Going to start listing some new prospect notes for the Rays

https://www.baseballprospectus.com/pros ... -the-hype/

ZAC VEEN, OF, COLORADO ROCKIES (LOW-A FRESNO)
Drafted by the Rockies with the ninth-overall selection of the 2020 draft, the 19-year-old outfielder opens his first professional season as the organization’s top ranked prospect. Listed at 6-foot-4 and 190 pounds, the teenage Floridian is a long-limbed athlete who can affect a ballgame in a variety of ways.

After a slow start to his inaugural pro campaign, Veen’s offensive production has improved in recent weeks. While his lengthy physique can promote a loopy, inefficient swing, he’s demonstrated the body awareness and bat control needed to consistently and effectively strike the baseball. He utilizes the opposite field well, driving the ball gap-to-gap with a balanced, middle-of-the-field approach. Veen has yet to homer in 136 AB but his 12 extra-base hits hint at the latent natural power to develop with maturity. His 35 percent strikeout rate is a result of the elongated swing, but his .372 OBP points to his advanced plate awareness and pitch selection.

Veen’s defensive prowess and baserunning contributions further add value to his game. His Low-A West leading 20 stolen bases are a product of his instincts and aggressiveness on the basepaths. He plays an above-average corner outfield, utilizing long strides to cover ample ground and an accurate throwing arm to thwart overzealous baserunners. Ultimately, the progression of Veen’s hit tool will be the crucial factor in his development and path to the big leagues. His athleticism and aptitude could make him a vital piece of the Rockies lineup as early as 2023. —Brandon Williams

BRYCE JARVIS, RHP, ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS (DOUBLE-A AMARILLO)
Recently promoted from High-A Hillsboro to Double-A Amarillo, Jarvis is the best pitching prospect in the Diamondbacks system. He has a modern pitching approach and many of the characteristics prized by talent evaluators. He was one of the biggest risers in his 2020 draft class, but his pro debut a year later has been a slightly mixed bag.

The Duke product has a fastball that worked 92-95 in my looks while he was with the Hops, focused up in the zone to get the most from his over-the-top release that generates plus spin and ride. He’s maintained his velocity well, holding steady at 93-94 the entire seventh inning in his best start of the year up in Everett. Both his changeup (low-80s) and his slider (upper-80s) tunnel well, and Jarvis locates them with decent consistency below the zone. The slider was most effective in my looks, with a steep 11-5 break that falls off the table to draw chases once Jarvis gets ahead with his heater. Getting ahead is vital for Jarvis, because his off-speed seemed less well-suited to stealing strikes. That can leave him vulnerable to aggressive fastball hitters, and despite showing plus command in college, he’s been less efficient with his pitches thus far as a pro.

Jarvis works with great pace, a trait that feeds his tools when he’s commanding the ball well, putting opponents on their back foot and controlling the flow of the game. His delivery reflects this as well, with each stage of the motion—step, set, leg lift, hands break, landing, follow-through—coming at breakneck speed. For the moment, the 6-foot-2 righty seems not quite as consistent in repeating this delivery from one start to the next, and he needs his command pinpoint for the rest of the profile to thrive. If he can lock in his fastball command with regularity, the rest will fall into line well enough, but right now there’s a little less accuracy than guys working in his velo range can afford. —John Trupin

Jesse Franklin, OF, High-A Rome (Braves) — Franklin played center field for the first time this season for High-A Rome. It didn’t affect his play at the plate--he hit his 11th home run of the season, his 12th double and a single as well.

12. Jesse Franklin, OF, Braves
Team: High-A Rome (East)
Age: 22

Why He’s Here: .381/.440/1.408 (8-for-21), 5 R, 3 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 11 RBIs, 3 BB, 7 SO.

