Shut down for the Season
Since we all know how much of a pain in the ass and how much of a gray area there is for the injuries at this time of year, this thread will be used to report players who have been shut down for the year. If they are being shut down for the year due to injury then they will not be playing in the IBC.
Everybody is welcome to add to this thread as they see fit, since we all like a variety of MLB teams, other people will catch other players that I or Shawn or Jim or anybody otherwise might not catch.
Anyway, here's a start:
Joe Crede
Joe Mather
Carlos Quentin

Although he came off the DL on September 1, the Sun Times reports:
Veteran right-hander Jon Lieber, one of the top influences in the clubhouse, has been shut down after being unable to shake some of the nagging aches and minor ailments that have limited him since early in the season. He left the team over the weekend and went home to Mobile, Ala.
It does not say he is done for the season, but presumably he is.

Mark Ellis will sit out the rest of the season after being diagnosed with a torn labrum in his right shoulder, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Ellis has barely played in weeks, so the writing was on the wall. He's yet to decide on surgery. Whatever he chooses, his value as a free agent takes a major hit with the news. Perhaps he'll stay with the A's on a one-year deal and try to rebuild his value. Oakland will keep using Eric Patterson at second base for now.

Outfielder Rick Ankiel will be shut down for the season and likely will undergo surgery to repair the lower abdominal issue that has bothered him for the past seven weeks. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... Id=rss_mlb
The Cardinals announced on Friday that they are shutting down Chris Carpenter for the season, ending a disappointing and frustrating campaign for the former Cy Young Award winner. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... p&c_id=stl
Tom Gorzelanny learned on Friday that his already tumultuous season has come to a premature end. After a visit with a specialist in Pittsburgh, he learned that he had suffered a ligament sprain in his left middle finger on Wednesday. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... p&c_id=mlb

Kenny Rogers has been shut down for the season after another poor outing in Sunday's doubleheader.
With Fredddy Garcia and Dontrelle Willis back, it seems like the right move. The Tigers didn't say whether there was an injury, but at the very least, Rogers is dealing with some sort of tired arm. He's had very little on his fastball while struggling mightily of late.

Along with Jesus Flores also!

Young, Flores likely done for '08
The Nats learned yesterday that Jesus Flores and Dmitri Young probably won't play again this season. Both underwent MRIs at Nats Park for their various sprains and strains. In Flores's case, the decision to halt all comeback plans makes perfect sense: The catcher has been frustrated in the last week with how slowly his ankle injury is progressing; though he's able to jog around, squatting (as a catcher must) still causes pain. Perhaps he could make it back for a few games at the end of the season, but what's the point of that? He'd only risk further injury. As Manny Acta said, the Nationals have seen all they need to from Flores this year to know he's their future backstop. That is, Acta quipped, unless "Johnny Bench in his mid-20s" comes walking into the clubhouse.

According to the Detroit News, Carlos Guillen may be shut down for the season "if his stiff back doesn't improve" soon.
Guillen missed his 18th straight game Monday and has yet to even begin running. Jeff Larish and Mike Hessman have been platooning at third base in his absence.

Adrian Beltre went 0-for-4 in his final game of the season Sunday against the Angels.
He'll undergo surgery for a damaged ligament in his thumb on Thursday.

Right-hander Anthony Reyes has pitched his last game for the Indians this season.
Reyes played catch on Monday to test his sore right elbow. He was going to throw again today, but the Indians decided against it.
"We're going to shut him down," said manager Eric Wedge. "There's no sense in pushing it. He did a fantastic job. He showed us what we needed to see. We need to do everything we can to make sure he's healthy for the start of next year."

A season full of cringes ended painfully for starter Jeff Francis on Tuesday as he was shut down after developing slight shoulder soreness again.

How exactly is it decided when a player is "shut down for the year"? I know in most cases it is black and white, they had surgery, etc. But is it completely arbitrary in other cases? How do we handle someone who is out for 2 weeks in September but never put on the DL? How do we handle someone who could play if their team was in contention but since not they decide to shut down to rest for next year? How do we handle players who are out now but might make it back by end of the year?
I know this has been an issue every year in the league, but it seems like this thread has been taken as the definitive, official list this year and that seems kind of arbitrary.
