Season Delay
We'd better figure out now how we're going to get the season going properly, I think that is worth the ExCo's time a good bit more than this trade. I think it might be fun to start the season with a little showcase doubleheader between me and Bren (weren't we able to let the league watch the World Series last year somehow?) and then the next day start simming 2 days at a time until we're caught up. I think that the best way to handle injuries is to largely ignore them until we've caught up to the MLB calender, guys like Josh Johnson (thanks JP) who are on MLB DL's Opening Day are out for the SIM period, guys who get hurt during that time and are healthy by the time it ends stay activated, guys who get hurt and are still out long term go down when we've caught up and resume normal league activity.
This is just a starting point for discussion, but let's get something hammered out quickly so that we don't let the problem sneak up on us.

It IS more important, but it's also less within our control. We have very little choice but to wait. We can decide what to do once April 4th rolls around, but until that day, we can't really DO anything.
I believe there was also some debate last season about how to handle injuries THIS season. That is something we should bring up as well.

We can absolutely control how we're going to handle our simming and the projection free agents and all of that. The disc is coming April 4th, the MLB season begins March 25th. Watch this, here's a proposed schedule to get us on track:
Fri April 4th - Projection discs released, signing freeze, all players on waivers
Sat April 5th - 11:59 PM deadline for projection free agent waiver claims, signing freeze lifts at that time.
Sun April 6th - A's vs. Red Sox opens the IBC season (both games played)
Mon April 7th - General IBC Opening Day Sim MLB March 31-April 1
Tue April 8th - Sim MLB April 2-3
Wed April 9th - Sim MLB April 4-5
Thu April 10th - Sim MLB April 6-7
Fri April 11 - Sim MLB April 8-9
Sat April 12 - Sim MLB 10-11
Sun April 13 - Sim MLB April 12-13
And we're all caught up. Sooner we get this or something like it proposed to the league and start the discussion about injuries and whatnot the less bitching there will be that will actually interfere with the season.

I don't really see the point of making a thing out of the opening series, we should just start simming ASAP. We can still (maybe) play those games head to head, but there's no reason we can't have boxes for 3/31 and 4/1 out that same day. Actually. As long as we continue on the weekly DL system, we should be able to sim that whole first week on that first day.

There's nothing really that you can do.
If you look at this thread: http://ibc.poweralleycircuit.com/viewtopic.php?t=84 you'll see what we had to do last year. I'll just need some help pouring through that generated file to make sure that all player name, date of birth, etc changes were made correctly and that there are no duplicate players out there.
If you want to do anything now, you could go through the list of 0-, 6- etc players that either saw MLB time last year or are expected to this year, so that we can go through and check that they for sure were modified successfully and are not duplicated.

See Bren, now we've got some discussion. I like the idea of making our opening series a happening because it is separated from the real life MLB calender and because people get into Opening Day things and its an opportunity for trash talk and all that. That being said, its only a day, not going to go to the wall for it. Your suggestion about simming a week in a day is a possibility too, though I like going more incrementally because it allows you to follow the action more closely and it really doesn't put us that much farther behind, plus simming a week in a day would give us DBs midweek as opposed to putting them on a normal weekend rotation.

I'll get back to you when I get a chance.
I'll get back to you when I get a chance.
Ok, a few things....
1. Jake, I think you misunderstood my earlier post. I wasn't suggesting nothing be done, simply that what needs to be done isn't imminent and is therefore less urgent.
2. The OOPSS updating really isn't necessary for simming. In fact, it has no effect on the sim at all unless Shawn has developed a method of automatically updating the sim d-base using the current OOPSS d-base and I'm pretty sure he hasn't (though I dearly wish it were possible). It's an important thing to get done, but it won't get us simming any faster.
3. I wasn't actually looking at a calendar for days of the week, but you're right about which day of the week mattering.
4. Here is what needs to happen in order to get us simming as quickly as possible (pardon the tone if I get a little pedagogical, but I've had to go through the process several times in the past, that also might be why it seems less urgent or problematical to me).
I. We need an updated database using a system that includes DMB's Unique Player ID's, this means last season's season disk or the last projection disk. Probably the projection disk since it uses more players. If ZIPS uses the UID's then we can use an up-to-date version of the winter league database but I'm not sure if they do.
II. that database is migrated into a database that uses the 2008 projections. We can't do this until the disk comes out obviously. There are some adjustments to be made to the database, but they're fairly minor (i.e. Era settings).
III. every single roster needs to be checked to make sure any new players in the projection database who weren't in the system last year are assigned to the right teams. This task sucks and can't be done until the disk comes out. What we can do beforehand however is divide up that work among a group of GM's so that it is done as quickly as possible and all the lists are then forwarded to one person to update the database. the lists should be formatted by team.
i.e.
BOS - Josh Donaldson
BOS - Michael Bowden
BOS - Caleb Gindl
A list showing players in some order (i.e. alphabetical) then what team they need to go onto is a pain in the ass to work with.
The soonest I can see this being done is within 24 hours of the database coming out. The more GM's the work is divided between the sooner each GM can finish, but it also makes it more likely that the process will be held up by a single GM.
IV. once this is done we can send the database out to the league for them to send rosters back in. Setting a deadline for GM's to do this of under 24 hours would probably be unrealistic as GM's are going to want to tinker, look at projections, etc.
Once rosters are in, we can start to sim, so 48 hours from release is probably the soonest we can probably expect to start simming.
5. DMB is not great about keeping their own deadlines. in fact, they're kind of terrible about it and i wouldn't count on having a projection disk on 4/4. We should plan for 4/4 but there's a chance that won't happen.
6. The feasibility of daily databases depends on what is meant by daily databases. Could the database be uploaded every day to the website after simming along with boxes? Absolutely, there's no reason that can't happen and I believe he and I were working on that last year. If it's more along the lines of daily transactions, then that's entirely different and, IMO, is not quite feasible at this point. But that may be a discussion for another day.