The Scoop: Franklin’s awful May is but a distant memory now. The Braves’ third-round pick out of Michigan in 2020 hit only .200/.228/.253 in May. He figured out High-A East in June, hitting .338/.412/.757. And now at the start of July, he’s hitting like he wants a promotion to Double-A Mississippi. Franklin is hitting .467/.529/1.267 in July. (JC)

14. Bryce Jarvis, RHP, D-backs
Team: Double-A Amarillo (Central)
Age: 23

Why He’s Here: 1-0, 1.13, 7 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 11 SO

The Scoop: The D-backs promoted Jarvis to Double-A on June 22, and he made his first home start at hitter-friendly Amarillo on Saturday. The 2020 first-round pick handled the difficult conditions masterfully, tossing seven dominant innings to give the Sod Poodles a 4-1 win over Wichita. Jarvis opened the game by striking out three of his first four batters, had eight strikeouts through five innings and finished his outing with a punchout and a grounder back to the pitcher. Jarvis has a 3.58 ERA through 10 starts this season, a solid debut for the No. 18 pick in last year’s draft. (KG)

15. Curtis Mead, 3B, Rays
Team: Low-A Charleston (East)
Age: 20

Why He’s Here: .414/.452/.793 (12-for-29), 7 R, 2 2B, 3 HR, 6 RBIs, 2 BB, 4 SO, 2 SB.

The Scoop: Thanks to the lost 2020 season, it’s easy to have forgotten about Mead. The Rays acquired him from the Phillies in a trade that sent LHP Cristopher Sanchez to Philadelphia in November 2019. But with no 2020 season, Mead had to wait until this spring to make his full-season debut. He’s had quite the debut. Mead is working on a 11-game hitting streak and he had both a four-hit and a three-hit game this week. Overall his .358 average is second best in Low A East. His .589 slugging percentage is sixth-best in the league and he leads in hits (68) and doubles (21), and is second in extra-base hits (29) and total bases (112). (JC)

DIEGO CARTAYA, C/1B, LOS ANGELES DODGERS (LOW-A RANCHO CUCAMONGA)
A bat-first catcher, Cartaya joined the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in late May and has lived up to the billing by putting up a .295/.409/.600 line through 127 plate appearances. He has an advanced approach at the plate; showcasing strong strike zone recognition and pitch selection for a 19-year-old, though there is a good bit of swing and miss as he continues to get accustomed to quality breaking stuff. He generates easy raw power that plays in-game, which should result in a middle-of-the-order 25-30 home run bat.

There are some questions on the defensive side of the ball, where the arm is an asset but he has stiff hands and struggles to consistently block balls in the dirt due to his size. The emergence of an electronic strike zone would solve half of those and significantly improve his odds of sticking behind the dish, but the bat would play at first base should he ultimately need to move there. There’s a good bit of risk/variance, but also significant upside if he can stick behind the plate. —Trevor Andrese

Jesse Franklin, High-A Rome (Braves)—Franklin, the Braves' midseason minor league player of the year, has been excellent in his pro debut and added two more hits, including a two-run homer, on Wednesday. The 2020 third-rounder has a .268/.332/.571 slash line with 15 home runs, 36 RBIs and 15 stolen bases.

Nolan Gorman, Triple-A Memphis (Cardinals)—Gorman on Wednesday turned in his first three-hit game since arriving at the Triple-A level on June 29. The 21-year-old third baseman hit a homer and drove in three while raising his slash line to .264/.328/.455 with 12 homers and 32 RBIs.

Zac Veen, OF, Rockies (Low-A Fresno): 5-6, HR, 2 BB, K, CS, HBP.
In Saturday’s doubleheader, Veen continued to race around the field and stabilize his offensive numbers as he adjusts to big league ball. The power started slower than the rest of the package, but is catching up quickly.

Nolan Gorman, 3B, Cardinals (Triple-A Memphis): 3-5, 2 HR.
This weekend was a brilliant one for Gorman, who had struggled to barrel the ball up as well in his first dozen or so games in Triple-A. The 21 year old keeps thumping.

Jasson Dominguez, OF, Yankees (Low-A Tampa): 2-4, HR, BB, K.

