he amasses - in addition to the framework he constructs into which they are fixed - justifies this being tagged as his 'Magnum Opus', no question. If there was a Nobel Prize for mixing, this would win it twice over (once for each disc. "yes, they are both that good"). Voorn describes this work as painting with music, which is bang on. Both discs - the first emotive, full of deep electronic ambient and in turns equally dance oriented; the other the same but slower, steadier to build and more musical - lock your mind into compositional analysis, and into interpreting the shades and tonal spread on offer, as does visual art. Suddenly it's fun to learn. Dancing is fun as well, and Balance 14 will make you do that too.

The Joris Voorn is absolutely stunning. Its blended so stunningly well I would never have imagined he utilized over 100 records to get that.

I'd recommend the Henry Saiz Balance albums as well. They take a little bit to really hit their stride, but once they do its amazing and you realize as a whole how genius the mixes are.

Going a bit old school today..

The Alan Parsons Project - Pyramid

Is there a better opening tune than Voyager? I know its just an intro piece, but its fantastic. Transition into What Goes Up is lovely, and then The Eagle Will Rise Again is calming bliss. An almost perfect trio of songs.

So, I don't know how many of you are aware(probably none), but the company I work for(Beatport) has partnered up with Spotify recently. We're going to share some content that is normally exclusive to our store with them. In addition to that, we've begun curating playlists for users on Spotify. I'm currently listening to the Beatport Top 50 Club playlist and I must say whoever curated the list did a very very nice job.

https://open.spotify.com/user/beatportp ... 7k6dNcqq9f

This is more underground music, less "accessible" if you will than more of the mainstream sound, so it might not be for everyone. But check it out.. there are a handful of other lists on there as well, that might be more your speed if you're into the more mainstream stuff(Looking at you Zalaski).

Here is our Spotify profile if you want to follow: https://open.spotify.com/user/beatportprofile

Kiev - Falling Bough Wisdom Teeth

https://open.spotify.com/album/3GtswezCq8Klu6UGMTOdcB

Stumbled upon this album through my Spotify Discovery Weekly playlist, track 2.. Ariah Being was included on my playlist and it immediately grabbed my attention.

This album starts off with a super mellow track(how do you make a track like this work as a starter to an album? IDK, but Kiev manages to pull it off), but the rest of the album is an amazing whirlwind of psychedelic, prog/math/indie rock with further jazz, bee bop, and jam band elements. Some of those things I normally find are "not for me" at best, and typically beyond obnoxious in most cases, but all the while Kiev in this case straddles the line perfectly, and never goes too far. Always reigning these sounds in at the right moment and right time. This album goes down easy.

Andrew, I think you would be particularly interested in this album, so give it a listen.

The Bright Light Social Hour - Space Is Still The Place

Andrew, you might be familiar with these guys, as they made a splash in their home state of Texas.

This one is one of those "journey" albums, that you gotta listen to start to finish to really appreciate, I think. Take a track here and there on its own, and you might not be totally impressed. But as a whole, its a bit of a psychedelic, space rock masterpiece really gaining steam and taking off halfway through. A very nice listen.. parts of it remind me of early Alan Parsons Project stuff, and then all the sudden it gives me a Black Keys vibe.

Oh hell yes. I've seen them live a half dozen times (great live show), though they don't really have that rock & roll mystique since I see half of them working at one of my favorite bars here...here's hoping for bigger success from them.

I can't say I've listened to much new stuff lately--I have been on one hell of a Kraftwerk bender while getting excited for their upcoming shows here. They're one group that I've always wanted to see live. So here's a cut from their 2005 live album:

So today Ryan Adams released his album of Taylor Swift covers. After my semi-traumatic over-exposure ti Swift's music earlier this month, I've had her stuck in my head more often than I'd like to mention. Enter the antidote--Adams has a wonderful, sparse take on these songs and they really do sound gorgeous in his hands, stripped of their pop (hell, they sound quite a bit like songs he'd write in the first place).

Sorry Andrew.. can't.. do.. it.

My baby girl is approaching 2 years old, so there will be(unfortunately) many years of Taylor Swift or whoever the next Taylor Swift is by the time she's a little older in store for me in the future.

I'm not trying to speed up that process though.

I will listen to everything Ryan Adams does. Even though he's an egocentric paranoid neurotic dick, he's one of my favorites all time.

Just disappointed the physical disc/vinyl doesn't come out till Nov. 6. I've never jumped on collecting digital media - and not going to start now.
