FWIW - I believe you did the right thing "blindly" polling the league.
Had I been around to vote I would have voted against it as I think he should have sat out the remainder of the year and then been reconsidered for next season if he was still interested ... but other then this post I'll keep my thoughts to myself as it is a moot point.
