Players signed or apparently signed to play overseas in 2018

Post by Padres »

Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that the Twins have sold Michael Tonkin to the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in Japan.

Tonkin has agreed to a two-year, $2.1 million contract with the Fighters and will serve as their closer, per Berardino's sources. The 27-year-old right-hander wasn't going to be guaranteed a spot in the Minnesota bullpen for 2018 after posting a rough 5.14 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over 21 innings this season, so he did pretty well for himself here.

Update: Jae-gyun Hwang has signed a four-year, $7.85 million contract with the KT Wiz of the Korea Baseball Organization.

Hwang wound up having to settle for a minor league contract with the Giants last winter and spent most of the season at the Triple-A level, hitting only .154/.228/.231 over 57 plate appearances during his brief time in the majors. The 30-year-old has gotten a nice contract to return to his native Korea and his time playing in the states figures to be over.

Jae-gyun Hwang plans to play in Korea next season, his agent told NBC Sports Bay Area.

Hwang signed with the San Francisco Giants after hitting .335/.394/.570 with the Lotte Giants of Korea in 2016, but he ended up getting just 52 at-bats in the majors and hitting .154/.228/.231 with one homer. He wasn't going to get more than a minor league contract if he remained in the U.S., so it makes plenty of sense for him to return home.

Keyvius Sampson has signed a one-year, $700,000 contract with the Hanwha Eagles of the Korea Baseball Organization.

Sampson, who turns 27 in January, posted a 5.60 ERA in the majors from 2015-16 before spending all of 2017 at the Triple-A level. Instead of taking a minor league deal in the states, he'll get a nice little pay bump overseas.

Jason Wheeler has signed a one-year, $575,000 contract with the Hanwha Eagles of the Korea Baseball Organization.

Wheeler made his major league debut with the Twins in 2017 and allowed five runs -- three earned -- in two relief appearances totaling three innings. The 27-year-old left-hander will try to re-establish himself in South Korea.

Logan Verrett has signed with the NC Dinos of the Korea Baseball Organization.

Verrett opted to go overseas after electing free agency last month. The 27-year-old made four appearances with the Orioles this past season and posted a 5.10 ERA over two starts and 38 relief appearances in Triple-A.

Jee-ho Yoo of South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reports that Michael Choice has re-signed with the Nexen Heroes of the Korea Baseball Organization.

The Brewers sold Choice's minor league contract to Nexen in July and he's re-signed with them for $600,000, according to Yoo. The 28-year-old former top prospect hasn't played in the majors since 2015.

Jee-ho Yoo of South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reports that Jacob Brigham has re-signed with the Nexen Heroes of the Korea Baseball Organization.

Brigham will make $650,000 on his one-year contract. The 29-year-old right-hander posted a 4.38 ERA over 24 starts for Nexen last season after the Tigers sold his minor league deal to the KBO club.

ByungHo Park has agreed to a one-year, $1.4 million contract to return to the Nexen Heroes of the Korean Baseball Organization.

In doing so, Park leaves $6.5 million on the table that he was still owed from the Twins. The 31-year-old hit a paltry .191/.275/.409 with 12 homers and 24 RBI in 244 plate appearances with the Twins in 2016. He spent the entire 2017 campaign at Triple-A Rochester where he hit .253/.308/.415 with 14 homers and 60 RBI in 111 games.

Emily Walden of The Athletic reports that Steven Moya will sign a one-year deal with the Chunichi Dragons of the Nippon Professional Baseball League.

Moya was recently outrighted from the 40-man roster. Once a former top prospect in the Detroit system, the 25-year-old has shown big-time power in his bat, but has struggled with anything that isn't straight. He'll look to resurrect his stock by performing well in the NPB like several other sluggers have done.

Cubs released RHP Matt Carasiti.

Carasiti's contract is being solid to the Yakult Swallows in Japan, according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick. The right-hander spent all of 2017 at the Triple-A level, posting a 3.26 ERA and 68/23 K/BB ratio over 49 2/3 relief innings.

Tim Adleman has signed a one-year contract with the Samsung Lions of the Korea Baseball Organization.

The deal is worth $1.08 million, including a $100,000 signing bonus, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer. Adleman led the Reds in innings pitched in 2017, but that wasn't much of an accomplishment and he finished the season with a rough 5.52 ERA. The 30-year-old right-hander could look to return to Major League Baseball in 2019 with a strong 2018 showing in the KBO.