2. Zac Veen, OF, Rockies
Team: Low-A Fresno (West)
Age: 19

Why He’s Here: .667/.750/1.556 (12-for-18), 12 R, 1 2B, 5 HR, 14 RBIs, 5 BB, 3 SO, 1 SB, 2 CS

The Scoop: After taking about two weeks to find his footing in the Low-A West league, Veen has been a very steady performer. He’s shown his hitting ability and has gotten on-base at an impressive clip. But this past week was the one where he shifted gears from being a productive hitter to a dominant one. Veen came into the week with four home runs. He left it with nine. He came into the week with two three-hit games this season. This week he had a three-hit game and a four-hit performance. Away from Fresno, Veen is now hitting .305/.429/.525. He’s showing signs of being the middle-of-the-lineup force he has been projected to be. (JC)

13. Nolan Gorman, 3B, Cardinals
Team: Triple-A Memphis (West)
Age: 21

Why He’s Here: .375/.464/.917 (9-for-24), 6 R, 1 2B, 0 3B, 4 HR, 10 RBIs, 4 BB, 4 SO

The Scoop: Even with a season lost to the pandemic, Gorman has zoomed to Triple-A. He reached the level in just 231 games. That’s faster than any high schooler from the first five rounds of the 2018 draft class other than Mariners prospect Jarred Kelenic. So far, so good for Gorman at the minors’ highest level. He’s already collected a pair of three-hit games with Memphis, and four of his first 13 hits have left the yard. (JN)

BRENTON DOYLE, OF, COLORADO ROCKIES (HIGH-A SPOKANE)
Selected in the fourth round in 2019 out of Shepherd University, a small Division II school in West Virginia, Doyle has put together a solid showing in the High-A West League. Listed at 6-foot-3 and 200 pounds, he has a balanced, solid, athletic build with room for good growth and shows average or better tools across the board, highlighted by his plus raw power and plus speed. In my recent viewings, the right hander stands upright and relaxed with a slightly open stance. He has a short load with some lift to his swing, which has created some swing-and-miss, specifically with breaking pitches down in the zone. Doyle’s 70 hits slot him at number four in the league; however, he’s also tallied 91 strikeouts, which currently leads. While there has been some up and down offensively, the net results have been better than average.

Projecting a future 50 hit tool, Doyle began the season hitting .280 for the month of May, followed by a Mendoza-flirting .211 for the month of June. Doyle has since regained his rhythm, posting a .303 average and .838 OPS thus far for the month of July. The strong and agile outfielder has been making slight adjustments with his stance throughout the year, opening or closing his front side a bit in an effort to better free up his hands and barrel pitches to all fields. His plus athleticism and strong hands should allow him to continue making the necessary adjustments to keep his bat path in the zone longer and reduce his strikeout rate below 30 percent.

Defensively, Doyle profiles nicely in center field; however, his plus speed, plus arm, easy actions and efficient routes allow him to fit well at any outfield position. —Kevin Johnson

Jesse Franklin, High-A Rome (Braves)—Thanks in part to an impressive first half performance in his pro debut, Franklin moved up 12 spots to No. 12 on the Braves midseason Top 30 prospects list. On Tuesday he added two more hits, including a solo home run, in a loss to Asheville. Franklin has hit 18 home runs on the season, with 10 of them coming in the month of July. The 2020 third-rounder from Michigan has 15 stolen bases in 16 attempts and a .260/.333/.570 slash line

6. Luken Baker, 1B, Cardinals
Team: Double-A Springfield (Central)
Age: 24

Why He’s Here: .304/.360/1.087 (7-for-23) 7 R, 6 HRs, 10 RBIs, 2 BB, 5 SO.

The Scoop: Baker is a slugger with all the good and bad that term brings with it. Baker’s swing will run hot and cold, but when he’s on, he’s going to put balls in the outfield stands for the fans. This week he was very much on with a pair of two-home run games and home runs in three straight games. (JC)

1B: Luken Baker, Springfield Cardinals (Double-A)
(Cardinals No. 14)
.304/.360/1.087, 6 G, 23 AB, 7 R, 7 H, 6 HR, 10 RBI, 2 BB, 5 SO

Baker’s carrying tool is definitely his power, and it was on full display this past week, with six of his seven hits reaching the seats. He hit two out on Wednesday, two more on Friday and one apiece on Saturday and Sunday. That now puts him second in the Double-A Central in both homers (21) and RBIs (54), while he’s ninth in SLG (.502).

