Down on the Farm - 2022

Post by Braves »

Some Spring Training notes to kick things off: https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories ... -training/

Taj Bradley, RHP, Rays

“He looks really good. High-90s fastball with two plus secondary pitches. Great athlete, great body, still projectable. He’s middle-of-the-rotation-type future. He’s really started to come into his own. He showed quality feel to pitch, decent control with some command. Definitely seems like arrow is pointing upward pretty steeply. It’s good stuff and it’s pretty projectable. He makes you sit there and think, ‘Wow if everything is starting to come together this quickly, where are we going to be this time next year?’ ”

Jared Triolo, 3B, Pirates

“He has a chance to be scary good. He’s my pick to click. The growth he’s made from last spring and summer to now, it’s just better and better and better in every facet of the game. On both sides he kind of reminds me of Ryan Zimmerman. He has a chance to be that good, especially defensively. He’s got agility, he’s got athleticism, he’s got arm versatility, he’s got arm strength. He checks every box at third base. I think he can play shortstop and be a solid-average defender at shortstop. In their system he’s the guy who doesn’t get talked about who has a chance to be a star. I think he’s got a chance to be special. He can hit, he’s got big power. He has a chance to be impactful on both sides of the ball.”

Daulton Varsho, C/OF, D-backs Editor's Note: Yeah - he's not a prospect but he was included in the article so he's included here as well.

“He’s looked good. Obviously he’s super athletic, and he’s even more athletic than you see on video or on camera or anything. I thought he’d be like an average defender in center, he might even be above-average, better than I thought. He just moves so well and his bat speed is there. He looks pretty good offensively. He looks comfortable at the plate, not really pressing, knows he has a job and isn’t trying to force anything. He’s working counts and he’s selling out for power in the right counts when he’s up 2-0, 2-1 and knows he’s going to get fastball. He’s been a little too early, pulling stuff well foul, but that’s just timing. Once he gets his timing down, I think he might be a 20-homer guy. I didn’t know if he would be before, but he’s got the bat speed, he’s got the talent and obviously he’s athletic as hell.”

And some prospect specific notes: https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories ... -training/

Hunter Brown, RHP, Astros

"He’s looked much improved. Much improved. I always had command and feel concerns with him and whether he was going to be a reliever with just two pitches, but he’s commanding 3-4 pitches pretty well. Just last September, he wasn’t doing that. It used to be just his fastball and a big nasty curve and fastball command was questionable. But now it’s all working. He’s added a little slider that’s very functional and his changeup is pretty good too. Something has clicked or seems to be clicking. That’s a great arsenal and he’s commanding it. If he can command it as well as he’s commanded it this spring, it’s a front-of-the-rotation starter. Before I thought he might just be a reliever with a fastball up in the zone, power curveball and that’s it. He’s a better pitcher now."

Brady House, SS, Nationals

“He’s hitting bombs. He’s probably not a shortstop, jury is still out, but luckily they don’t have enough other shortstops to force him off it anytime soon. Probably third base if I had to guess, maybe even first base depending on how much he bulks up, but he’s hitting nukes. No doubt about the bat.”

Top Rookies to Watch: https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories ... -for-2022/

15. Hunter Greene, RHP, Reds
Age: 22

After missing all of 2019 recovering from Tommy John surgery and 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, Greene showed he still possessed elite stuff when he returned to the mound in 2021. With a fastball that averaged 99 mph and nearly touched 105 and a much-improved slider and changeup, Greene is set to play a significant role in the Reds' rotation.

104.9: The speed of Greene’s hardest fastball, in miles per hour, he threw in the minors last season.

Some odds & ends from the last couple of days;

Bradley dominates in Montgomery (April 14)
After a season debut in which he allowed a run on four hits across four innings of work, No. 3 prospect Taj Bradley put together another strong performance against Tennessee, again allowing a run on four hits while racking up eight strikeouts.

