A few off the top of my head. It'd take me a while to whittle to 7. Watched Heartbreak Ridge a couple times on AMC the last few days, so maybe that's swaying me right now.

A-Z

American Beauty
Blade Runner
Cool Hand Luke
Dirty Dozen
Enter the Dragon
Full Metal Jacket
Silence of the Lambs
The Usual Suspects

Also a shout out to the underrated Death Hunt with Charles Bronson, Lee Marvin, Angie Dickenson, and the immortal Carl Weathers. Half Baked also. What can I say, Harlan Williams makes me laugh.

Man, I remember when you saw that. You came home and were scared and started talking to me about it when I had a corn field directly across the road from my bedroom, and so I got freaked out. Next time you're up here, we're going UFO hunting.

My Top 7 right now, and it'll probably be changed by tonight. I'm not going to list 1-7, just throwing 7 down.

The Searchers
Midnight Run
The Alamo(Billy Bob Thornton version)
Anchorman
The Godfather
El Dorado with John Wayne and Robert Mitchum
Wyatt Earp

There's about 8 or 9 more I want to list. So many westerns right now since that's what the novel I'm working on is

by Phillies
Gangs of New York
Blood Diamond
Old School
Shawshank
Sin City
Billy Madison
Inside Man

Top movies lists are tough because there are a few trilogies I'd rank with my favorite movies, but probably none of the films individually would be in my top 5 or 10. Top trilogies:

1. Indiana Jones
2. The Godfather
3. Star Wars
4. The Man with No Name (Sergio Leone's Spaghetti westerns w/ Eastwood)

Trilogies count as one...

So in other words, you could list Matrix+
the point is to show the different movies you like...Naming all 3 matrix movies would be redundant.

No specific order and the list changes daily:

Shawshank Redemption (the one constant on my list)
Memento
Almost Famous
L.A. Confidential
The Prestige
The Sting
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Posted: Mon Feb 18, 2008 8:28 pm
by Dodgers
Indiana Jones
Star Wars
Field of Dreams
Antitrust
Gangs of New York
Office Space
Saving Private Ryan

Posted: Mon Feb 18, 2008 9:29 pm
by Rangers
Shawshank
Godfathers
Goodfellas
Usual Suspects
The Departed
Airplanes
Wedding Crashers

If I had to list the movies that are most likely to get me to sit down and watch them again, the Star Wars and LOTR trilogies probably belong.

A pet peeve of mine as a history teacher as of May, well I am now since I'm student teaching but I won't have the piece of paper saying I can teach till May. A generation of school children are growing up thinking the 54th Massachusetts played an important part in the Civil War. In the grand scheme of things, they didn't do anything. They were involved in the skirmish on James Island, got destroyed at Fort Wagner and then lost to militia at Honey Hill, when 5,000 Union troops were defeated by 1500 Confederate militia. 786 Union casualties, 8 Confederate casualties.

There's just so many great movies about this era and unfortunatly this one is the one people think of most. Its an entertaining movie, but students should be watching Ride With the Devil, Gods and Generals or Gettysburg, not this

Okay my rant is done

I don't agree that Glory tries to paint the 54th as having had any extraordinary military impact on the war as a whole. It does probably glorify the regiment's few engagements, particularly with regard to their battlefield prowess, but the fact that the film closes with a note as to how the attack on Wagner failed indicates the filmmakers had the proper perspective. They do indicate that the raising of African-American troops played a major role in Union victory, which there is probably some debate over. Either way, it was a great movie.

The two adaptations of the Shaara books didn't do much for me. Gettysburg was pretty good - for a TV movie - but could have been better (like if it was a real movie). I thought Gods and Generals was downright awful. I don't think I even finished watching it, and I had high hopes for it since I liked the book.
