KANSAS CITY, MO - The rubber game of the series between the Royals and Detroit Tigers was a pitcher's duel that lasted until the 10th frame.

KC starter Brett Anderson, fresh off of a disappointing rookie campaign last season in the IBC, threw eight suberb innings, scattering five hits, striking out five, walking one, and allowing just one run. Dallas Braden nearly matched him, throwing 7 1/3 innings, surrendering seven hits, allowing a run to score, striking out five and walking three.

Turning it over to the bullpen in the top of the ninth, D.J. Carrasco gave up a lead-off double to Miguel Cabrera, but went on to retire the next three batters to get out of trouble.

Carrasco returned to the mound in the tenth, but gave up a lead-off single to Jhonny Peralta and walked pinch hitter Tyson Gillies before Jason Frasor would come in to relieve him.

Chase Utley would promptly single off of Frasor, scoring Peralta. Hanley Ramirez then lined into a double play, but due to some confusion in the field, Gillies managed to score, giving the Tigers a 3-1 lead. Mike Gonzalez came in and struck out the side in the bottom of the tenth, picking up his first save of the season and slamming the door on the Royals.

The Royals' only offense today came from Jason Kubel, who hit a solo home run, his second of the year, to left-center to lead off the second inning.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Chase Utley.