White fans eight in strong start (April 15)
After struggling in his season debut, Owen White rebounded with a strong performance in High-A Hickory’s 4-3 loss to Bowling Green.

White, the No. 8 Rangers prospect, fanned eight over five scoreless innings of two-hit ball. It was the fourth game of the 22-year-old’s career with eight or more strikeouts and he has fanned 11 batters over eight innings with a 2.25 ERA this year.

Sands nearly unhittable in Triple-A debut (April 7)
In his first start of the season and first time pitching at the Minors’ highest level, No. 17 prospect Cole Sands was just about perfect, with seven strikeouts over five one-hit innings with no walks.

Clarke has first career multihomer game (April 15)
Denzel Clarke followed up his first career four-hit game on April 14 with his first career multihomer game in High-A Stockton’s 14-10 win over Modesto.

The A’s No. 17 prospect went 3-for-5 with four RBIs, four runs scored and a stolen base out of the leadoff spot, connecting on home runs in the first and seventh innings. In his past two games, Clarke has gone 7-for-10 with three homers, seven RBIs, eight runs scored and two stolen bases

Harrison continues hot start, fans 9 over 5 scoreless
Kyle Harrison turned heads in his pro debut last season when he won Low-A West Pitcher of the Year honors. In 2022, he’s looking for a repeat performance.

MLB’s No. 74 prospect fired another gem on Friday night, this time striking out nine over five shutout innings in High-A Eugene’s thrilling 1-0 victory over Spokane. Harrison allowed only two hits and a walk as he tossed 44 of his 62 pitches for strikes.

Nicolas, Jones strut their stuff on the bump (April 17)
Two of Pittsburgh's brightest young hurlers lived up to their reputation with a pair of eye-opening performances.

Kyle Nicolas was perfect in his second start of the season, retiring all 12 batters he faced in Double-A Altoona's 6-2 loss to Richmond. The No. 19 Pirates prospect struck out five and needed only 46 pitches to complete four frames. Nicolas, who was the 61st overall pick in the 2020 Draft, is unscored upon while fanning 10 in 7 2/3 innings this season. The 6-foot-4 right-hander was 6-4 with a 4.18 ERA and 136 strikeouts in 99 frames last year across two Minor League levels.

OF Peyton Burdick
Last September, Burdick received a promotion to Triple-A Jacksonville after compiling an .848 OPS at Double-A Pensacola in his first full pro season. Through 11 games in 2022, the 25-year-old has 16 runs, one double, three homers, three stolen bases and six RBIs. Burdick has struck out 14 times and walked 10 times.

3. Kyle Harrison, LHP, Giants
Team: High-A Eugene (Northwest)
Age: 20

Why He’s Here: 0-0, 0.00, 9 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 16 SO, 0 HR

The Scoop: Harrison ranks as the top pitching prospect in the Giants’ system, and he’s spent his first two starts showing exactly why he’s earned that title. The lefthander—pitching in a newly hitter-friendly PK Park—has locked his opponents nearly all the way down. His 16 punchouts are second in the NWL to Everett’s Adam Macko, but the most encouraging sign is that they’ve come while pounding the strike zone. He walked close to five hitters per nine innings last year, and walked just one in his first nine this year. Combining his electric stuff with improved command and control would go a long way toward improving his already exciting profile. (JN)

5. Hunter Greene, RHP, Reds (MLB No. 22 prospect)
If this were a hot list in the sense of Q rating, Greene might well be at the very top. As it is, he’s certainly worth taking note of. He’s racked up 13 Ks against just two walks in 10 1/3 innings over two starts, both on the road against two of the best offenses in the Braves and Dodgers. He has been touched for three homers and five runs, or else he’d rank even higher. But there’s no more must-watch rookie pitcher in the game than Greene.

