Would love the league's thoughts on the following:

Certainly not for this season, but for 2009, allowing draft pick trading immediately after the amateur draft. Since it's nearly impossible to place a value on these picks anyway, this would allow a team that falls out of the race an opportunity to trade their SIM oddball to a contender for a pick if the contender didn't have a lot of other resources.

That would be just one example of its uses, but it could help the push towards long-term balancing of power, by allowing teams out of the running to stockpile some picks. I can't imagine many contenders trading good SIM players for picks - thus I really only see this going in a positive direction.

Just a thought - would love to hear others...

In BCMBL, we start draft pick trading after the Allstar break.

It really makes the deadline juicy, and helps teams that are that one player away.

Only drawback is you need to designate someone to keep track of the picks, assuming Shawn doesn't add them into OPPSS.

I'm on board with doing it at the break since we have a good idea of where guys will be picking and since it really does add a lot of flavor and possibilities to the dealings. But I get the feeling that some guys fear other guys' judgment too much to allow it.

We've done it in the past. I don't see why it can't be done again, especially since we have some fairly smart GMs on board now. The problem will be valuing the picks to the TRC and how they pass trades. We would have to sort of rewrite the trade process book, which, I think needs some rewriting anyway.

I like the post ASB idea, especially if Shawn can implement picks into OOPSS, if that doesn't happen it'll turn into a real headache making the draft order.

I like the idea but like Z said, this has to be something done next year, we can't try and do it now. Anyone want to make restrictions on Gabe's picks, since he'll certainly deal a 1st and 2nd rounder for Bob Howry

We just have a moderator update it on the board whenever someone is traded.

You just have an excel type format...
Team.....1.......2......3......4......5......
Angels...........TB.............................
A's................................BOS...........
etc...

I've always kept it on Excel, and updated whenever a trade was processed. I'm sure there's a better way for someone more tech saavy.

Why wouldn't we be able to do it now?

Get the technical stuff ironed out, figure out the proper way to value potential draft picks, that sort of thing.

Well that should take about a day, plus however long it takes Shawn to re-implement what he did last winter. That doesn't seem like much of a reason(s).

I have to agree with Brett here. None of the things, aside from a vote and more thought, would take more than a day to a week maximum. I don't think this would have to be something to wait until next year since it would be around this time next year when it would be available (ASB time.)

Listen - if we can get it done this year, I say do it - but make sure we've crossed the t's and dotted the lowercase j's on it. It scares me when you say this can be done in a day - I feel better when you say a week.

I'd like the trading period to be over before our draft starts. No more holding the draft hostage while you shop your pick.

This is something I totally agree with. No more "pre-draft" period either where you can make your selection, your wait 26 days to pick.

I absolutely agree ... of course this means once the draft starts [even unoffically or 'before the clock begins'] we suspend the trading of draft picks!

I disagree that it can be done in a week because of the contentious issue of value of those picks vs. value of sub AA prospects. Knowing this league that will take more than a week to properly debate, and we should really have our trade rules cleaned up before we start adding new ones.

I say we all suck it up. Everyone knows that this is a weak draft....and that no one after pick 40 is probably worth shit.

That being said...a 4th round pick is better than a rebuilding team carrying Kevin Millar.

It's pretty much common sense. If we don't have the faith in our GM's that we trust that they know what they're doing, then we need new GM's...

I think the hardest question you'll get throughout the rest of the season is: How high of a pick is a Gary Sheffield type worth? To a pennant race team...Possible a 2nd round...how can a TRC reject that if he's the difference of a team making the postseason or not.

I guess my question is...It's only as difficult to implement as everyone makes it. The hardest thing about potential draft pick trading is teams trading the draft picks having to clear room on their 50 man roster.

Before anything is done here, I would like to hear what other GMs in the league think about this. It wouldn't shift the shape of the league, but it would give extra assets to deal and extra assets for the rebuilding teams to gain especially around deadline time. I have no problem with it, but if there is a ton of league opposition then maybe we should hold off. Would like to hear others thoughts on this.

Now that I'm back from drinkin', diggin razor clams and just plain 'ol whootin' it up in Ninilchik, AK I'll throw my 2 cents in.

1. Draft pick trading shouldn't begin until after the All-Star break, at the earliest.

2. What would appear to be the easiest way to track, IMO, would be to have Shawn create five '08 draft players on each teams roster and then they just get traded and tracked as such, until draft time. i.e. my roster would have a Seattle '08 Rd 1, Seattle '08 Rd 2, Seattle '08 Rd 3, Seattle '08 Rd 4 and Seattle '08 Rd 5, players created in OOPSS. Our draft rosters would have to be increased by 5 to accomodate for the time frame from All-Star break to Draft day. Going to have to figure out whether to regulate rosters to only 5 '08 designated ghost roster players or allow more on each roster. But that would seem to be the easiest way to track the draft picks.

3. Draft pick trading ends as soon as the first pick of the draft is made. Whether that is at the official start date on Jan 1 if we wait that long or whenever the first pick is made, if its made earlier in December. Either way, draft pick trading would not be allowed during the draft.

Maybe some more thoughts later, but that's the basics from me for now.
