He's said he'd take 1 yr at $13 mil, and I wouldn't have a problem with that, as long as it doesn't interfere with their ability to sign Lowell. If they don't sign him I'd have to think they must just be sick of his big mouth, because with the money they're making from the marketing bonanza that the Red Sox are they're rolling in cash. They don't have many holes to fill, so seems like they can afford the sentimental slight-overpaying of Schilling. Also, some combination of Wakefield/Schilling as their #4/5 would allow them to give Bucholz the first half of the season to get rolling at AAA, then bring him up in the second half when one of the old guys needs a DL stint.
I wouldn't go over $10m. $10m +$4m in incentives would probably have a decent chance of getting a deal done.
While the Sox may be rolling in the dough, that's a public image they're very conscious of and I can see them working to reduce payroll this season because they want to keep a lot of distance between them and the Yankees in the payroll department.
That said, they've got a lot of dough coming off the books this season. Schilling (13m), Clement (ugh, 9.5m), Lowell (9m), Gagne (double ugh 6m), Hinske (5.7m) combined for $40m+ this past season. Give me a choice of sentimental over-paying, Schilling or Lowell, and I'll take Lowell in a heartbeat.

This is what I love about Red Sox fans - Schilling pitches his ass off for 2 World Series', and you want give him $13 mill? You'd rather just give him $10 mill? What the hell's the difference when your payroll is $150 million dollars?
That statement is just insane...Curt started 24 games, threw 150 ip's - with tremendous success - a 3.87 era, 1.25 whip, and almost 5:1 k/bb ratio. On a planet where Joel Pineiro gets almost 7 mill a year, Curt's worth 13 mill...

Is Schilling a type A free agent?
If so, a team is giving him $13M + a 1st round pick to sign him for a year....I think that alone keeps him in Boston.

That is correct, unless he signs elsewhere before the arbitration deadline...RedSox wrote:He is a type A but the Sox would have to offer him arbitration in order to get compensation from him and I don't think they' want to risk that unless they really want to keep him.
December 1st this year? Anybody know?

I doubt any team would be foolish enough to do that.Rockies wrote:That is correct, unless he signs elsewhere before the arbitration deadline...RedSox wrote:He is a type A but the Sox would have to offer him arbitration in order to get compensation from him and I don't think they' want to risk that unless they really want to keep him.

You never know though.
Honestly Bren and all other Red Sox fans out there, we gotta embrace having the money to do whatever we want, not bitch about comparisons to the Yankees or whatever, we have what we've always wanted, a dominant team to root for and management that will do whatever it takes to keep it that way. I'm in complete agreement with Z, 13 or 10 what the hell is the difference, and isn't it great to be in a situation where that's the case?
Schilling was also out for almost 1/4 of the year, he's 40 yrs old. The likelihood of him missing a large chunk of time is high.
Just because you have the money doesn't mean you should throw it around. You set a value to a guy ad you don't exceed it.
And anyone who thinks Pineiro is actually worth $7m/yr is a damn fool.

No one beats a dead horse like Shawn.

Absolutely. Kudos to Curt for expressing his honest preference, then following through as if he really meant it. That's a little too rare in sports these days. He also knows that the $2 to $4 mil he gave up might buy him even more legendary status in New England, and that kind of stuff seems more important to him than to some other players (probably b/c of his gigantic ego). No doubt he'll enjoy every second of his yearlong retirement tour.RedSox wrote:Schilling signing for $8m + $2m in incentives. Got to give him this... he put his money where his (ever running) mouth is. He really does want to stay in Boston.