(21) Triston Casas, 1B, Boston Red Sox; Previous (NR)

I’m dipping my toes into some Casas optimism here. I’m not skeptical about his talent, mind you, just the timeline for his call up. So far this season the 22-year-old has knocked three homers in 11 games, with a .984 OPS and 1:1 strikeout to walk ratio. Also, Bobby Dalbec is hitting .167 and striking out more than 30 percent of the time.

Langeliers starting to pick up steam (April 21)
Shea Langeliers has gotten hot over the course of the past three games, collecting a hit in eight of his last 13 at-bats.

The No. 58 overall prospect put an exclamation point on his latest performance with a 432-foot homer to dead center field for Triple-A Las Vegas. Although the Aviators fell, 6-5, to El Paso, Langeliers went 3-for-5 to push his batting average to .341 with a 1.113 OPS.

The second-ranked Oakland prospect has collected at least a hit in his last three games, with his best outings coming at the Chihuahuas' expense. On April 19, Langeliers was 4-for-5 with two doubles. -- Ethan Sands

House crushes three-run HR in 4-RBI day (April 24)
The 11th overall pick of the 2021 Draft, Brady House has been off to a flaming-hot start to his first full professional season. The No. 2 prospect notched his second four-RBI game in Single-A Fredericksburg’s 16-8 win over Kannapolis, smacking a three-run homer in the process.

After a scoreless first inning, House put the bow on a seven-run Nationals inning with a three-run blast to left-center on a 3-1 pitch, his second long ball of the young season and first since April 9. He added a single in the fourth and an RBI groundout to complete his day. The 18-year-old has notched at least one hit in 14 of his 15 games played and has driven in at least one run in all but two contests, good for a .379/.455/.530 line. His 23 RBIs are tied for the most in the Minors and his 25 hits rank second.

Kyle Harrison, LHP, San Francisco Giants (High-A Eugene)
Entering the season as the Giants’ top pitching prospect, Harrison is picking up where he left off last season, when the lefty was named Low-A West pitcher of the year. The 2020 third-round pick (85th overall) out of De La Salle High School in the Bay Area led the Low-A West league in strikeouts per nine innings (14.3) last season; and it’s been more of the same in High-A Eugene. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound has a 1.00 WHIP and is averaging 1.9 punchouts per inning through his first 11 innings, good for league-best. In my recent viewing the 20-year old showcased an abbreviated wind-up; low ¾ delivery and a get-it-and-go rhythm that paired well with his dominant three-pitch mix, highlighted by a 94-97 mph heater with late arm-side run and a hard biting plus slider that consistently sat 84-85. Harrison also flashed a mid-80’s change-up with late fall-off-the-table action. While the lefty displayed the confidence to throw each pitch at any time in the count, his overall command proved to be average at best, occasionally missing location and finding the barrel more frequently than he’d like.

Since being drafted, Harrison has experienced nice progress in the development of his three-pitch repertoire: He’s added a couple of ticks to his fastball, his slider is sharper with tighter shape, and his change-up has found its way into the mix with more frequency. Harrison has only issued 3 walks in his first 11 innings, but as the season progresses and the lefty gains experience against more advanced bats, it will be critical to further fine-tune his ability to locate each of his pitches and improve his overall command—on his current trajectory, he could quickly through the Giants system and profile as a solid middle-rotation starter as soon as 2024. —Kevin Johnson

Catcher: Shea Langeliers, Las Vegas Aviators (Triple-A)
Athletics No. 2, MLB No. 58
.417/.482/.750, 6 G, 10-for-24, 2 HR, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 6 R, 3 BB, 5 K

Langeliers isn’t the highest-rated catcher in the A’s system -- that distinction goes to Oakland’s No. 1 prospect Tyler Soderstrom -- but he is the closest to the big leagues with Soderstrom at High-A. Knocking on the door of the Majors at Triple-A, Langeliers is making noise with his bat to complement his already impressive defensive tools, which include a 65 fielding grade and 70-grade arm on the 20-to-80 scouting scale. The backstop kicked off his week with a 4-for-5 day in his team’s April 19 series opener against El Paso, lashing two doubles, and then continued to rake throughout the six-game set. Langeliers reached in five of six games, adding another multihit affair with three knocks on April 21. Acquired from Atlanta in the trade that sent Matt Olson east, Langeliers played 97 games between Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett last year, slashing a combined .256/.339/.494.