Luken Baker, Double-A Springfield (Cardinals)—Baker this season has continued to live up to his billing as a prodigious power hitter with a below-average hit tool. On Tuesday he added two more home runs, giving him 23 on the year, and is hitting .236/.313/.528 with 59 RBIs.

https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories ... ug-4-2021/

Cardinals: Luken Baker, 1B (No. 14) Double-A Springfield
When Baker has made contact of late, the ball has most likely left the yard. Baker homered in his fourth straight game as he went 3-for-5 with two homers, a double and five RBIs. His multihomer game was his fourth this season and his five RBIs in Springfield’s 11-4 win over Tulsa matched a season high. Over his past eight games, Baker has hit nine home runs and driven in 18 runs.

Rays: Curtis Mead, 2B (No. 27), High-A Bowling Green
When it comes to getting acclimated at the next level, Mead has gotten off to a strong start. He went 3-for-3 with a homer, a double and two RBIs in the Hot Rods' 7-1 win over the Blue Rocks and has hit .315 with an .874 OPS in 24 games since getting called up from Low-A Charleston on July 6. The 20-year-old was slashing .356/.408/.586 and had hit seven homers and driven in 35 runs in 47 games with Charleston.

Jasson Dominguez, Low-A Tampa (Yankees)—Dominguez turned in a two-hit day, including hitting his second home run, in a win over Jupiter. The highly touted outfielder has struggled at times, as is expected of an 18-year-old in his first taste of full-season ball. He's hitting .269/.342/.433 with nine RBIs in 67 at-bats at Low-A.

Zac Veen, Low-A Fresno (Rockies)—The 2020 first-rounder hit just two home runs over his first two months, but collected nine in the month of July. On Thursday he hit another homer, his 12th, as part of a 3-for-4 day in a win over San Jose. The 19-year-old outfielder is putting up impressive numbers in his first pro season, with a .290/.394/.503 slash line, 57 RBIs and 29 stolen bases.

Rockies: Zac Veen, OF (MLB No. 37), Low-A Fresno
The No. 9 pick from the 2020 Draft extended his hitting streak to seven games in a big way against San Jose, going 3-for-4 and finishing the night a triple shy of the cycle. Veen started his night with a solo homer, his 13th, in the first, then hit a single and a double in his subsequent at-bats. He couldn’t get the most elusive leg of the cycle in his final at-bat, going down on strikes instead. Veen has been a thorn in the side of Low-A West pitchers, hitting .298 with a .920 OPS in his first taste of professional baseball. He also has a multihit game in each of the past five contests.

ZAC VEEN, OF, COLORADO ROCKIES (LOW-A FRESNO)
THE MULLETTED AND MUSTACHIOED 19-YEAR-OLD OUTFIELDER STRUMMED A .235 BA AND ZERO HOME RUNS THROUGH HIS FIRST 38 GAMES THIS SEASON, BUT IN THE SUBSEQUENT 40 CONTESTS VEEN HAS HIT TO THE TUNE OF .348 WITH 13 ROUND-TRIPPERS. LISTED AT 6-FOOT-4 AND 190 POUNDS, VEEN UTILIZES HIS LEAN PHYSIQUE AND LONG-LIMBS TO CREATE LEVERAGE AND SURPRISING POWER TO ALL FIELDS. ONCE IN MOTION, THE LEFT-HANDED BATTER CAUSES HAVOC BY AGGRESSIVELY STRETCHING FOR EXTRA BASES OR ATTEMPTING TO STEAL THEM, WHERE HE’S SUCCEEDED ON 30 OF 43 ATTEMPTS. HIS .398 OBP AND 46 WALKS ARE A PRODUCT OF HIS KEEN ZONE AWARENESS AND PATIENT PITCH SELECTION, MAKING HIM A DIFFICULT OUT FOR ANY PITCHER.
Defensively, Veen’s long-strides and above-average pace allow him to cover ample ground from the corner outfield positions, which will be beneficial in Colorado’s expansive outfield. Veen plays with an entertainingly frenetic energy and physicality that endear him to teammates and fans alike. While there is room for further refinement of both his offensive and defensive tools, Veen’s aptitude and passion for the game should expedite his development into an integral part of the Rockies organization. —Brandon Williams

Ivan Johnson, SS, Reds (Low-A Daytona): 3-4, 2B, HR.
Despite being a smaller, speedy switch-hitter, Johnson has a curious profile as a semi-slugger with contact challenges and great OBP. It’s a dicey route to success, especially if he can’t swipe bases at a more efficient clip, but there’s time.

