IBC Draft Queue

Post by Dodgers »

Wanted to get some thoughts before I deploy this. Basically, since the draft is going through OOPSS this year, I want a way to queue players so that you don't necessarily have to be there to make your pick, the system will pick them for you. However, due to the nature of the draft and OOPSS, I'm not sure exactly how I should approach it. My gut would be to create a database of all MLB draft picks plus as many eligible foreigners as I can find and you select from that. However, since this would basically be a list of players to draft from, I'm not sure that this is the best approach (because it would essentially remove almost all possibility of a surprise pick). If consensus is that that's okay, then I also need to figure out whether or not to allow sorting by round (since it would allow GMs to not do the work and still know who is the highest available player).

Thoughts?

Tough one.

If there was a way for GM's to create their own players without anyone else seeing, that could work.

If not, I guess we could look at an auto-generated email to tell GM's it's their pick after the GM in front of them picks.

Response in 2 parts
1.) The problem with that is having those players removed from another team's queue when they are picked (must be able to do this so that players aren't picked twice).

2.) The problem isn't the notification, it's that if a GM is away, they need to be able to be picked for. Previously we had sent in lists, which is basically the same as a queue. Since it's going through the system, removing the list variable/admin drafting seems the best approach as it will both save draft time and effort.

A couple of issues I see.

There have been times that I've flip flopped back and forth on players up until my pick.

Sometimes the player drafted rigth before me effects who I take.

There would have to be a way to turn off the autodraft for GM's not wanting to have their pick automatic.

If all picks were auto, the draft would be over in 10 minutes.

If there were a text field somewhere, maybe on some kind of team draft page, that could only be viewed by GM and admin - it would make list submission easier. If it's easy enough to access, before leaving the site after their last draft pick I bet we could get most GMs to just type in 5 names for the admin to view if they miss their next pick by a certain amount of time.

On the other hand, I wouldn't be totally against a list of all draft-eligible guys - though I don't think we need to have their actual draft position listed. Success in the draft would still depend on how much research each GM does. The only difference would be that there would be less of a likelihood that a prepared GM would slip up and miss someone he thought was taken or something. Is that so bad? One other benefit is that since there's always some confusion as to one foreign player or another's eligibility, this would give a definitive answer as to which foreign players who have already signed are eligible. Of course, unsigned players expected to come to the US (Japanese) would be included too, right? Just like college players, GMs would be risking that they don't sign.

I think shawn had it right with his initial idea. A database of all eligible players is the way to go. it's not as though there are going to be mystery players, it's pretty clear who is going to be eligible, it's a finite, if large, pool.

The eligible player list would be what, roughly 1250ish players with Int. free agents? If it were presented as Player Name, Position, DOB and sortable by those catagories without revealing anything extra like MLB drafted position I don't see how it gives anyone a shortcut in their Draft prep.

The only thing I'd like is a way to cull the chaff and personalize the list to 150 or so spots.

Agreed, there are some pretty comprehensive public lists of international free agents out there. I'd be willing to compile the list myself (since i do something similar every draft season anyhow). If you want someone who isn't on the full lst but who is draft eligible, make sure you're around for your pick.

I personally would be against a list of available players.......I feel it's the job of the GM to do their research and develop their own list.

Names, birth dates and positions hardly amounts to giving away research. there won't be draft order, scouting reports or even information on what MLB team signed the player. Just name, DOB and position.

I think it's probably just as much work to wade through a list of 1250 people as it is to make such a list from scratch. Also, we don't have lazy GMs, everyone does their share of prep so I really doubt that having a 1200+ person list with no rounds, team names or signing status is going to be a huge factor.

The list is 1600+ players. Some of them signed with teams, some of them didn't. if anyon finds this useful for anything other than draft queuing, I'll be amazed.

These are just from Latin America - no Far East signings
