Best signings/worst releases

Signings

Justin Hampson in June 2007. Saw him come into the game after the Derek Lee/Chris Young brawl and wound up signing him. He went in my rotation in 2008 and won 12 games to help me win the pennant.

Chris Gomez in March 2008. Wound up hitting .317 in over 200 at bats for me to help me win the NL. Drew a walk to drive in a run the at bat before Furcal's grand slam to win the Wild Card playoff game.

Mitchell Boggs, Jonny Venters, Pat Neshek, Tyler Clippard, Fernando Salas, Sam Freeman. I'm pretty good and picking up relievers off the scrap heap that have some good years right afterwards

Releases

It predates OOPSS, but I cut Adam Jones after I drafted him because Seattle moved him off of SS to CF and I had traded for Tony Giaratanno as my SS of the future. That was the only time that I ever cut a draftee before 2 years before like, 2011 I think.

Alex Cobb in August 2009. I drafted him and had cut and resigned him a couple of times when he was under the radar. Thought I could get away with it again to sign Freddy Guzman to be a pinch runner once rosters expanded in my drive towards a Wild Card. Didn't work and I lost out on a great SP through stupidity.

Vince Velasquez was cut during his TJ recovery when I went into rebuilding mode and had 4 first rounders and needed the roster space. I've reacquired him

Chris Davis (8/1/07 and forget the trade)

Brad Ziegler (5/30/08)
Mike Hessman (6/17/08 and I was the first guy to use him as a rent-a-bat)
Burke Badenhop (8/20/09)

Santiago Casilla (6/1/10)
Alex Cobb (6/2/10)

Bad Releases

Colby Lewis (5/26/07, before he went to Japan)
Khris Davis (2/9/11)
Dallas Keuchel (4/25/11)
Andrew Miller (1/13/12)
Tyson Ross (6/29/12 - Always believed in him, didn't think anyone else would)
Raul Alcantara (1/22/13)
Edwin Escobar (5/24/13 - Shawn are you sure this is right? I have no recollection of having Escobar before I traded for him, if so, yeesh terrible move on my part right before the breakout)
Will Smith (8/9/13)

Many more bad trades than bad releases, save that for a different list...

The nice thing about having a shitty team for essentially my entire span being in IBC before this season, is that I haven't really had any releases I regret. For signings? Well I've gotten a lot of miles out of Josh Outman. I remember signing him because he came in to face the Cardinals and I was like "With a name like that, he's gotta be a decent reliever." I'm happy with picking up Zach Duke because of what he's doing in MLB, and Donovan Solano because of what he's doing in IBC filling in for Phillips. I'm also hopeful Adam Duvall and Rangel Ravelo will end up being productive players.

Well my releases definitely outweigh the signings. At least I had fewer bad releases over time but what was I thinking in 2006?

Worst releases:
2006 - Alcides Escobar, Carlos Santana, Ian Desmond
2007 - Franklin Gutierrez
2008 - Nyjer Morgan
2009 - AJ Ellis (multiple times)
2011 - Melky Cabrera
2012 - John Lackey
2014 - Pat Neshek

Best signings:
2007 - Austin Jackson
2008, 2009 - AJ Ellis (at least releasing him hadn't cost me anything)
2011 - Greg Holland, Shawn Kelley, Pedro Strop

The big name here is obviously Joey Bats. That one hurts. The next big thing is signing Kluber (beat you Hamlin) and releasing him 30 min later. I originally created Dozier, released him, signed him, released him.
