The Helio Sequence - The Helio Sequence... They dropped this on the 12th, and I didn't give it a whirl until now because I've been dealing with the plague spreading through my house for the last 10 days.

But this is another awesome 2 piece that I'm fond of. Saw them open up for Keane here in Denver a handful of years back and shelled out for their album at the show. They're quite a bit different than a 2 piece like Local H/White Stripes/Royal Blood.. I believe they're out of the northwest. Favorite album is their 2008 album "Keep Your Eyes Ahead". But the new one is very good. Just a couple of really solid musicians.

Saw Royal Blood live last night at the Fox Theatre in Boulder. It was.. amazing. Not a long show, obviously, as its a tour for the debut album. But these guys are blowing up. Very, very, very good live show.

Sam Doores and Riley Downing could've gone the troubadour route, singing solitary songs and traveling alone, unencumbered. The two singer-songwriters met at Woodyfest, after all, the annual celebration of Woody Guthrie. Doores had already taken to heart Guthrie's self-mythologizing in Bound For Glory and tried to retrace some of his hero's nomadic, train-hopping steps. But Downing and Doores, along with Cameron Snyder, Dan Cutler and John James Tourville, would rather do their rambling collectively, as The Deslondes.

When they banded together in New Orleans, the fivesome was profoundly influenced by the Big Easy's live music scene. There they became that most cooperative of outfits: the down-home dance band, whose performances revolve around achieving the right vibe and whose success is measured by a capacity to draw bodies onto the dance floor.

Country music is ostensibly what The Deslondes are playing on their self-titled New West debut (due out June 9), but it's country that seems like it never parted ways with Guthrie's populist strains of folk, or felt threatened by rock 'n' roll's youthful ruckus. Like their sometime tourmate, Alynda Lee Segarra of Hurray For the Riff Raff, the Deslondes are knowledgeable about multiple streams of American roots music. Downing even specifies in the band's bio that the traffic jam-themed rockabilly number "Less Honkin', More Tonkin'" was inspired not just by George Jones recordings in general, but Jones' early Starday sides, specifically.

But fastidious revivalists The Deslondes are not. Their tradition-tweaking testimonies to restless inclinations and precarious attachments shamble and shuffle, swing and bop, slip and slide, straining familiar forms at the seams, yielding something energized, elegant and new. Fitting then, that the album opens with Downing drawling, "I never knew all the things that I could do. No one told me when I was young. But now that I know, I'm raring to go."

Holy crap this album is good. Aside from 1 track I didn't care for, but wasn't the worst thing I've ever heard, top to bottom this is a wonderful album.

Always brings up both good and bad memories from my teen years... My first "love" gave this album to me for my 15th birthday... we soon broke up after... Album makes me think of my formative years and where I've come from.. Its been a long road.. That said, its a pinnacle Radiohead album for me. The perfect blend of when they really started forming their own identity and when they still had a bit of 'pop' in em. After this of course, came the monumental and conceptual OK Computer.. But the Bends is top to bottom, for me, exceptional as it really starts to show their transition into the band they'd become...

Filter - The Amalgamut

From 2002... highly underrated album IMO. But maybe the last really solid Filter offering.. I think after this one, Richard Patrick got sober.

Fun fact, Richard Patrick(frontman of Filter) is the brother of Robert Patrick, the T2000 of Terminator 2 fame.

Richard Patrick of Filter formed a 'super group' with the DeLeo brother's of STP shortly after Weiland had formed his own(of "Velvet Revolver" acclaim). This album was produced by Bob Ezrin - who did Pink Floyd's "The Wall". It was the group's only effort and kind of fell flat and didn't sell to expectations.

A pretty solid album all around, but by the time this album came about in 2006 I think there was a 'lull' in rock n roll. It was all about the budding indy/alt rock scene and this album just never charted the way it anticipated. If you've heard of this band, kudos.. you know some obscure trivia.

Brothers in Arms by Dire Straits, yes I know it is from 1985 but I've been listening to it a ton lately and every song is different. You go from The Walk of Life to Money for Nothing to Why Worry and Ride Across the River. But Mark Knoppfler is awesome so hey

Mark Knoppfler is a guitar god and musical genius. One of my favorite bands..

DJ Kicks by DJ Koze.. pretty amazing album, nothing what you'd expect. Very well rounded, chill sound. Lots of featured artists, including William Shatner.. This one is a good listen.

On my 2nd listen.

Lots of influences on this one.. Soul, Motown, Hip Hop, and all Electronic based. A whole lot of weird. And it works. One of the better albums I've listened to this year. Def. check it.
