How to not manage a payroll

One of life's great mysteries is how in the blue hell Brian Sabean has a world series ring. Today the Giants signed Javier Lopez and exercised Jeremy Affeldt's option. That's $9.25 million on lefty relievers. As of now the Giants payroll stands at 82 million, which doesn't include whatever they're going to have to pay Tim Lincecum, Jonathan Sanchez, and whoever else in arbitration. Of that $82 million, 42.6 of it is committed to Huff, Zito, and Rowand. and $51.85 of it is committed to those three plus left handed relievers. Yikes. As I read about CC, Pujols, Fielder, Beltran and Ramirez signing for big bucks around the league I will be thinking about this.

He sold his soul to the devil and said, give me 4 great pitchers (Cain, Lince, MadBum, and Wilson) at really cheap prices for one year.

Of course it will now completely fall apart because in another year there is no way all four of those pitchers and the rest of the staff can be afforded.

Ideally, if Zito and Rowand could drop dead that would be great to alleviate some $25 million in bad investments each year.

That is the truth.

And yet another stupid move by a retarded GM. Trades away a LH pitcher at his lowest value for a CF that can't really play CF...atleast if they got Coco he could defend the vast space.

I always tell people that I know I could manage better than 95% of MLB managers just through being in this league and doing h2h so much. At this point I have very little doubt you could take a few IBC guys, put them in the front office and in the dugout and have a first rate organization in a couple of years

Melky might get you a 3rd round pick here.

Melky had 44 doubles and 18 homers? Guess I underrated him a bit but I still hate that guy.

Problem was you were going to have to pay Sanchez, that value was never going back up. Sabes has a real hardon for centerfielders. You knew he was going to go get one.

I have no problem with him trading Sanchez, would have recommended he do it last year...but for Melky...come on man.

I guess getting something was better than nothing. As said above...waited just a bit long to get any value

Does anyone think Melky is a CF or even anything more than a 4th OF?

Yes. Two people do. Unfortunately 1 is Brian Sabean and the other is Bruce Bochy...

Sources say utility man Willie Bloomquist had a two-year offer from the Giants worth more than the $3.8M he took to stay in Arizona.

I remember when the Cardinals went to the Super Bowl Pro Football Talk repeatedly referred to them as the Blind Squirrels (as in even a blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut). I sure hope that isn't what's happening with the Giants but yeesh...
