Mormons, Polygamy and the SoCaS

The hot chicks thread and a teaser for a news story about a polygamist sect here in Colorado got me thinking about this issue... How the hell does it not go against the separation of church and state to ban polygamy? I'm not a fan of polygamist groups, don't get me wrong, especially since they seem to have a nasty habit of marrying off 12yr olds to middle-aged men, and don't allow women to have multiple husbands if they so chose, but how is it constitutional not only for the government to say you can't have two wives if it's allowed in your religion, but how could the government seize church assets because of it? It's even said that the Mormon church renouncing polygamy was a condition of Utah being admitted to the US.
