Drafting for GMless teams

Post by Marlins »

Ok, starting a new thread. Putting some urgency on this as last year some GMs used the excuse that it was too close to the draft to enact, so would prefer to get something out to the league to prevent that complaint.

I propose we use the below list to draft for GM-less teams. To tie up all loose ends, we show this list to the league, update the list on 3/1 at start of the draft to take out any intl players who did not sign by 3/1 (thus not eligible). I can also extend the official list out to 150 names by adding players per actual draft order (or, to keep with BA rankings, their top 500 draft prospects list) to the end of the below list, so there will never be any question about who a GM-less team will draft up through 5 rounds. However, please note last year at the end of the IBC draft there remained players available on this BA list that were not drafted, so this is purely a contingency and to keep people from finding any excuse to basically keep having the "skip" pick in place for the GMless teams. The last thing we should want is frustration of a new GM seeing the picks their team had wasted while everyone else just recently added better players.

Here's the full list that could be posted. Note, this is the top 100 from the above link plus an additional 55 players highest ranked by draft order, confirmed signed. (the guys starting in the 101+ range are the ones in past system would most likely be stuck on GM-less teams starting in 2nd or 3rd...)

I'm okay with using a list rather than the actual draft results. This one looks good, are there any others to consider?

I think BP also puts out a list like this as well, but havent seen it yet. I know no list is perfect, but at the same time, any list is 10x better than what we have used in the past.

I think the key here is to get this list out to everyone asap so everyone has plenty of time to prepare, which seemed to somehow be a concern when I brought this up last year.

Anyone have a preference? I think the key is just getting something out asap, whichever we use.

I like the list you compiled Nils (and appreciate the effort) ... I would like to see BP's complete list and see if this group wants to edit your list slightly based on a BP inclusion or reasoning ... still think we can get an agreed upon list out very soon.

We could just do a composite ranking of the two lists (i.e. average the rankings from the two lists, sort by the avg rank for each player). That would also bring the list beyond 100 names as there are likely to be some guys on one list and not the other. The list of guys at the end by draft order would be shorter (assuming we still want up to 150 names listed).

I'd be fine working up the sheet to composite the two rankings together once the full BP list out.

Here's how the start of the composite would look:

Avg Ranking Player Pos Team
1.5 Marcelo Mayer SS BOS
2.5 Seiya Suzuki OF —
3.5 Jordan Lawlar SS ARI
4 Brady House SS WAS
4 Kahlil Watson SS MIA
4.5 Sal Frelick OF MIL
6.5 Jack Leiter RHP TEX
7 Henry Davis C PIT
7.5 Colton Cowser OF BAL
9 Matt McLain SS CIN
9.5 Colson Montgomery 3B CWS
12 James Triantos 3B CHC
14 Jay Allen OF CIN
14.5 Harry Ford C SEA
15.5 Trey Sweeney SS NYY
15.5 Jackson Jobe RHP DET
16.5 James Wood OF SD
23 Will Bednar RHP SF

Ties I've broken by using BA rank.

Ok I have just spent over an hour compiling this list, which I hope we can all agree on as final and post to the rest of the league. BP's full top 100 is out. The list below ranks players 1-80 based on the average of their BA and BP ranks (ties default to BA rank), players 81-120 are players on one list or the other, ranked by where they each rank on their respective lists (again, tied to BA rank), then players 121-150 simply based on draft rank. As I previously mentioned, when I checked these BA and BP lists based on if all the guys ranked in their top 100s got actually drafted, there always were a few stragglers on each list that didnt get drafted in IBC With this list now up to 120 players total combined between the two, I seriously doubt we will get to the part of the list where players are ranked by draft order. However, I included that so there is zero chance of any confusion on who would be drafted. Also, including up to 150 as there may be some GMs who didnt use these lists or didnt know about these lists before when drafting and with this list now public knowledge, I expect more of these guys to be taken.

TLDR: Basically making this list the default rankings list like in a Yahoo fantasy draft. GM doesnt show up for the draft (or there is no GM), they get best available off this list.

Thanks for compiling the list ... I vote in favor of publishing it and using it to draft for Toronto if we don't have a new owner by the time the IBC draft starts.

That is three in favor.

Also, how does this work? If exco votes this in, does it just get put in place or does it need to go to a league vote?

JP can clarify, but operational/policy changes are typically handled by exco. Kind of the purpose of the group.

Correct, that's the point of ExCo. If that's what we decide to do, then that's what we do.
