Chris Denorfia, a leading candidate to make the roster, needs “Tommy John” surgery and will miss six months of the season.

“(Trainer) Mark Mann and Doc (Kremchek) recommended an MRI,” Reds general manager Wayne Krivsky said. “Our worst fears were confirmed.”

Denorfia injured his right elbow Friday making a throw to home in a game in St. Petersburg with Tampa Bay. The injury at first wasn’t believed to be serious.