A's: Shea Langeliers, C (No. 2/MLB No. 58)
Traded to a new team during Spring Training? No problem. Jumping to Triple-A full-time? Easy. After showing his power was legit with 22 homers in the Braves system in 2021, he’s making a very strong first impression with the A’s since coming over in the Matt Olson trade. He’s hit five homers in 15 games, he’s drawing walks and not striking out much for a .309/.397/.636 line. And while this story is about hitting, it should be noted he’s thrown out six of 10 potential basestealers.

Nationals: Brady House, SS (No. 2/MLB No. 48)
The Nats grabbed the 6-foot-4 shortstop with the 11th overall pick in July because of his offensive potential more than his work with the glove. It’s certainly playing out of the gate in his first full season. House ranks third among all Minor League hitters with 25 hits (most among Single-A batters) and owns a .379/.455/.530 overall line through 77 plate appearances. It’s likely more power is coming, considering only six of his 25 hits have gone for extra bases for the 60-grade slugger.

Langeliers bashes sixth home run with Aviators (April 27)
It's never easy being the new guy, but Shea Langeliers is fitting in just fine with Triple-A Las Vegas. One of the key components in the deal that sent Matt Olson from Oakland to Atlanta, Langeliers continues to produce with his new organization -- powering the Aviators to a 6-5 win over Tacoma.

The second-ranked A's prospect mashed a go-ahead, two-run shot to the deepest part of the park in center in the fifth -- for his sixth dinger of the season. It was the 24-year-old's second long ball in the past three games.

MLB Pipeline's No. 58 overall prospect is sporting a .290/.389/.629 slash line with nine extra-base hits, 14 RBIs and 13 runs scored over 17 games this year. -- Rob Terranova

Hitter of the day:
Liover Peguero, SS, Pittsburgh Pirates (Double-A Altoona): 4-5, 2 R, 2 2B, HR, RBI, SB.

Pittsburgh loved Peguero’s upside enough to make him the key return in the 2020 Starling Marte deal. That promise looks to be turning into production more this season as he’s off to a hot start in the Eastern League, slashing .322/.344/.542 in his first 14 games. His athleticism will allow him to stick at the six and if the bat continues to develop, he could be the future at short for the Pirates.

Others of Note:
Kyle Harrison, LHP, San Francisco Giants (High-A Eugene): 4 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 11 K.

Harrison fans 11, Luciano goes deep to lead Emeralds (April 28)
Kyle Harrison turned in his most dominant performance as a professional, striking out 11 over four innings, and Marco Luciano went deep to lead High-A Eugene to a 4-1 win over Tri-City.

Harrison, the No. 3 Giants prospect, recorded three strikeouts in three different innings and scattered three hits and a pair of walks across his 71-pitch outing. The 20-year-old has a 3.00 ERA in four starts and a 32-to-5 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 15 innings. Opponents are batting just .193 against him.

Luciano went deep for the fourth time and tallied his second consecutive multihit game. Baseball's No. 13 overall prospect is batting .321/.361/.607 with eight extra-base hits and nine RBIs in 15 games.

Langeliers homers in back-to-back games (April 30)
It's hard to follow-up a night where you hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth, but No. 57 overall prospect Shea Langeliers found a way.

The Oakland No. 2 prospect helped Las Vegas to a 10-2 victory over Tacoma, where Langeliers went 2-for-5 with two home runs. His first came in the third inning when he hit a two-run shot to center field. The second was a solo shot to left-center field in the fifth inning.

The catcher has six home runs in his last 10 games, totaling 12 RBIs over that span while hitting .301 on the season.