Curtis Mead, High-A Bowling Green (Rays)—Mead continued his excellent debut season with the Rays with a two-hit game in a win over Greensboro. The 20-year-old hit a solo home run and doubled while driving in four. Mead, acquired in a November 2019 deal from the Phillies for lefthander Cristopher Sanchez, posted a .356/.408/.586 slash line at Low-A in 47 games to hit his way to Bowling Green. In 35 games at High-A he's hit four homers, driven in 24 runs and posted an .835 OPS.

Cardinals: Nolan Gorman, 2B/3B (MLB No. 25), Triple-A Memphis
Something about Thursdays in August brings out the best in Gorman, who reached base five times on Thursday, racking up four hits, a walk, a homer, a double and four RBIs, his eight total bases being the second-most he’s had in a single game with Memphis. Gorman’s big night was the continuation of an odd trend in which he does well in the penultimate day of the workweek. In three Thursday games this month, Gorman is 10-for-14 with two homers and five RBIs.

8. Nolan Gorman, 3B, Cardinals
Team: Triple-A Memphis (East)
Age: 21

Why He’s Here: .474/.600/.842 (9-for-19), 8 R, 1 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBIs, 6 BB, 4 SO

The Scoop: Gorman needed time to adjust after being promoted to Triple-A at the end of June but has been on fire the last five weeks. The 2018 first-round pick has hit .324/.385/.556 with seven doubles, a triple and eight homers in his last 36 games and was particularly locked in last week. Gorman reached base in 15 of his 25 plate appearances in the Redbirds’ series against Nashville, including three multi-hit efforts in his final four games. (KG)

Zac Veen, OF, Low-A Fresno (Rockies)—Veen has been red hot in the month of August, but on Tuesday he turned in his best performance to date. The 2020 ninth overall pick hit for the cycle, crushed a grand slam and drove in seven RBIs in a win over Modesto while extending his hit streak to seven games. Veen this month is hitting .429 and has boosted his season line to .309/.403/.532 with 15 homers and 72 RBIs.

Curtis Mead, 3B, Tampa Bay Rays (High-A Bowling Green)
Tampa Bay sent pitcher Cristopher Sánchez to the Phillies for Mead in a prospect-for-prospect deal back in 2019, and I have to say without irony that I am beginning to love this trade for the Rays. The 20-year-old Australian absolutely demolished Low-A this season and has acquitted himself well at his new level, slashing .356/.408/.586 with seven homers and 21 doubles in 211 plate appearances for Charleston, and has hit .280/.349/.460 with five homers and 10 doubles in 172 plate appearances so far with Bowling Green. He gets his pop from a long, leveraged swing and wrists that forcefully power his bat through the zone. Excellent bat speed creates an explosion at contact, resulting in clothesline rockets that might land in any outfield locale. Mead is quick to the ball in spite of the length, which allows him to consistently barrel up pitches despite the uphill shape of his swing. The offensive performance has put him on a lot of radars, but the defensive profile is still quite up in the air. At a well-filled-out 6-foot-2, the Aussie looks the part at third base. His actions there aren’t great however, especially when he has to make a difficult throw. His lack of range and speed makes him an unideal candidate for most other positions as well, and it may be up to the Rays to find a place for this promising bat. —Ben Spanier

Rockies: Brenton Doyle, OF (No. 7) High-A Spokane
Doyle capped off a three hit day with a home run -- his fifth in the last eight games. His power has been on display recently, batting .300 for the month of August. The outfielder also smacked two singles in Sunday’s game, continuing his three-game multi-hit streak. The Rockies' fourth-round 2019 Draft pick has lived up to his potential of being a power hitter in High-A this season. Doyle was caught stealing, but has successfully taken three bases this month.