The KIA Tigers of the Korea Baseball Organization announced Friday that they have re-signed Roger Bernadina to a one-year, $1.1 million contract.

There had been speculation that Bernadina was interested in a return to the big leagues, but he'll remain with the Tigers instead. The 33-year-old hit .320/.372/.540 with 27 homers and 111 RBI in 2017.

The KIA Tigers of the Korea Baseball Organization announced Friday that they have re-signed Hector Noesi to a one-year, $2 million contract.

The 30-year-old right-hander hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2015. Last year (his second in the KBO), he went 20-5 with a 3.48 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 149/45 K/BB ratio across 201 2/3 innings. He may have generated some interest stateside, but will remain where he's comfortable and having success.

Mariners released RHP Seth Frankoff.

The club issued a statement Sunday indicating that they were granting his release so Frankoff could pursue an opportunity with a team in South Korea. The 29-year-old hurler owned a 3.80 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 631/235 K/BB ratio across 637 innings in eight minor league seasons.

Edgar Olmos has reached a contract with the Chiba Lotte Marines of Nippon Professional Baseball.

Olmos posted a promising 2.68 ERA in 87 1/3 innings this past season with the Triple-A affiliate of the Red Sox, but he never got another crack at the MLB level and will now head over to Japan. The former third-round pick of the Marlins last appeared in a major league game in 2015. He turns 28 years old in April.

Mike Bolsinger has agreed to a contract with the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan.

Bolsinger was outrighted off the Blue Jays' 40-man roster in August after registering an ugly 6.31 ERA, 1.82 WHIP, and 39/27 K/BB ratio in five starts and six relief appearances covering 41 1/3 innings. The 29-year-old right-hander will try to revitalize his career in Nippon Professional Baseball.

Neil Wagner has signed a one-year, $750,000 contract with the Seibu Lions in Japan.

Wagner last appeared in a major league game back in 2014 with the Blue Jays, though he did post some pretty intriguing numbers this past season between the Triple-A affiliates of the Rays and Mets. The 33-year-old right-hander should do well in Nippon Professional Baseball and could look to return to MLB in 2019.

Felix Doubront has signed with the Lotte Giants in the Korea Baseball Organization.

The deal is for $1 million, including a $900,000 salary and a $100,000 bonus. After missing all of 2016 following Tommy John surgery, Doubront posted a 3.86 ERA and 50/19 K/BB ratio over 42 innings with the A's Triple-A affiliate this past season. The 30-year-old last pitched in the majors in 2015 with the Athletics and Blue Jays.

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that Oswaldo Arcia has signed with the Nippon Ham Fighters on a one-year, $1.7 million contract with a mutual option for 2019.

He can earn $300,000 more in incentives. Going overseas is probably a wise decision for Arcia, who has struggled to gain traction in the majors but mashed again at Triple-A in 2017. He's still young enough -- 27 in May -- to parlay a big season in Japan into a contract with a major league club next winter.

Angels released OF Jared Hoying.

That comes just a couple of weeks after they inked the outfielder to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. The Angels granted his release so that he could pursue an opportunity to play in South Korea.

Update: Jared Hoying signed a $700,000 deal with the Hanwha Eagles in the Korea Baseball Organization.

Hoying was granted his release by the Angels over the weekend. The contract includes a $400,000 signing bonus and a $300,000 salary for 2018. The 28-year-old is a .220/.262/.288 hitter over 74 games in the majors, all with the Rangers.

Garcia is set to sign with the Chunichi Dragons in Japan's Central League. The 28-year-old has made five appearances in the majors in his career and posted a 4.75 ERA over 12 starts and 10 relief appearances between Double- and Triple-A in 2017.

Indians released RHP Leonel Campos.

It's a courtesy move that will allow Campos to sign a more lucrative deal with the Hiroshima Carp in Japan. The 30-year-old right-hander inked a non-guaranteed minor league contract with Cleveland in late November. He owns a 4.74 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in 38 career relief appearances at the MLB level.

Hyun Soo Kim has signed a four-year, $10.58 million contract with the LG Twins of the Korea Baseball Organization.

Kim fared well as a part-timer in 2016 in his first year in the states, but he really struggled in a reduced role in 2017 and has decided to return to his native country. He will turn 30 next month.