The 24-year-old was selected by the Braves with the ninth overall pick in the 2019 Draft, and he has worked his way up to Triple-A.

The Athletics currently have four catchers on their depth chart, including Stephen Vogt, who is on the 10-day injured list.

Friday, April 29th
Owen White, RHP, Rangers (High-A Hickory): 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R/ER, 0 BB, 9 K.
Long delayed by injury, White is looking promising already at full health. Expect Texas to promote the 22-year-old quickly if he continues performing at this level, as injuries have delayed his reps but clearly not sapped his talent.

Kyle Nicolas, RHP, Pirates (Double-A Altoona): 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R/ER, 0 BB, 6 K.

Saturday, April 30th
Shea Langeliers, C, Athletics (Triple-A Las Vegas): 2-5, 2 HR.

Sunday, May 1st
Triston Casas, 1B, Red Sox (Triple-A Worcester): 2-4, 2B, HR, BB, K.

Catcher: Shea Langeliers, Las Vegas Aviators (Triple-A)
Athletics No. 2, MLB No. 57
.333/.482/.905, 6 G, 7-for-21, 4 HR, 9 RBI, 6 R, 5 BB, 4 K

For the second straight week, Langeliers claims the catcher spot on the Prospect of the Week squad, and his performance during this period may have been even more impressive than his last. The backstop doubled his home run total from a week ago and more than doubled his RBIs as Las Vegas took four out of six, including the last three, from visiting Tacoma. After going 0-for-4 in the opener, Langeliers notched a single hit in his next three days, homering twice, and then posted back-to-back two-hit performances on Saturday and Sunday, belting a pair of homers in the former. Entering play on April 19, the 24-year-old was the owner of a .226/.333/.548 slash line. Since then, Langeliers has bumped his numbers to .316/.422/.711 through 21 contests, mashing nine homers and driving in 21.

OF: Matt Wallner, Wichita Wind Surge (Double-A)
Twins No. 11
.368/.500/.895, 6 G, 7-for-19, 3 HR, 1 2B, 5 RBI, 5 R, 5 BB, 8 K

After his team dropped its series opener on Tuesday, Wallner helped lead the way as Wichita grabbed five straight victories to wrap the week. The Southern Miss product put up his biggest performance on Saturday when he hammered two homers, drove in three and scored three runs in the Wind Surge’s 9-4 win at Arkansas. The 39th overall pick in the 2019 Draft, Wallner’s power has started to surface over the last 10 days. The outfielder started the season mired in a 3-for-41 slump but has been on a tear over his last seven games, going 9-for-23 with all but one of his extra-base hits for the year. He’s also started to command the strike zone better, working five walks from Wednesday through Friday while striking out just three times in those games.

10. Kyle Harrison, LHP, Giants
Team: High-A Eugene (Northwest)
Age: 20

Why He’s Here: 0-0, 2.25, 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 11 SO, 0 HR

The Scoop: Harrison’s 2021 season was mighty impressive, and his stuff played well both via the eye test and analytically. He entered the year needing to tighten his command and control, however, and the early results are promising. He’s whiffed 32 hitters so far this season—a mark which places him second in the NWL behind only Everett’s Adam Macko—exactly half of the 64 he’s faced over four starts. Put another way, Harrison has gotten 45 outs this season, 32 of which have come via strikeout. (JN)

11. Shea Langeliers, C, Athletics
Team: Triple-A Las Vegas (Pacific Coast)
Age: 24

Why He’s Here: .333/.482/.905 (7-for-21), 6 R, 4 HR, 9 RBIs, 5 BB, 4 SO, 0-for-0 SB

The Scoop: The top prospect the A’s acquired from the Braves in the Matt Olson trade, Langeliers is greatly enjoying the hitter-friendly confines of Las Vegas. He reached base in every game last week and finished on a five-game hitting streak. That included a two-homer game on April 30, a continuation of the power show he has put on early this season. Langeliers has nine home runs in only 21 games this year—all coming at Las Vegas. (KG)

Antoine Kelly, LHP, Brewers: The Brewers may be building another budding pitching development success story. Kelly was the club's second-round pick in 2019 out of Wabash Valley (Ill.) JC. He set a career high in strikeouts last night as he fanned 10 High-A Fort Wayne hitters while allowing only one hit and one walk in five scoreless innings.

