Draft slots

As you guys can probably tell, I'm with Jake that simpler is usually better, and I also think that rules for the sake of rules tend to be bad things.

I'd like for us to vote on just removing draft slots altogether. I believe that they were initially added to appease Bren anyway, because he likes to draft and doesn't like the minor league FA signing process otherwise. People won't be forced to make their 4th and 5th draft choices, but I don't think that that is a bad thing. We can all build our rosters using our preferred style.

Additionally, this will remove all of the unnecessary headaches caused by trying to police draft slots (granted, Shawn has fixed some of them) and removes the element from trade reviews.

The roster limits would be 50 total, 25 active, period.

I think I agree with this. It seems to cause more problems than good. Who cares if you have Kyle Davies or some 17 year old Latino player, really? I certainly don't.

I have a couple concerns with this.

This discussion should perhaps be discussed at the same time as draft pick trading, because you if we take away the roster requirements, I think it's going to be hard to stop draft pick trading again. Unless the purpose of this would be to essentially penalize those who decide to skip the draft.

How exactly are we going to go about doing this? I don't think it's something that should be done midseason, perhaps at the beginning of the offseason?

I'd be very curious to see how the league views the requirement (maybe just some individual Q&A) before deciding to remove what I think is considered a major rule.

I agree. There would need to be a league wide discussion first before any type of action were taken with us. It is a pretty major rule and would probably need to be implemented in the offseason, logically right around the draft time I would think.

Agreed. I'm inclined to believe that roster size is a slippery slope, but on the other hand some guys are drafted who are 5 years away and it sucks to burn real roster spots on them. Maybe a rule like the 10 "draft spots" are used for guys who haven't appeared in the majors by the beginning of that season or are under 25 or something like that? Keeps the spirit without the specificity. That being said, I think that what ever rule we make if we simply are vigilant about making people keep their OOPSS draft status updated then roster rules become a hell of a lot simpler to follow and enforce.

I agree, and one of the nice things, if we were to decide to go the route of eliminating draft slots, is that there would really be no enforcement required. Shawn has everything completely built in the OOPSS to enforce it, and we wouldn't have any headaches with the DB, because the whole "did he ever make the player active or not" issue is void.

First, I agree that this revision should occur after the next IBC World Series.

Second, I think it should be simple:

1. Roster size is a maximum of 50 players of which no fewer then 10 and no more then 25 players may be "farmed" (or "0") players who are not in the current year SIM dbase. If a team has less then 10 farmed players the team takes a corresponding limit on their maximum roster size. (Example: a team with only 5 farmed players has a maximum roster size of 45 ...)
2. A team must have a minimum of 25 and a maximum of 40 players in the SIM dbase. (Example: a team must have 25 players in the current SIM dbase and may have up to an additional 25 farmed players ...)
3. A team must have a minimum of 25 active players who are in the current SIM dbase and not on the DL. If a team goes below this 25 player minimum because a player goes on the DL, that team's GM has 24 hours from the publication of the DL notice to correct his roster (i.e., pick up an appropriate free agent or make a trade) or his team will deemed to have an illegal roster and forfeit his team's games until his roster is legal.

Again, I really don't think just using who made or didn't make the DB is a fair distinction, too many random low-A guys make it.