Antoine Kelly, LHP, Milwaukee Brewers (High-A Wisconsin): 5 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 1 BB, 10 K.

Kelly looks to be getting back to form after thoracic outlet syndrome surgery limited him to just 19 innings last year. He’s a big, hard throwing lefty with a potential wipeout slider. Control has been an issue at times during his career but if it can improve, Kelly will be an arm to watch in the organization.

•Triston Casas (22), 1B, Triple-A Worcester | Boston Red Sox | Prospect Rank: 16 (overall); 1 (organizational)| April 29-May 5: 8-for-22, HR, 4 2B, 2 BB

It’s just a matter of time before Casas and Jarren Duran, who are both off to terrific starts in Triple-A, are getting regular playing time in the big leagues. The only question is whether the Red Sox would pull the plug on “Bobby Dalbec, starting 1B” or “Jackie Bradley Jr., Part II” first. Based on how things are going in Boston — Dalbec has already lost playing time to Franchy Cordero; Bradley is slashing .200/.268/.293 — it could be both very soon.

But, at least for now, Duran is expected to join the team on Friday with Enrique Hernández likely to land on the COVID-19 IL. There’s a chance he stays, even when Hernández returns. Maybe not. As for Casas, he’s the type of elite prospect who teams don’t like to promote until they know they’ll be up for good.

Unlike Dalbec, who has struck out in over 35% of his plate appearances over three big league seasons, Casas is the type of hitter who should be able to make adjustments and hold his own against major league pitching. He has 25 walks and 33 strikeouts in 155 Triple-A plate appearances, dating back to last season, while also showing some power to all fields. He has seven doubles and five homers in 2022, including this one that left the yard in a hurry.

Wallner shows out in DH sweep (May 6)
Matt Wallner enjoyed quite the performance in Double-A Wichita’s doubleheader sweep of Tulsa. The No. 11 prospect combined for two home runs, two doubles, seven RBIs and 13 total bases across two games.

The 24-year-old smacked a three-run homer on a liner 108 mph off the bat to right in the Wind Surge's 7-2 Game 1 win before really turning on the jets in the 10-0 Game 2 win. He opened up the scoring with a 113 mph solo homer to right-center, his sixth of the year, on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the second. He led off the fourth frame with a double to left before knocking in a run with another two-bagger, this time to right, in the following inning. He added a two-run single to right as part of an eight-run bottom of the sixth to cap off his night.

The lefty slugger is slashing .243/.353/.543 with 13 walks and 19 RBIs in 20 games.

RHP: Taj Bradley, Montgomery Biscuits (Double-A)
Rays No. 3, MLB No. 72
0-0, 0.90 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 10 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 12 K, 0.30 WHIP

In the Minor Leagues’ new era of, generally, one start per week for rotation members, Bradley got the ball twice during our award period and made the most of his time on the hill Tuesday and Sunday against visiting Biloxi. In his first outing of the week, the righty yielded one run on one hit, a solo homer by MLB’s No. 96 overall prospect, Milwaukee’s Joey Wiemer. Otherwise, Bradley was nearly perfect, issuing a walk and striking out seven. Five days later, he was even better. Bradley surrendered just one single in five scoreless innings, striking out five without a walk. The 2018 fifth-round pick’s week came as a strong rebound from his lone rough outing of the season so far. After giving up just two runs on 10 hits over 14 innings through his first three starts, Bradley was touched up for six tallies (five earned) on six hits over four innings on April 27 against Mississippi. His two starts against the Shuckers dropped Bradley’s ERA to 2.57 through six appearances this year.
